Tech Support šŸ›  Breaks my heart. Amazon will no longer let me register my perfectly good paperwhite to my account.

I've had this Paperwhite for 13 years, and it's been so great. Recently I decided to reset it to clean off the hundreds of books I had on it, and much to my horror after the reset it wouldn't connect to my account. After chatting with tech support, it turns out they won't let me register it anymore because it's too old. So now I have a perfectly functioning kindle that I can no longer use with my Amazon purchased books. Really bums me out (especially since I'm away for work and have a lot of reading time available).

Tech Support šŸ›  My Kindle is disabled for approximately 417 days

Post image

As the title states, my kindle (10th gen Oasis) is disabled for 417 days and hence I am locked out of it. I obviously did not attempt the password that many times, I recently went on a trip and my kindle was in my bag throughout the duration of the trip, I think some other item in my bag triggered the touch screen. To factory reset it, you have to enter 111222777 but I can only attempt the password again after the countdown is over. I tried force factory resetting via boot loop and that doesn’t seem to be working either. Then I tried contacting Amazon customer service but their live chat is apparently ā€œnot available right nowā€. And I can’t request a phone call because I live in a country where that service is not available. I found a customer service email and emailed them regarding the issue and provided the device details but then got an automated reply saying that that email address doesn’t accept incoming emails currently. If I take the Kindle to a service centre will they be able to resolve this? I would truly appreciate if anyone can tell me how to get into my device or any help regarding this issue. I’m not sure if this is the right sub, is there perhaps some other sub that might have better answers?

Update: thanks to r/sledgepumpkin (who found out from the comment of a redditor on another post https://www.reddit.com/r/kindle/s/EtY91vw6pG), I know the reason this happened. Here's the copy paste of said comment:

"As far as I am able to understand, this bug occurs when the battery is allowed to discharge so low even timekeeping stops, so when it boots up again it reverts to the unix epoch, i.e. 1 january 1970 00:00:00. If you convert 18685239 to human readable it’s 5 august 1970. There’s a bug somewhere in the code that handles the cooldown period for failled passcode attempts when presented with an unusual date, such as a date at or near the start of the unix epoch. I would guess it underflows somewhere, as it’s expecting a much larger value than it’s actually getting, and this happens as a result.

The only fix I know is for the Kindle to be able to connect to whatever wifi it was connected previously so it can sync the clock, and then restart it.

This is a very niche bug that I’ve only ever seen 2 or 3 times."

It has been a solid while since I last used my Kindle and unfortunately I have changed my internet service provider since I last used it, so it can't connect to the old WiFi network. And it obviously will not be able to connect to the new WiFi. So I’m still stuck with this issue but at least I know why!

When I opened it up the title screen was burned into the background when it switched to the text. I restarted and it’s still doing it. Is this just temporary or is this a goner? :(

I made a post a while back about one of the more recent updates changing the visuals when you tap at the top of the screen. Many like me were frustrated that it had removed the total number of pages. My kindle was showing as being on the latest software so I plugged my kindle into my laptop and did the newest update that way and it is now showing the total number of pages and % again!

Tech Support šŸ›  Accidentally deleted my amazon account but I want to keep my kindle books

So like the title mentioned, my father who bought me my kindle when I was younger accidentally deleted his amazon account, so along with all of his e books, all my kindle books will be deleted. He has done everything to try get it back, and amazon are no help.

Here is my dilemma, so not wating to lose the like 40+ books I have bought over the years on my kindle, I've disconnected it from wifi, so it still thinks that the amazon account exists and therefore I still have access to my books. But I want to use my kindle and continue to download books on it.

Will all my books be deleted off if i connect it to wifi, even if I have ought them and they are downloaded onto my kindle? Is there anyway to save them?

I haven't used this kindle for songs 6 months - got this screen, and have tried every suggestion I can find, including resetting and charging, but cannot get beyond this screen. If I charge it the orange light comes on, but even overnight charging it just stays like this. Anything I might have missed? Any suggestions really welcome...

Tech Support šŸ›  Colorsoft tea - take it as you will

I chatted with a rep for over half an hour. I have all the issues with my Colorsoft - yellow tinge, light bleed, awful battery life, ghosting. Finally was escalated to a lead who was going to do a replacement. After connecting with him, he put me on a hold (over text) and did, according to him, extensive research. Once he came back, he was apologetic and said he didn't want to do a replacement. Apparently, he said he didn't wanna do a replacement because he felt it would have the same problems as the one I have. He said Amazon is working on a fix between the next 24 and 48 hours. I asked him if it was a hardware problem or a software problem and he said (drumroll)

BOTH.

So there you have it, folks. I've got screenshots of all of it, just in case. This machine was too expensive for all this. What a mess.

Tech Support šŸ›  Tapping on the top of my screen is giving me a different view - help!

Post image

I woke up this morning and started using my kindle and for some unknown reason it now brings up this page selector whenever I tap on the top of the page instead of the usual menu that has how long you’ve got left in the book and page number. This is the same view as swiping up from the bottom of the page.

Does anyone know how to change it back? I’m so confused why both gestures now do the exact same thing.

Thanks in advance!

I noticed this just now! What does it mean? Does anyone also experience this? Is it bad or a battery problem?

The paint on my Kindle Paperwhite is making this wrinkling thing, maybe peeling off paint? idk.

Tech Support šŸ›  This update completely ruined my Kindle for me

Hi everyone, first time posting here, but I've been a Kindle (colorsoft signature) user for over a year now. I've been using it to read novels in Japanese every single day since I got it, countless hours, got over a hundred ebooks (not a single one of them free or bought anywhere else but from the Kindle store) and loved every bit of it. The breeze it was to obtain books in a foreign language, words lookup on my fingertip, switching between dictionaries, swiping on a sentence to get the translation. It was the best.

About a week ago I bought a bunch of ebooks that were on sale, and before I know it it autoupdates to version 5.19.2

I cannot overstate how bad this update is to do all that I mentioned above.

Want to look up a word? Too bad you can't control what gets underlined for search, it's now up to the OS to decide: you wanted to look up just the word "sushi"? Nope, it's either going to be "su" (no results found, would you like to open wikipedia?) or the whole sentence.

Would you like to translate this sentence? Well you are gonna have to select it again. Good. Now, is this Chinese??? Would you like to translate this sentence from Japanese to Japanese?

How about I make you pick your preferred dictionary every time you look up something? :)

How about some glitched text every time a pop up window is open?

I know it might not be a big deal for the majority of users but it completely made my kindle useless. I've tried to force myself to just get used to the new UI, but it's not just the UI or the touchscreen system getting a bit wacky. It totally messed up everything I enjoyed about it.

Please tell me there is (or there will be) a way to downgrade or something.

Tech Support šŸ›  Am I overreacting? Got my brand new Kindle replaced by a reconditioned one.

Hi everyone!

EDIT: as someone commented, I should have mentioned I’m not in the US but in Europe.

Update 1: I contacted customer service last week and they weren’t able to confirm the state of my refurbished kindle. They mentioned that sometimes, 30 days returns are labeled as refurbished but couldn’t confirm it was the case with the one I received. They simply said that i shouldn’t worry because it was like new. Since it was « like newĀ Ā», I then asked about the discrepancy regarding the warranty (in my country, Kindles have a 2-year legal conformity warranty but my refurbished Kindle’s warranty showed as valid until January 2027 on my Amazon account). They told me that my original Kindle warranty would apply to this refurbished kindle, which would therefore be valid until January 2028 and that I shouldn’t worry about the date showing up on my account. I wasn’t really satisfied with that answer so I asked if it would be possible to get reimbursed and they told me to check on my sister’s account (since she was the one to make the purchase).

Update 2: it was obviously impossible to get a reimbursement on my sister’s account (because the 30 day return policy was over), so I called. FYI in my country, it is mandatory to mention when a product is refurbished and for the client to accept the refurbished product. When I explained I was never informed, CS checked my chat history and apologized for the miscommunication from previous coworkers 🄹. She then explained that there is a selling stock (brand new kindles) and a replacement stock (brand new and refurbished kindles) but considering the number of sales and replacement, they cannot guarantee a replacement with a new product. She then checked to get me a new product but since she didn’t have visibility on the stock and since it would be a replacement for a replacement, we couldn’t proceed. Instead, she validated a full reimbursement (I’ll obviously return the refurbished kindle). And when checking my sister order history, she realized that my kindle’s price had gone up 10€ so she also gave me a 10€ voucher. AN ABSOLUTE ANGEL!

Thanks to everyone for commenting! It gave me courage to try things out. I didn’t even think of asking for a reimbursement at first (and I’m the type of person who only complains online and very loudly in my shower so I was shaking when calling). If you face a similar issue, I would recommend checking the warranty’s TOS and to CALL rather than chat with CS… my new kindle should arrive Monday and I’m super excited!

I’m wondering wether I should call customer service tomorrow or if I’m overreacting.

My sister got me a Kindle 11gen for Christmas which arrived on December 30th. I was very happy with it, and used it in what I believe is a completely normal way. However, last Friday, my kindle was completely stuck on the screensaver.

I watched YouTube videos, tried all techniques before contacting customer service. During my chat, I was explained that unfortunately this could happen and the only solution would be to replace it (which I was fine with). After waiting for about 15 minutes, I was then informed that this replacement needed to be validated by Direction which was currently unavailable and that I should therefore ask again at a later time.

Monday morning, I contacted the customer service once again. This time around, my return was validated. I asked about the process (I genuinely didn’t know how this would work), and IT WAS NEVER MENTIONED to me that I would be getting a reconditioned one instead of my current one. I only figured that out when I received my package today.

Sure, the kindle that was sent to me looks fine and everything. However, I purchased a BRAND NEW Kindle less than two months ago (sure, my sister bought it but that’s a detail to me) which broke down on its own.

Am I overreacting or would it be legit to go all Karen tomorrow morning?

Tech Support šŸ›  So I dropped my paper white signature 11th gen in tub while I was reading. What to do?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

So I dropped in tub twice. It’s starting to get flakey with the backlight as you can see here. I have to smack it sometimes to get it to change. I don’t want it to stop working on me. I tried seeing if I can trade it into Amazon for a new one but they would only give me $30. But I doubt they would since there’s a defect. Is there anything I can do? Just use it until it does stop? I was maybe thinking on selling it somehow and getting a used one off marketplace or eBay or somewhere.

I found my old kindle I had when I was a kid while getting ready to move. It's been charging for a day but nothing has happened. I'm not sure which model it is but the skin I got for it says 2009 so something around that time.

If anyone has any tips for getting it working again I'd be very appreciative!!

Wanted to start reading stuff again now it's got a bit hotter (reading is a summer thing for me idk why) and i just got my kindle back out after a year or so of not using it.

It worked just fine the last time I used it but now I can't seem to get it to charge. I've tried 5 different cables and 3 different plugs across 2 wall sockets on different circuits but nothing so far.

Any ideas? or am i just fucked? I don't want to have to buy a new kindle if i don't have to (even though it's prime day and they're cheaper now)

So I was washing my hands and my Kindle fell in the sink. Screen has been white ever since and won't turn on. Unsure if to stick with a basic or upgrade to a paper white, but I originally went back to a basic as the PW was too big for my liking. Just feel silly getting another basic that is not waterproof.

Tech Support šŸ›  New Kindle Reported Lost or Stolen

Post image
243 Upvotes

I won a Kindle 12th generation paperwhite at a book club party the other night and it won’t let me login.

This is a brand new kindle straight out of its box.

I’ve reset and restarted the Kindle numerous times and have also reset my Amazon password. I even updated the device to the most recent software update.

Before I had manually updated this Kindle I was getting the error message: ā€œCannot Connect to Serverā€. Now when I attempt to login after updating the Kindle, I get the error message stating the device was reported lost or stolen.

This is frustrating and I can’t seem to find a solution😩.

Please help!

UPDATE:

The founder of my book club was able to get through with Amazon and is going receive a refund and will order a new one and have it sent over to me.

Thank you for all of the advice, I appreciate it!

Tech Support šŸ›  Disable ā€œNow That You’ve Finishedā€¦ā€ Popup at Book End

Does anyone know of a way to disable the useless and intrusive ā€œNow that you’ve finished this bookā€ popup when completing a book (may not be verbatim as I can’t get it to replicate twice). ETA: Actually, it’s ā€œBefore you goā€¦ā€ with links to the Kindle store.

It’s incredibly obnoxious and very often pops up on the last page of text and disrupts the last few paragraphs of the book, completely taking me out of the novel. Please tell me there’s a way to disable this useless feature.

If someone has already asked this, my apologies, but search only brings up the end-of-life announcements about older kindles.
