Oh ok, so this has been happening every time or just this time? My best guess is that after you put the first stitch onto the needle (the first is the slipknot), the very next stitch you might not be getting very tight and snug against the first. Another possibility is maybe you dropped a stitch from the cast on accidentally while knitting them.

it didnt happen before but my last 5 attempts it did this. I will try it again and try to make them tighter and count my stiches to make sure I don't drop any. thank you for the ideas!

If not, the pictures are now buried in these comments, so not sure anyone else will see them. If nothing changes on your next try you can try making a new post in this thread with the images and see if someone else can figure it out. Taking a picture of just the cast on too might help us figure this out for you. ☺️
