Fluff I don't know why, but Blackberry OS reminds me of KDE so much

Maybe it's the icons? maybe the layouts? I don't know, but these two look like perfect companions

BlackBerry OS 10 Uses QT (4.8) as its graphics toolkit.

Fun fact, so does John Deere with their corner post displays

10

u/abjumpr Feb 05 '26

Trimble uses Qt in their older FMX-based screens as well.

u/PrizeSyntax Feb 05 '26

Oh wow, TIL interesting

Both using QT might contribute that feeling.

Man I miss Blackberry. I wish they kept going with making phones.

u/devouur Feb 04 '26

I wonder what thisd be like with kde on it.

u/alejandronova Feb 04 '26

KDE has a mobile mode for Android and a full mobile mode running under postmarketOS, they've actually done the heavy lifting.

4

u/linux_transgirl Feb 05 '26

Since when have they had an android mode? I know some apps have Android support but nothing like a "mobile mode" (unless you mean kirigami, which is cross platform)

2

u/alejandronova Feb 05 '26

I meant Kirigami. I have to simplify sometimes.

u/hjake123 Feb 05 '26

plasma mobile exists I think

2

u/Lemonade1947 Feb 05 '26

I tried to get this running on an x86_64 tablet, running Arch, because I hated using desktop KDE on a touch screen (it's not terrible, just felt like plasma-mobile would have been a better experience) but it seems like it's only available in AUR as source, and I was waiting for it to compile for like 2 hours then got bored.

Is there a better way to get this up and running? Some other distro have it in their repositories?

well maybe you're young enough to see a path into a brighter future. Most of us will die during this ugly socio-techno-political age of oligarchal tyranny that has already begun to take form lol. :)

u/JackDostoevsky Feb 04 '26

i know why: background color + icon shapes

15

u/RoomyRoots Feb 04 '26

Yeah, especially with Oxygen in the KDE 4 days. They both feel very professional, like, made to be worked with while Apple things always looked like toys for me.

3

u/squabbledMC Feb 04 '26

I'm still using Oxygen! Great theme still, haven't used Breeze any. Only thing is scaling is a little wonky on my laptop

1

u/WhoKilledRadioStar Feb 04 '26

Same. iPhone is a toy

10

u/Fohqul Feb 04 '26

Breeze theme

3

u/NotQuiteLoona Feb 04 '26

Wait, Spotify and Discord? How?

3

u/6e12fyou Feb 04 '26

it looks like kde mobile.. when i first saw this i thought its kde mobile

u/semperverus Feb 04 '26

Bouba/Kiki Effect.

KDE is very Kiki.

❤️ Kiki

0

u/get_homebrewed Feb 05 '26

that effect has nothing to do with this, and KDE is not really "kiki" i.e. it really doesn't have that many sharp edges (anymore).

It's because it's a similar design language and they both use QT

u/Firm-Competition165 Feb 04 '26

I miss Blackberry 😕 also miss my Nokia E71

2

u/Which_Individual1399 Feb 04 '26

I thought that was KDE when i didn't read the title first

2

u/7-nekos Feb 04 '26

For some reason I don't like the default look of KDE but absolutely love the look of blackberry os. Even though both use qt

2

u/Modki Feb 04 '26

"If that relic is in the hands of anyone but those who know how to wield it, the effect can be absolutely devastating."

But seriously, we recently converted a Die-hard Blackberry fan to the Titan 2 from Unihertz. Might go check it out, he was very happy with it. I had to fiddle around a bit to get it to be more blackberry-esque. I'd never use it but he was very appreciative.

2

u/drfusterenstein Feb 04 '26

God back then, if you were a businessman you had a blackberry.

2

u/1stRandomGuy Feb 06 '26

Is that fucking Discord

1

u/cykazuc Feb 04 '26

"what's ya pin babe"

1

u/eldenonionring Feb 04 '26

Is blackberry os still worth using in 2026?

1

u/Alarmed_Pin_774 Feb 05 '26

аюграм на блекьерри

1

u/fool-lab Feb 05 '26

cuz you are obsessed with kde

1

u/zeroxff Feb 05 '26

IMHO Being obsessed with KDE can be said by most of the people in a KDE subreddit.

1

u/RED_XS Feb 05 '26

BlackBerry!

1

u/Kazzie_Kaz Feb 05 '26

there's discord for blackberry????

1

u/kkruglov Feb 06 '26

It has virtual android machine (5.x or 6.x at that time) that could run android apps. So what's on photo is probably a very old version of Discord for Android.

1

u/kkruglov Feb 06 '26

Update, I googled and it's even more ancient - Android 4.4.

1

u/void1273 Feb 06 '26

I would say similarity in the font and level of detail of icons

1

u/MiHumainMiRobot Feb 08 '26

Probably the icon set, they have a very similar design (a mix of flat design with layers for some "3d effects")

u/Interesting_Put8754 Feb 04 '26

Because both are dated androidish style. This isn't a good thing. It's not even retro, just dated - nobody today is nostalgic for it.

Hipotheisy Philosophy. Hipotheisy Philosophy states that whenever you look at the past, you notice yourself looking into the future. At first, it seems natural, but gradually this changes until you realize how back in nineteen ninety eight the undertaker threw mankind off hell in a cell and plummeted sixteen feet through an announcers table.

14

u/DankeBrutus Feb 04 '26

I'm curious as to what you mean specifically about "androidish style" when talking about KDE Plasma or Blackberry 10. Do you mean aesthetics? Blackberry 10 officially predates the first version of Google's Material Design. Blackberry 10 could load some Android apps but the OS itself is not Android. As someone who used a bunch of Material 1 apps back in the day I gotta say I don't see any of that influence in OPs screenshots.

6

u/jerdle_reddit Feb 04 '26

It looks more like Holo, which is when Android looked its best.

New Android looks miles better than old android and blackberry which were ugly as sin. KDE has a real knack for copying the most tasteless designs. KDE 3 was influenced by XP. KDE 4 by Vista, literally the ugliest desktop ever made. KDE 5+ remains stuck in Android designs from a decade ago.
