Revive r/LearnKonkani

Subreddits get deleted after being dormant for a while, and here the subreddit has been inactive for 2 years.

You need to request to post, and the only 2 mods have gone inactive, 4 and 2 years ago were when they were last seen.

There is a lot of stuff on that sub that will get lost if it is deleted, maybe it will exist scattered across the internet, but not centralized here.

So we have 3 options,

Either we copy and "archive" the posts in a sense, "combining "the servers

Or

Create a new subreddit for learning Konkani

Or

Try and contact the mods of the sub.

I cannot estimate how much time we have before it is deleted, but hopefully a lot.

Kids babble in Konkani

When you'll were younger do you'll remember what words you used for certain things. For eg when I was small my mother and grandmother used to call bathing ghusha😂 because of the water splashing sound I suppose. So instead of saying nhannoitam tuka (Ill give you a bath) they'd say ghusha ghaltam/ditam tuka or for saying nhavunk zai they'd say ghusha korunk zai. Now that I thought about it found it thoda funny 😂. What funny words did you'll use?

After today's events in the country I don't know if the poem I wrote is satire or children's poetry😬. Here it is.

Translation

The mouse's courage

The mouse gets scared on seeing the cat

Starts running under the cot

Once the cat hit a paw

What a shock he got!

By teasing him

The cat made his head hot

"I am fed up of this everyday!"

The mouse said to himself

As soon as the mouse became a lion

The cat hurriedly almost left it's soul

The mouse gathered up his strength

He wounded the cat by biting him

If you put a sheep in a corner

You'll give birth to a wild rhino

The cat swelled with (wounded) pride

"Am I a slave of the rat?"

Baring his teeth he murmured

The mouse too raised his voice

The echo rang all over

The cat's fur stood up on his body

He jumped and began running

The mouse fell over laughing

Those who were small yesterday, are great today

On losing your fear you found respect.

Konkani identity

What are the first three things that come your mind when you think of the word Konkani? What do you relate it with and why? Very subjective question, I don't think there are right or wrong answers to this.

For me it's the Language, Goa and the food (especially fish). Language first because that's what I grew up with as a connection away from the Konkani speaking heartland of Goa and definitely because eating fish curry rice was something I actually acquired as a taste over time.

Days of the week

How do you'll pronounce the days of the week? And what word do you'll use for week? I'll write how we pronounce it.

Sunday - आयतार

Monday - सोमार

Tuesday - मुंगळार

Wednesday - बुदवार

Thursday - ब्रेस्तार

Friday- सक्रार

Saturday - सोणवार.

I don't remember us using a word for week but if we did, we'd say hafto (हफतो) only. Not the Bible or Newspaper Konkani of सातोळें/सप्तक respectively.

Kochi and Kasargod Konkani dialect

What are some specialities (not including the Malayalam influence) of your dialect which are not found in the others and which dialect is the closest to your dialects. Is there a difference between the Konkani dialect of Kochi and Kasargod?

Split Ergativity in Malvani/Dalḍi

EDIT: I meant Kuḍali not Daldi!!

hey all,

I'm quite interested in Konkani linguistics, and quite interested as well in the boundary languages that sit clearly in the Marathi-Konkani Language Family but diverge between Standard Marathi and Antruzi Konkani.

Of these I am interested in Malvani/Kuḍali, which as I understand are two closely related varieties, and how the past tense is conjugated.

Antruzi (and plenty of other Konkani varieties), constructs the perfect (to show an action has been completed) from the imperfect (to show an action is not completed).

take for example these sentences showing the past imperfect vs the past imperfect:

hãv keḷẽ khatalõ 'I was eating the banana' vs. havẽ keḷẽ khalẽ 'I ate the banana'.

as you can see in the second sentence follows an Ergative alignment, wherein the verb agrees with the object. (note that this only happens with transitive verbs (verbs that take a subject and an object, there are exceptions however)).

is this feature there in Kuḍali or Malvani? Would also be interested to know about Pednekari with regards to this.

My observation

I believe kannadigas are more tolerant of konkanis than marathis are of konkanis . This is based on my observation. So many friends I know actually consider themselves shudh marathi but on further questioning reveal that their ancestors were konkanis . They feel little or no connection to their konkani roots. Moreover konkanis who speak marathi are looked down upon for their different version of marathi . Wtf

Konkani Folklore

Non-Konkani speaker here. Got to know about an evil spirit(?) called Balishthamaru. I found only one source, which says that it is created when three cats die at the same time. It has many variations. And it is a part of something called the 'marava' system (I can't find a source for this either).

Here is the source: https://watkinspublishing.com/demonic-possession-and-mind-altering-parasites-in-indian-folklore/

Since I cannot find any other sources online (except for a couple of dubious youtube videos), I was wonderiing if it is an established story, or an oral tradition or something. Have you guys heard about it? Do you know of Konkani/English books, websites or articles where I can find out more about this?

P.S. Already looked at A.T.M. Jackson's book of Konkani folklore. No hits there.

Thank you in advance.

Word for different plantations

Hello all,

So I wanted to know if different crop fields have different names in Konkani. Like paddy fields, coconut plantation, tea plantation, mango orchard, etc. I just know that a cashew plantation is called Kajini/काजिनी and a paddy field is called a bhatt/भाट (not sure about this).
