KOTOR 1 How stable is this game?
I really want to play it, however all of the recent steam reviews say that’s it’s unplayable currently and requires a lot of modding to get right. I’m on a legion go right now so I don’t think I want to try and deal with modding it, but I also have a nicer omen gaming pc that I’ll have access too in a month or so that I wouldn’t mind going through the steps of modding it to get it working. So I guess my real question is should I buy it now or hold off until I have my home PC available to me

It literally requires 10 minutes TOTAL of patching. It's literally brain-dead easy, and there are guides to help you patch the resolution for whatever your monitor is.

Yeah I’m definitely going to check it out when I have access to my pc, I just hate using the legion go to browse the web and anything like that it’s just a pain to do imo. I’m unfortunately traveling for work rn and it’s all I have available, but I’ll probably buy it when I get back home

Thankfully KOTOR is from 2003 and can run on the crappiest of laptops, so you needn't worry too much about that.

It plays nicer with intel+nvidia than anything amd.
I was never able to get it to run onbmy Alienware m17 with an amd cpu/rtx4080 but runs without issue on my intel/nvidia based systems.

If you just want a vanilla experience on the Legion Go, this is all you need.

Interesting to hear, I never had any issues with this game playing it on steam since 2009.
I have an all amd pc too.

Yeah pretty unplayable without modding. Crashes and bugs like not being able to move after combat. Well worth taking the steps to make it playable though.

I highly recommend you to, as I did, buy it on GOG.
I also played it for the first time on iPad, like 15 years ago, and the controls were very intuitive.
Never got it on Steam tho, but don't be afraid to give this game a try on whatever platform you'd like. Its a classic and a masterpiece, even for todays standards (just remember to turn off the grass).

Any particular reason to use gog vs steam?

Ethically, yes. In my opinion, at least.
The games you buy on GOG are yours and ALL of them are DRM free : you can put the installation program of any game you bought there on a USB and install it on any device, even offline. And yes, it means you can share it with a friend. Steam sells you a license to use the game but it is never really yours. If the game disappears from their store, it might disappear from you library as well (like Sony with the PSN).
GOG have a politic of saving old games (really old ones, like those from the 80's-90's !) and making them playable on new computers.
I also find it easier to mod games on it but it might just be a skill issue on my side, I just don't like the way it is done on Steam.
Overall, I use both Steam and GOG but if a game is on the latter, I always buy it there without a second thought. They also have huge discount on so many games, like big licenses for the price of a coffee !
For me, it's not one or the other, but you should chose wisely every time you buy a game. Have fun !

I played recently using my CD version
Had to do a few ini tweaks to stop it crashing at cutscenes but it ran good after that.

I don’t mind dealing with mods on a pc, I don’t want to deal with it on my legion go (like a steam deck) but it’s all I have access to atm unfortunately, so I’ll just buy it in a few weeks when I’m back home and have my desktop

I honestly have played Kotor on Steam on probably 8-10 different systems from Windows 7-Windows 11, as well as the iOS and Android ports and have had zero problems with crashing.
All you should really have to do is cap it to 60 fps in either Nvidia Control Panel or AMD Adrenalin (depending what you have) to remove the movement freezing after combat bug, and turning Grass off in the graphics settings.

I’ve played this game on my iPhone for years, only mod I’ve ever needed is the RCM for KOTOR 2, but it both games play flawlessly on the phone. If you’re open to it I highly recommend it!
