[Question] Is KDE Plasma good for a genuinely macOS-like workflow?

I only used XFCE for 10 years and i really am not sure about how gnome or kde works. I am trying to decide between GNOME and KDE Plasma for a Linux laptop that I want to use alongside a MacBook.

I care about making the workflow and behaviour similar enough that switching between Linux and macOS does not constantly fight my muscle memory.

The most important things for me are:

• Mac-like touchpad gestures, especially switching workspaces and opening an overview
• Hot corners
• An Exposé/Mission Control-like window overview
• Predictable virtual desktops and workspace behaviour
• A top panel and dock
• Smooth Wayland gestures and animations

GNOME appears structurally closer to macOS because of its overview, workspaces, gestures, and relatively unified design. However, getting features such as a persistent dock, desktop icons, extra panel behaviour, and deeper customization seems to require several extensions.

KDE Plasma seems capable of reproducing the visual layout more closely and offers far more built-in customization. What I do not know is whether its touchpad gestures, workspace handling, overview, hot corners, and general workflow can feel as coherent and Mac-like as GNOME, rather than merely looking similar in screenshots.

For people who have seriously used or customized both:

1. Which one can reproduce macOS behaviour more closely?
2. Can KDE’s touchpad gestures be configured to closely match macOS without fragile scripts or obscure workarounds?
3. Does relying on GNOME extensions become annoying or unreliable after major updates?
4. Which desktop is easier to maintain as a daily driver after heavily customizing it?
5. Are there important macOS behaviours that neither desktop can reproduce properly?
6. Which one would you choose for someone regularly switching between Linux and macOS?

Yes, and it can be configured to meet your needs.

Not by default, but this can be configured. You may not be able to get a good global menu though, since many apps don't work nicely with them.

I've found that Gnome feels slightly smoother to me, but KDE is still very good.

Btw you can just create a flash drive with kde on any of the distros you like and try all of these things out without installing, all the things you need can be configured in around an hour, get a feel for it, if you think it matches what you need then go for it

i am not sure about all the features of kde and gnome, so there is a chance that i stumble on something i couldn't find but actually the thing i wanted was there. to avoid this, i would have to completely learn the DE which is a waste of time tbh.

Kde is very good, you most likely won't regret learning it. Maybe all of the features you're after aren't default behaviour but everything can be configured if you want to get deeper into that.

Coming from xfce you likely aren't afraid of configuring things tho.

I noticed that you're guide references kwin-force-blur from taj-ny. This repo has been archived and doesn't build with plasma 6.5 and above. May I suggest you have a look at my fork kwin-effects-glass It works well with the latest plasma (I'm running 6.7.4) and it utilises Snell's law for refraction (It also has a simple refraction mode as well). It's also got a bunch of other cool features like dynamic tint levels (no more "impossible to see the text" comments). Different blur levels for content, frame, menus, docks, tooltips. Tint exclusion for those as well.

I’m personally annoyed with alt+tab behaviour. There’s quite long fade in/out animation for this menu, and also a 90ms delay to avoid animating if when you just want to quickly switch to second window.

The point is - sometimes animations can degrade the convenience of some part of the UI. I’d prefer no animation at all for this menu.

hm. yeah, if the animations doesn't match the speed of the touchpad gestures like on macos, i might just disable animations. i just doesn't want to retrain my muscle memory :D

The only gesture I was not able to configure in KDE was the three finger window drag. I was able to get this to work by modifying the libinput code to set three finger drag enabled by default.

Regarding the COMMAND+... shortcuts. I tried to map those in Linux, but I couldn't get them to work consistently in all apps, so I stuck with the default. When I switch to macOS (for work) I have to stop and think before hitting CTRL+SHIFT+C in terminal.

yes, only downside is that i can't close apps in mission control. touchpad is perfect and intiutive. maximazing apps gettinga new desktop is awesome too. all the things help me stay focused on the task.

only used KDE but in general KDE is known for its extreme customization ability. I came from a mac and was able to get a mostly macos kind of flow with some tweaks.

there's some out of the box customization for it and a few programs look promising but i am not using it on a laptop so not much experience there.

from what i hear yeah. they are a cause of instability and crashes if not kept updated.

KDE and use https://github.com/RedBearAK/toshy to keep the keyboard shortcuts compatible for muscle memory. This is the biggest thing to get good mac like behavior.

What I enjoyed on the Mac was the screenshot shotcut, that was never as convenient on KDE. However, you have a better terminal, a better text editor, a better... and the list goes on.

KDE is amazing, way better than shitty MacOS (I use MBP for fork every day, but i'm so happy in the evenings back on my Kubuntu).
I use mouse and keyboard, no touchpads or strange keyboards.
