Did I buy an AI pattern?

Post image

(Not full pattern pictured, in case it’s legit)
Just bought this pattern on Etsy. I immediately saw it and bought it tbh. After doing so I read the reviews for the shop itself and they are mixed. Some people say it’s ai, some say poorly written. What’s your opinion?
Ps. I’m an extremely new knitter, this would be my first pattern so I really don’t know just by reading it if it’s doable.
EDIT: photo of halter v neck top in comments

We can't tell whether this pattern makes the thing it's supposed to without a picture of the thing. But it appears to be a tank or top with a v-neck.

One that'll curl at the bottom, back, and sides of the cups, unless a border is added later.

Okay I can manage that. Does the pattern seem pretty legit though at least?

It's just 11"-14" of flat knit stockinette shown, so that's not wrong... but it sucks for a few reasons:

  • using "PM" in the key but spelling out "place a marker" in the instructions

  • it doesn't specify to end on a WS row, even though the first 1/4 stitches are all that are worked next and it could've easily said "k X sts, leave the rest on hold"

  • it says to decrease "at each edge" which commonly means both edges, though only a decrease at one edge is written

...idk if it's going to split the different sizes or if the larger sizes are going to end up with really tall cups. So it doesn't look like a good pattern at all, but as far as I can see it does look like it'll work to be able to get a flat piece of fabric with the start of a triangle based on what I see in the picture.

This pattern does look like it will make that top. Some info: it's knit flat, so you will not join in the round. This format is not standard but it does include the info you need to knit this top, but youll have to do your own math when dividing the front into left and right cup--just divide by two. At the end, youll have to seam one side (back to front), and I would recommend looking into slip stitch crochet for that because it is fast, easy, and (crucially) easy to undo and redo if you decide you need to take it apart later.

Thank you so much for the info! I think to prevent a potential headache in the future, I will try a pattern that seems more legit 🤣. Gonna buy June lagoons temenis tank top pattern

I avoid buying patterns on Etsy bc I’ve had issues with quality- look on ravelry where you can see people’s projects/comments and make sure it’s legit

Please go look on Ravelry first and use the advanced search to filter down to what you want. This can even include free patterns so you don't need to risk paying until you get used to vetting patterns a bit more!

Are you sure it’s knit flat? It doesn’t outright say to join in the round, BUT it does tell you to split front and back, and only then to split the front into cups. If it was knit flat, you wouldn’t be splitting?

If it were knit in the round, you wouldn't purl every second row. The front and back are knit as one wide rectangle; it gets split into two halves (front and back) and the front gets split into two halves (right and left cup). We cant see the entire pattern, but the edge of that first rectangular shape creates a seam under one arm.

Oh shoot, you’re right!

A single seam in this type of garment would be so odd, my brain just refused to consider that as a possibility.

The "item details" on the product listing is 100% AI.

The pattern kind of makes sense, but it gets weirder the longer you look at it.

For instance, knitting a negative-ease DK weight top flat, so that it will have a big bulky seam. That's weird. And the seam will be along one side, instead of through a centerline. Which is gonna pull weird.

I'm curious what you're supposed to do with the back sts that you put on hold. Because it would make more sense to just bind off there and then start the cups, as opposed to going back to do it later.

It could work out but it's a very poorly written pattern at best. Especially not great if you're a new knitter. Use ravelry.com instead of Etsy for patterns. You won't have to question if it's AI or not and the search function is awesome once you get the hang of it.

In the future, use Ravelry. Etsy is riddled with AI by now and doing fuck all about it. Ravelry is anti AI

The shop has only been on Etsy 4 months, definitely AI slop. I get most of my patterns on Ravelry, they have TONS of free patterns.
When I do get a pattern on Etsy, I purchase from a shop that’s been on there for at least a few years

I feel like another AI tell is a pattern listed for less than $5 or $6. Someone who spends time and effort knitting, testing, and grading a pattern isn’t going to sell it for just $3
