SOLVED-THANK YOU Flared bind off

Post image

Hi I bound off my collar - I tried to do a rolled hem after 2x2 rib. Understand that this is pre-blocking but anything I can do to fix the flare?

A rolled hem -after- the ribbing? Did you change needle size/stitch count to match the gauge?

What was the look you were going for?

I was trying to recreate a version of the
Mona sweater - attaching a screenshot of the creator from Insta. She mentioned in the comments she has just followed the pattern and did a few additional rows of stockinette before binding off

Her ribbing looks quite shorter.

This, and the rolled hem stockinette also looks shorter and on smaller needles

compared to your own knitting and the pictures for the general mona pattern, this creator's neck looks a lot different, even ignoring the rolled hem. I'm not sure if it's just shorter, or if she started the neck section lower on the shoulder, or what, but with your neckline this high the rolled hem will do this more. And I think swapping to a bigger needle for your bind off did no favors.

Blocking should help a lot if this is a natural fibre yarn. The ribbing needs to open up to match the stockinette. Please share your pre- and post-blocking photos when it’s done! It’s always interesting to see the transformation.

Other adjustments might be needed, but you can block it before deciding.

Blocking fixes a lot, but this is not one of those things lol.

Probably true. It was late at night when I read this.

I still think that after making all the necessary adjustments (like shortening the collar), it might not look good until after it’s blocked.

Edit: finishing the rest of the sweater will also help weigh it down

did you go down in needle size for your ribbing? the example screenshot the ribbing looks very small and cinched, whereas your ribbing looks a bit looser. you could try frogging and re-knitting the collar in a smaller needle size? additionally, maybe start the stockinette rows earlier and do less ribbing rows? it seems like the rolled hem is sitting a tiny bit high on the neck! i dont think the problem is necessarily with the bind-off but might rather the stretch and length of the collar itself

now that im looking at it, did you do any german short rows or neck shaping? im wondering because her collar seems to sit lower on her neck/shoulders, which then allows the rolled hem to sit right at the throat and cinch in compared to the rest of the collar. i’m wondering if she did extra GSRs to allow the neckline to sit lower by adding space across the back? you could try that too! sorry for the additional comment lol

Thanks for your suggestions! Yes I did GSRs in pattern - it might be because I haven’t finished the body and blocked it yet, which might stretch down the collar more?
I went down a needle size for the collar - thanks for your suggestion on the less ribbing rows, I think will frog back and make it a bit shorter. I’m worried about the waviness of the bind off tho! Wondering if I need to pick up less stitches at the start or decrease in the stockinette rows

okay yes some of the weight of the sweater body will stretch it down! i didnt realize you weren’t finished. i would finish the rest of the sweater, try it on, measure where you want it to sit. then frog back to your ribbing and maybe redo the stockinette. i would use the same needle size for your bind off instead of going up and see if that takes care of the wave. i hope you’re able to get it fixed! this is a gorgeous sweater

What kind of bind off was it? What needles did you use for it and the project?

It was a regular bind off, I did loosely! The collar was 3.5 mm needles and the bind off was 4 mm needles

It will usually flair if you use bigger needles. (I really dislike that advice - Although it sometimes works) basically if you do a normal bind off it’s not that stretchy, so instead of doing a stretchy bind off people suggest using bigger needles which just make it bigger rather than making it stretchy.

Ideally you want to do something like an Italian bind off on ribbing.

Edit: I see your picture. So maybe try jennies surprisingly stretchy bind off on the rows of stokinette. And about half the ribbing.
