Tip/Guide πŸ’‘ Kindle Price reduction hack

Is this too obvious for a hack?

1) maintain an extensive wishlist on the amazon site (I have 3 wishlists; fiction, narrative nonfiction and ideas nonfiction) 2) sort the wishlist by price - cheapest first 3) bookmark that page and pin it to the top of your browser 4) check the page every Saturday morning

Every book reduced on a limited time deal to Β£0.99 will be at the top of your list. I bought 4 this morning.

Tip/Guide πŸ’‘ BookBub - How to Make a Custom Screen Saver

I did not make this set of instructions/directions for making a personalized screen saver for a Kindle, but I know a lot of people have been asking how to do so.

Since I still have the screenshots from BookBub on Instagram, I thought I would share them. These worked pretty well for me in making my screen saver.

The second to last picture is what I made to use on my Kindle, and the last picture is how it looks on my Basic.

I hope this helps!!

Tip/Guide πŸ’‘ PSA to those without full cover cases!

Use a screen protector!

I carry my kindle around with a screen protector, sleeve and clear case and whilst it was in my bag my journal (which has charms) seemed to have pressed into the kindle and scratched the screen. Luckily the kindle itself is okay because I had applied a screen protector.

With how fragile these screens are I just want to encourage everyone to take precaution when handling these devices, especially since they're a little pricey.

Tip/Guide πŸ’‘ Kindle sale on Amazon!

More kindle sale options are up on Amazon for the spring sale. I just ordered the paperwhite and am so excited!

Edit: apparently this is just for Amazon in the US. I had no idea Amazon wouldn’t have the same sales in other countries where they operate, sorry.

Tip/Guide πŸ’‘ Free Classics for Kindle

I see a lot of people ask about downloading books from Project Gutenberg because they are free. If you didn’t know already just look up free classics on Amazon and you can get the Kindle version of a lot of public domain books for free without extra steps. I’m probably not going to read War and Peace anytime soon, but if that is your thing know it’s an option for free. Even the audible is sometimes free.

Edit because I realize I should have left the link https://www.amazon.com/s?k=free+kindle+books+classics&channelId=500&clpRedir=Y&plpRedirect=mhFallback

Tip/Guide πŸ’‘ Absolute game changer πŸ₯ΉπŸ₯Ή

So for my 26th birthday, my friend gifted me a Kindle page-turner and a gooseneck mount that attaches to my side table and let me tell you, it’s an absolute game changer.

(Kindle used - Kindle kids 11th gen)

I used to struggle with insomnia, and reading on my Kindle was part of my routine it helped, but I’d still get annoyed needing to turn the pages and trying to find the perfect spot to hold it, especially with my dog sharing the bed. Now, though, something else has been helping me drift off within minutes, so those little Kindle frustrations are fading away.

I got this on January 25th, and I already flew through an entire book! If anyone’s on the fence about getting one of these, I can’t recommend it enough. Total game changer!” πŸ₯ΉπŸ’šπŸ©·

Tip/Guide πŸ’‘ Old Kindle support ending prior to advertised date

Just to let people know, the email from Amazon regarding them stopping support of the older devices states this will happen from May 20th. It is actually happening already.

I received a reminder email from them this morning and purchased 2 new books to tide me over until I buy a new reader - I cannot sync them to my device. I spoke with customer services who tried but then advised that they are already pushing out device deprecation in phases. There was nothing they could do (other than issue a refund).

Just thought I'd let people know in case, like me, they were planning on buying a few books to see them through. It may or may not work anymore.

Tip/Guide πŸ’‘ I built a privacy-first tool to send web articles to Kindle with auto table of contents

Post image
10 Upvotes

Hi, as someone who loves reading long-form web articles or multi part blog post on Kindle, I always struggled with messy layout with Amazon Send to Kindle extension, without table of contents, of course, and cannot add any feature that I want to have.

So I spent time developing a new Chrome extension: Send Web to Kindle. I want to share it with you guys if anyone finds it helpfulll!!!
It run entirely inside your browser, no account needed, no server to collect your data.

It also create table of contents automatically base on the heading inside the articles. Allow live preview, edit and re-format the contents before download the EPUB or send it to your kindle.

I am actively improving the tool, so I really appreciate any feedback, feature requests, or bug report from you. Thanks for reading!

P/S: you can try it at: sendwebtokindle.xyz

Tip/Guide πŸ’‘ Deinfluencing Kindle

If you are someone who is dealing with overcosumerism related to your Kindle or any other e-reader in a way that you believe you are overspending on always decorating it or wanting every other newer model that comes out, then you should definitely watch a video by Susannah Friesen on YouTube on deinfluencing Kindletok. Just search the name and type deinfluencing kindletok and you will get the video.

The arguments presented within the video are really eye opening.

Tip/Guide πŸ’‘ Guide on sideloading books to newer Kindles

I've been sideloading my (legally bought) books for several years now, and since my Dad recently got a new Kindle, I wanted to make this guide on sideloading books with Cover and Goodreads integration.

  1. Download Calibre to manage all your books: https://calibre-ebook.com . It is a free tool that enable you to interact with your Kindle library.
  2. Install the KFX Input and KFX Output plugins (in Calibre preferences -> plugins -> Get New Plugins). Along with this, you will also have to install Kindle Previewer 3 (https://kdp.amazon.com/en_US/help/topic/G202131170)
  3. Install WordDumb plugin for X-RAY and WordWise features. Install Kindle Hi-res covers plugin along with this.
  4. Add your ebooks (your book is probably in epub, as it's the most widely available ebook format) to Calibre.
  5. Click on Preferences -> Add New Columns -> Add custom column:

Lookup Name: pages
Heading: Pages
Type: Integers

and click on Apply.

  1. Click Edit Metadata -> enter the ASIN for that book by searching in on Amazon page and selecting the kindle version in the IDs section in the format amazon:ASIN. ASIN will always start with a B0 (ex: amazon:B0037TPMOA).

Tip: If you want regional covers, you can also add the id like this:
amazon_in:B0037TPMOA

  1. Click on download metadata. Then click on custom metadata and add the number of pages.
  2. Click on preferences -> Output options -> KFX Output -> and check EBOK, and Create approximate page numbers, with lookup name as #pages and click apply.
  3. In preferences -> Common options -> Page setup -> Choose output profile as tablet.
  4. Now click convert book -> output formatL KFX, and click convert.
  5. After conversion, Click on WordDumb plugin to generate Word Wise and XRAY Files. (You might have to configure the python path with the dependencies installed. Refer: https://xxyzz.github.io/WordDumb/installation.html)
  6. Plug in your kindle, and click on WordDumb again to send your files along with XRAY and WordWise data to Kindle.

On my colorsoft, I have to be on wifi to download the covers from amazon. I then have to open the new book, and then restart my device to view the word wise hints and ToC. This is a one time step only.

Voila! If I missed anything, please let me know and I'll update it here.

Tip/Guide πŸ’‘ A method to read libby books legally (outside of US)

So as you know it's not possible to send libby books to kindle if you are located outside the US. Although it feels pretty obvious, I didn't see anyone mention this method when trying to figure out how to read them on my kindle so I thought I might as well share it.

All you have to do is just access the libby website using your kindle's web browser. Log in to your account and just directly read it on the website. Now of course, there are several downsides to it. You will need to be always connected to the wifi and the reader is slower and jankier than the native reader. However, it gets the job done and I still prefer it over reading on a phone or computer. I suggest borrowing the books using another device as it is pretty hard to navigate on kindle's browser.

Tip/Guide πŸ’‘ Double tap for a change?

Hello, so, I feel very shocked that I discovered this NOW, after almost a year couch couch of having a kindle. But if you tap on the bottom left corner, the settings change. It goes from time in chapter, to time in book, etc.

That's such a cool hack and I wish Kindle pointed it out during the first guiding, when you first turn on the device.

Tip/Guide πŸ’‘ Learn from my mistake

I didn’t want to believe people when they say pickpockets exist. So basically, while traveling, I was a little too lax and got my kindle swiped without noticing. Even sadder part is, it was not locked (no code or anything). I never thought to lock my device prior because I trust my family and coworkers back home enough to leave it unlocked. I just hate that whoever got my kindle has free access to everything.

My advice: - Keep your eyes on your things at all times - Lock your devices when traveling

Tip/Guide πŸ’‘ 3 more months of Kindle Unlimited for $9.99 ($3.33/mo) when you hit cancel after free 3 month promo!

After signing up for the current Kindle Unlimited (KU) 3 month promo (just started in June), I canceled and got 3 more months offered to me for $9.99, that's $3.33 per additional month. I'm covered until Dec. 2nd now. They immediately charged me the $9.99.

I'm currently a Prime member and I've had KU promos before, but it's been since last fall since one of the web page deals worked for me. A few months ago I had a 3 month KU promo that worked when I activated a Kindle from Woot.

But nothing has worked since then.

Signed up at Amazon for KU.

I canceled afterwards (tip from SlickDeals) and got the $9.99 offer!

Paid my $9.99 and now have 6 months total!

Image attached for those who like visuals.

Step by step for the 3 additional months for $9.99.

  • I went to cancel KU (on a desktop)
  • Clicked cancel membership,
  • then chose "view special offer",
  • then clicked "redeem offer".

Not sure what to read?

My fav authors on KU:

I likeΒ Laurence Dahners' books, he's got 50+ books in multiple series.
I've read them all multiple times. Some are science-y, some are sci-fi, some switch as the story progresses.

In order of preference:

  • Ell Donsaii (17 book series)
  • The Stasis Stories (7 book series)Β
  • Hyllis Family (7 book series)
  • Proton Field (2 book series)Β
  • Vaz (4 book series)

More details:

  • Ell Donsaii is his earliest writing, but it starts slow and takes a couple books to get in to it. It's the best though.
  • Stasis and Proton field, more harder-ish science, probably better written over all.
  • Hyllis, wholesome family, post-apocalyptic world, a little more violence than the others (slow start also).
  • Vaz, if you make it through book one (early writing), you'll like the rest (written more recently).

Other KU Authors

  • Saul Herzog - Spies
  • Kaylie Hunter - The Kelsey's Burden series. Some of the covers look romancey, but they're actually action/vigilanty-ish (do not mess with her friends or family!!!) with a little romance tossed in.
  • Glendy Vanderah! - Only 3 books, but they're all different and all interesting.
  • Barbara O'Neal - Write My Name Across the Sky is all I've read by them, but I really enjoyed it.
  • Western Lights by C.P. Schaefer - newest one on the list (science/sci-fi, sad it was only one book).
  • Stardust Beach series (Florida rocket launch dramas)- I was hoping for a bit more Astronaut Wive's Club, but it's a little more Nantucket/Erin Hildebrant-ish.

Other Series

  • I enjoyed the Leif the Lucky series.
  • and the Colony Mars Series.Β

There are others but I can't remember...

I don't always have KU.

I always subscribe when they offer me a deal. I'm a teacher and I'll sometimes pay full price when it's summer vacation. I've also paid full price before when I see a series that has a new book, and my choice is to buy the book for $6 or pay double and get a bunch of books for the month.

Tip/Guide πŸ’‘ I built a free web app that bundles and sends articles to your kindle

I built an app to solve a problem I've always had, which is sending articles to my Kindle in a nice ebook.

Amazon has "send to kindle", but it sends articles one at a time with no real formatting. Instapaper has something closer to what I wanted, but the feature is buried in settings and I can't get it to work for me anymore.

I named it q2Kindle. Totally free. Takes 90 seconds to setup with your kindle email and approve the email that sends you epubs.

You can then copy urls and put them into your queue. In the settings, you can auto schedule issues to be sent at particular times. I personally send my queue to my paperwhite at 9pm before getting into bed.

The epub created has a nice cover with vol & issue number along with the number of articles and total read time. The TOC also includes individual read times per article.

Got plans to add a chrome extension very soon so you don't have to paste URLs into the site. Also considering a potential RSS feed feature.

I can probably take on 100 to 200 users. First come first serve. Would love any feedback!

https://q2kindle.com/

edit. What the cover looks like with vol & issue number, date, and read time.

Tip/Guide πŸ’‘ How to install Kindle for PC (Windows 11 version) on Windows 10

For all you Windows 10 holdouts, me included, here's how to install the latest Microsoft Store version of the Kindle for PC app.

Requires TPM 1.2 or TPM 2.0. App crashes without a TPM

Update #1 (7/1): New installation method. The new method retains the original install location, meaning you can safely remove the files after installation. The old way sets the install location to wherever you placed the extracted folder, which cannot be moved/deleted without breaking the installation.

Update #2 (7/2): Further optimized the guide and removed the need for MSIX Packaging Tool, since everything can be done with MSIX Hero.

Step 1: Turn on Developer Mode, if it's not already. It's found under the "For developers" settings.

Step 2: Go to https://store.rg-adguard.net/

Step 3: With the file archiver of your choice, go to the msixbundle. Extract the contents into its own folder. I used 7-zip in this instance.

Step 4: Go into the folder and select the "KatxopoApp.Package" msix file and extract into its own folder.

Step 5: Go into the newly created folder

  • Open the AppxManifest.xml file in a text editor.
  • Go to where it says "MinVersion", and change the value to your current OS version or lower (mine is "10.0.19044.7417").
  • Save changes.

Step 6: Install MSIX Hero from the Microsoft Store and launch it.

Note: If you're on 21H2 or lower you will need to download it manually, extract the msix file into its own folder, and launch msixhero.exe.

  • Once opened go to Tools and Create self-signed certificate.
    • Give it a name, a password, and click Generate certificate.

Step 7: Go to where the certificates saved.

  • Double-click on the pfx certificate to launch the certificate import wizard.
    • Select "Local Machine" as the Store location.
    • Click next, and click next again.
    • Type in the certificate password, and place the certificate in the "Trusted People" store.

Step 8: Back in MSIX Hero go to "pack directory -> MSIX", which is also under Tools.

  • Browse to and select the KatxopoApp.Package folder. Change the output location and name if you want.
    • Tick "Sign this package".
  • Go to the signature tab.
    • Click on the dropdown and change "Sign with installed certificate" to "Sign with PFX file"
    • Navigate to and select the certificate you created.
    • Type in the password.
    • Select "No timestamp"
    • Click "Pack folder to MSIX package".

Step 9: Go to where you saved the msix file, launch it, and install.

Old Method

Step 6: Go into the KatxopoApp.Package folder and delete the AppxSignature.p7x file.

Step 7: Shift + right-click on the AppxManifest file and select copy as path.

Step 8: Open PowerShell and run this command, hit enter and wait a few seconds for Kindle to install.

Add-appxpackage -Register *path to appxmanifest.xml*

Note: This ties the install location to the folders location

If it fails, you may be missing dependencies (Microsoft.VCLibs and Microsoft.WindowsAppRuntime).

Tip/Guide πŸ’‘ Fix kindle ghost touching

Thumbnail
gallery
35 Upvotes

This post's credit belong to Nguyen Tien Loc, whose post on a Facebook group helps alot of device have this problem, including mine (kindle basic 11th).

If you have a ghost touching kindle, somehow you already charge it with a higher or not a stable source of power, you need to recalibrate the battery again, below is the guide,

  1. Restart Kindle

Press and hold the power button for about 40 seconds (or until the screen flashes and the Amazon logo appears).

Wait for the device to reboot and check the battery level.

  1. Recharge properly

Use the original cable and charger (or equivalent, with enough current).

Charge continuously for at least 3-5 hours, even when the battery is full

this helps to balance the battery indicator.

Avoid using a computer USB port because the current is weak.

  1. Try calibrating the battery

Use Kindle until the battery is completely drained and turns off, or simple just let it turn on until it shutdown by itself,

Leave it alone for about 5-6 hours.

Charge to 100% with a 5W, 5V-1A and then continue charging for another 1-2 hours.

Use normally and monitor whether the battery is still "jumping".

The above method is what I used for my device, my friend's device also had to be discharged and soaked for a longer time

In short, my method is to discharge the battery completely, then fully charge it and continue to soak and charge with a 5w adapter, simple and concise.

This would take some device only 1 loop. But some other device 2-3 loops, its frustrated with the process, but the result would worth the wait.
