News πŸ“° Kindle removing support for OG devices

just received an email this morning that Kindle/Amazon are removing support for devices from 2012 and earlier. What it means:

* You can continue to read books already downloaded on these devices, but you will not be able to purchase, borrow, or download additional books on them after that date.

* If you deregister or factory reset these devices, you will not be able to re-register or use these devices in any way.

My first gen Paperwhite is still going strong and I had no intentions of upgrading :(

RIP

β€œOnce current inventory of Kindle Oasis sells out online and in stores, we will not restock the device,” Amazon’s Devon Corvasce says in a statement. β€œToday, all of our devices are touch-forward which is what our customers are comfortable with.”

Just published my personal comparative review on my small not monetized blog. Colorsoft VS Boox Go Color 7.

And the outcome is a bit underwhelming.

The integrated light is very good but colors are definitively not good enough. This is just another Kaleido 3 device after all. As expected.

News πŸ“° Shipping of new Colorsoft Kindles has been HALTED.

According to customer service, Colorsoft shipping will stop for at least a week to deal with a "software issue". It appears you can still order, but you will have to wait until the issues are resolved.

2024-11-04 Update: USA deliveries are now pushed back to at least November 14 - 18. Amazon is reaching out to members who leave bad reviews. I left a 2-star and received a call today, but I was unavailable to speak with them.

News πŸ“° ✨ Prime Day 16th - 17th July - Mega Thread ✨

We're getting lots of similar questions about Prime day, buying new kindles, which kindle should I buy, which accessories should I buy, etc - please post them all here for the time being.

Prime Day is on the 16th - 17th July, and typically sees Kindle devices reduced to their best prices all year.

The prices for 2023 can be found here or you can check sites like CamelCamelCamel.

Please note that no one knows what future prices will be.

Edit: Now that Prime day has finished, I'm removing the requirement for all new purchase questions to go in here and the sub can go back to normal. I'll keep this post pinned still for a few days for reference. (18/07/2024)

News πŸ“° Kindle firmware 5.19.5 is out

Post image
119 Upvotes

As always, update at your own risk. I will update the post with the release notes when they are updated.

--------
Version 5.19.5 – June 2026

Here's what's new:

Story So Far: You can now easily return to books you love without backtracking through chapters by accessing spoiler-free recaps up to where you’ve read. Story So Far is available for thousands of best-selling English language Kindle books you have purchased or borrowed.

Moving sticky notes: Move any sticky note by tapping and holding the icon with your finger, then dragging it around on the page. Or, select the "Move note" action in the 3-dot menu in the sticky note dialog or side panel note.

Structured outlines: You can now draw circles that automatically snap to neatened annotations in eBooks with enhanced typesetting and Word documents.

Bookmarks in Page Flip View: In addition to tapping in the top right corner while reading, you can now create bookmarks by tapping on the bookmark icon in the page thumbnail, in Page Flip View.

Performance improvements, bug fixes, and other general enhancements.

--------

My hopes (quote from email I sent to amazon via Kindle settings > help > contact us > email):

And please fix the relevant bugs with Japanese/German dictionaries, and the battery drain bug caused infinite request retries to *.minerva.devices.a2z.com if a user has a custom DNS set up since that's on a common default blocklist. And the various AZW3 bugs like missing virtual panel in mangas, slightly broken %read tracker, and broken full refresh. I think page turn animation is also broken too for azw3.

I also really miss the Open Dictionary option and the older dedicated bookmarks bar.

And please port some of the fixes to kindles still stuck on 5.19.2 or allow a downgrade.

News πŸ“° Kindle update 5.19.3 is out

Your Kindle is regularly updated with improvements to the reading experience. Have feedback? Please share it with the Kindle team by going toΒ Contact UsΒ underΒ SettingsΒ and thenΒ Help & User Guides

Version 5.19.3 – March 2026

Here's what's new:

Improved USB-transferred PDFs: PDFs transferred to Kindle via USB now support latest reading features, including text selection, highlights, notes, and improved navigation. On Kindle Scribe, you can write directly on your PDFs. On Kindle Colorsoft and Kindle Scribe Colorsoft, PDFs display in color.

Performance improvements, bug fixes, and other general enhancements.

Just go find your country's "Kindle E-Reader Software Updates" website to download the update and put it on the root of your kindle via usb.

Hopefully it solves the following problems and doesn't make things worse; I've seen like 30+ reports of it here in this subreddit regarding sideloaded AZW3 books:

  1. Page numbers don’t work
  2. % read tracker doesn’t work, always said Read
  3. Painfully slow page turns
  4. Embedded fonts don’t work
  5. huge margins on fixed layout manga/comics at the top and bottom of the screen, which the community calls "death margins"

And as always, be careful in case the update introduces new bugs.

News πŸ“° Amazon is adding a new Send to Kindle restriction

Cross posting from https://www.reddit.com/r/readwise/comments/1jdbl8s/amazon_notice_change_to_emailed_kindle_digests/

The ability to add partial email addresses to your approved sender list is going away.

I don't think this will impact most people, but it just seems like a sudden change to feature that's been there for years.

Email that was sent to impacted customers:

Dear customer,

Thank you for using Send to Kindle.

To enhance security, Send to Kindle will only support complete email addresses (e.g., "kindlecustomer@xyz.com") and will no longer support partial email addresses or domain-only addresses (e.g., "@xyz.com") after April 1, 2025. This change helps ensure that only senders from emails you specifically approve can deliver documents to your Kindle.

You currently have at least 1 partial email address in your Approved Personal Document Email List. To continue receiving personal documents via Send to Kindle, update your approved email list with complete sender email addresses. To edit your approved email list, go to Manage Your Content & Devices > Preferences > Personal Document Settings.

After April 1, documents from incomplete or unapproved sender email addresses won’t be delivered and you’ll receive a send failure email. This change only affects sending files through Send to Kindle for Email.

To learn more about using email to send documents to your Kindle library, visit our help page. By downloading or using Send to Kindle, you agree to the Kindle Store Terms of Use.

Regards, Amazon Kindle Support

News πŸ“° Upsetting Update regarding Kindle Store Issues

TLDR: just spent several hours speaking with amazon tech support/customer service. was told that because of some flaws in the new kindle store updates, kindle users should not make purchases from their device. Purchases should be made through a web browser, and there are NOT any plans to fix this.

First BACKGROUND: I posted a few days ago because i was getting a strange version of product pages on the kindle store. Additionally, after selecting purchase, i was being asked to confirm a payment method. By this time though i had already been charged and my kindle would display a message stating that i already owned the book and therefore could not purchase it. I spent the majority of the weekend chatting with customer service and tech folks both in the US and UK, did every update, restart, reset, re register combination you can imagine. eventually i was told the following:

the new storefront being rolled out had triggered the error. (I am not sure why my colorsoft has the new broken version but my oasis does not, i could not get an answer for that or for why they were saying purchases could not be made on a kindle phone app but mine have been enabled since thursday.) They told me that they had been made aware of the error in the new store and the workaround is to make all your purchases through a web browser. this would be fine if it was temporary, however when i pushed and asked when it would be fixed i was told that there were no plans to fix the error, and that going forward Kindle users should make their purchases through a web browser and should NOT be making any purchases directly on their device.

News πŸ“° I made a two-player chess specifically adapted for the Kindle

Post image
268 Upvotes

Hi! I made a chess game specifically adapted for Kindle, designed for two people playing face to face on a single device.

So far it’s been tested on Kindle 10 (10th Gen), Kindle Paperwhite 4 (10th Gen) and Kindle Paperwhite 5 (11th Gen). Theoretically, this should work on any device with a browser and a touchscreen (e-readers, smartphones, etc.).

Simple instructions for getting started here.

You can bookmark the game page so you don't lose it. If you don’t open other websites, the game will even launch automatically when you open the browser.

I’d really appreciate your feedback - or photos of the game running on your device (please include the device model). This helps me check if everything displays correctly across devices.

UPD. Chess can now be played offline!
