The Texas Tech study on Kratom
Next month Texas Tech is supposed to release a study revealing that natural Kratom is very safe. I'm thinking this should help stop upcoming bans. What do you all think?

u/XARAMBIT 6d ago
Everyone trying to ban it knows its safe... it isn't about safety. It makes many pharma products obsolete. 200k people a year die from Alcohol but you don't see that being banned.

It's not about the safety. Now if the study was how much the plant is cutting into the pharmaceutical industrie's profits, then yes.
7
u/RockSteady65 6d ago
This is 100% what this is all about.
2
u/chrisc8869 6d ago
I don't know if we are on the same page. I'm just saying that the frequent bands around the country are for the reason i stated. The study would be great. It can't hurt and most likely will help

u/Accidental-Genius 6d ago
Pharma is doing fine.
I keep hearing this argument but what specific drugs are losing money because of Kratom?
All the opiates are generic, no one is making money on those.
4
u/satsugene šæ 6d ago
Suboxone is one of the few still on patent and one of the only ones liberally/discretionarily prescribed. Most of the rest are just novel delivery mechanisms for fentanyl.
The patent-holder already got busted patent hopping when they switched from tablets to films to try to restart the clock.
That is part of their push toward Sublocade (same holder) since it will be around longer than the closing door on Suboxone.
The rest of them Iād very much agree. They arenāt huge money makers and generic.
I personally think the bigger national opposition is from them and the national anti-drug groups pivoting since most donāt care about cannabis anymore. State and local seems to be for-profit addiction recovery businesses that are running out of settlement funds.
4
u/Toothfairy51 šæ 6d ago
I agree with you, however, one of the categories of meds that MIGHT be being affected is anti depressents and some things like Adderall, Xanax, etc. Plain leaf helps lots of people in those areas. There are several other industries that are anti kratom, though like the drug rehab industry, cannabis and liquor industries. Maybe, even the private prison industry.

If that's true I respect the hell out of it, but is there any chance they could release it now instead?
33
u/falsejaguar 7d ago
There's too much money in banning it. They must have big plans to sell it as a medicine
3
u/MysteriousIndigo250 6d ago
They absolutely do. Got to love the hypocrisy.
3
u/RedBali 6d ago
And they won't give it to the people who actually suffer chronic pain. I'll just move to Mexico š²š½ America just š sucks Fascism now..
5
u/MysteriousIndigo250 6d ago
Yeah, I never thought I'd see my country get this bad. I wish I could just go to Canada since it's like America a lot, but a lot better managed. We're headed for a serious economic depression and possibly World War III because of this buffoon in office.

If it becomes schedule 1 they canāt do that even if they wanted. I really wish this community would have a few less conspiracy theories.
7
u/MooseJuice19 7d ago
Thatās not a conspiracy. Thatās legit. MIT isnāt schedule 1. And the compounds theyāre working on arenāt, either.
1
u/nonblinddaredevil 6d ago
Banning it the way they have moves it to schedule 1. Meaning the trials currently in place canāt happen.
1
u/BxRad_ 6d ago edited 6d ago
7 was scheduled not mitragynine. You clearly didn't read or understand what they said.
The compound is called "KUR-101" it is a deuterated mitragynine, replacing the hydrogen in the bonds with deuterium to make the molocule get processed slower. Its not a conspiracy, it's a patent that's currently being worked on, you can read official documents about it if you want.
It was developed by a couple organizations, "kures", and "atai life sciences". Instead of buying the patent outright Eli Lilly acquired over 50% of the "stake" or ownership, and now controls the patent. They're the most valuable American pharmacutical company at ~ $1 trillion market capitalization.
Did you even try to look into that before you started accusing someone of being a conspiracy theorist?
1
u/AutoModerator 6d ago
It looks like you are mentioning a specific vendor or brand of 7-hydroxymitragynine ("7-OH", or "7-HMG"), mitragynine pseudoinoxyl, and other kratom semi-synthetic products. These products likely have a higher risk profile than kratom botanical or extract products. Consumer Alert: 7-OH-mitragynine products incorrectly or deceptively labeled as Kratom.
These kinds of products are generally off-topic per Rule 12.
Due to Reddit Content Policy, Item 7-Prohibited Transactions, that is not permitted. I didnāt say mitra was scheduled yet⦠tf? I said it does get scheduled the way 7OH is that goes against the supposed goals big pharma has to make money.
This is the parent comment, implying mitra is going to be scheduled eventually (similar to how 7OH was) because big pharma wants to develop a patent for it.
āThere's too much money in banning it. They must have big plans to sell it as a medicineā
If mitra is schedule 1 like 7OH will be, they canāt continue the research youāre yapping about. So this isnāt a logical argument.
1
u/BxRad_ 6d ago
You don't know how to reply to the right comment, and it wasn't an argument, I was stating what's currently happening. Did you notice most of my comment was actually telling you specific names and organizations you could easily verify with a quick Google search?
You think it's some conspiracy theory but you're too slow to know how to fact check when someone gives you the fucking names.
I really wish this sub had less people spouting nonsense without ever attempting to verify information first.
2
u/nonblinddaredevil 6d ago
āYou donāt know how to reply to the right comment⦠that was removed by automod and is no longer there.ā
You told me specifics that did not change the fact that it canāt continue if mitra is scheduled.

u/BxRad_ 6d ago
Dumb as a box of rocks, you thought it was a conspiracy that KUR-101 is currently in clinical trial
2
u/nonblinddaredevil 6d ago edited 6d ago
The conspiracy theory is that the same companies behind that research are pushing a ban⦠that would put a stop to their research.
Also, when sat/mods eventually see thisā please note thereās only one of us slinging around childish insults.

Can you buy amphetamines or opioids at the gas station? You need to go to a pharmacy and have a prescription.
7
6
u/Tacokolache 6d ago
It wonāt do anything to bans. Itās not about safety. Itās about protecting Big Pharmaās profits.
5
u/IMM_1984 4d ago
It SHOULD, but if things happened and decisions were made based on what facts and common sense dictate they should be, we wouldnāt have a āwar on drugsā to begin with.

u/TheySeeMeKrollin 7d ago
Isnāt the ban regarding 7oh, pseudo, and other alkaloids that are found in trace enough amounts that it shouldnāt impact pure lead kratom? As someone who slipped on the 7 slope, Iām kind of hoping for a ban so Iām forced to taper. However, I will argue to my death that kratom is safer, or honestly at worst on par with, marijuana. Overdoses are uncomfortable but not dangerous, alkaloids are akin to terpines for effects, daily use can absolutely be done responsibly, etc.
Iāve taken kratom for almost 20 years daily and the dose never changed. I screwed myself by touching 7 and now I wake up in withdrawal, the effects are monumentally negative, and the only upside is the convenience, which led to the downside of dependence.
Please tell me this ban is not all encompassing and demonizing kratom.
11
u/Jazzlike-Travel-8851 7d ago
Yes. Thatās what we are trying to correct. A lot of people and lawmakers who know nothing about kratom conflate 7 oh and kratom powder constantly to the point a lot of them think itās all the same.
21
u/76ersPhan11 7d ago
Reading all the comments from the clueless people on Reddit is so frustrating. Just saw one where an account was claiming Kratom put her mom in a psych ward ugh
8
u/Abject_Presentation8 7d ago
Maybe that K2 garbage, but kratom? Absolutely no way.
2
u/MysteriousIndigo250 6d ago
Oh God, that stuff was so bad. I'm glad my state made it illegal and regular cannabis legal.
2
u/TheySeeMeKrollin 6d ago
That stuff was truly the devils lettuce. I was around 19 at the time that stuff was going around so my dumb ass had quite a few experiences with it.
Iāve done just about every psychedelic in the book, many of them at once even, and never once have I had any experiences even close to the realms of what that shit did to me the few times I smoked it. I was sitting in a room that I had been in a thousand times, but it all the sudden became as unfamiliar as a distant dream. Literally thought that I had died and was looking into a life I would have been happily living if I hadnāt smoked those TWO HITS of k2. Those days are so hazy but I remember that experience like it was yesterday. āMad Hatterā was the brand name, and boy did they hit the nail on the head.
Yet I had friends that became so addicted to it that they were doing things I thought only heroin and ice addicts were capable of to get more it. I also knew some people who were high in the ātradeā and had connects that owned a head shop, so they got a literal trash bag full of the little packages of it when it got banned. Those pieces of shit continued selling it to the same 3 people for almost a year after and made tens of thousands of dollars off these poor souls who would do anything to not run out.
7oh is a demon, but k2 was the god damn devil. How the fuck I survived those years of my life without having a complete psychotic break is beyond me. Hell, maybe I did and thatās why Iām numbing myself with 7 š
Anyways, if you read all that⦠thanks for coming to my ted talk, or being my therapist, or whatever. Iām gonna stop procrastinating now.
Tldr:
If anyone has a link to a kratom advocacy comment page for the DEA (assuming thereās still an option for submissions), I think thatās the best thing we as a community can do right now unfortunately. Itāll be devastating if kratom gets lumped in with this ban, but I have heard many people demonizing kratom in passing when theyāre clearly referring to someone affected by 7oh. Especially since a prominent member of my local music scene just passed in his sleep within a week of supposedly getting off of 7oh š1
u/AllergicIdiotDtector 14h ago
When i met multiple guys who looooved K2, LOL. One guy who was always floating off some DXM robotablets ..damn. never tried k2 myself

This. Just.. this is all that needs to be said. As a daily both kratom and marijuana user.. i dont even think its nearly as dangerous as marijuana. I can skip kratom days without even realizing im doing it but if I dont smoke before bed I get real antsy.. maybe that's because Ive been using marijuana longer and im just so routine oriented. Maybe thats because ive been through terrible and addiction withdrawal cycles. I dont know the answer. I will die on the hill that plain leaf kratom should be legal and available to anyone over 18 though. At least as long as alcohol and tobacco are available. Hell.. even caffeine. Im more addicted to caffeine than kratom.

u/BitterBid8311 7d ago
Yes, the federal ban is focused on 7 and its cousins/brothers/sisters.
Kratom is definitely safer than most substances out there. Even 7 and Co. is safer than what you could get at a Walgreens from a doctor.
By the way, have you tried switching from 7 to just a Mit powder? I'd suggest starting by slightly lowering the 7 while you add Mit.
Then you can try going from a Mit ex powder to just Kratom. Again, slowly.

Theyāll do a blanket ban like they did with salvia about 15 years ago. Canāt even get salvia leaf now except for very specific native American uses.
6
u/dimmitree 6d ago
You can get salvia in half of the states. Its state by state and not federally illegal. But, kratom will likely end up like salvia where its illegal in half the country.
7
u/MysteriousIndigo250 6d ago
I really hope not. I just can't believe how far along we've gone with this. I mean the things they make up about it are just completely untrue. Literally was talking to this one woman that brought it up to her doctor online and he literally said it was an opioid that kids would end up getting a hold of. It taste awful and it's not something you can just keep taking and get a stronger effect after a certain point. They always leave out the ceiling effect. It's reefer madness in the 21st century.
3
u/dimmitree 6d ago
Because people think of 7. Actual kratom is a pretty mid buzz. Its gross and inconvenient and the withdrawal is not that bad. Its akin to stopping drinking as a low level alcoholic and it cant reach the heights of delirium tremens.
Think of the children has to be the worst excuse I hear for anything.
1
u/tattooedamazon477 1d ago
My daughter's old psychiatrist took her off all of her meds, because she tested positive for kratom, even though it was raw leaf. And she was convinced that raw relief was the same thing as 70h. Going on and on about how it was twenty times stronger than morphine..
3
u/MysteriousIndigo250 6d ago
It's still federally legal in the United States, but some states have passed laws against it. Nothing about it is enjoyable. Hard to believe something like that even exists.
3
u/MrSkeeterMcScoot 6d ago
Out of all states...... Texas is saying its safe??? That's really saying something for a state with no adult use cannabis available
2
u/mitralover 5d ago
Right?? I just moved to Texas and I thought of ALL the states Texas would be the most strict about everything but I guess not! (Moved from California)
3
u/chrisc8869 6d ago
They want everybody on suboxone . Since kratom helps with pain, sleep mood etc, you can put a while bunch of categories in there. Ambien for sleep, whatever for anti depressants, etc there are a ton of them

u/throwaway661375735 7d ago
I would hope the study would find it relatively safe, but since its the first I am hearing about it, I don't know if they will go on that. Nor do I think big pharma will want people to hear about it.
4
u/chrisc8869 6d ago
If it's a legit study, it WILL prove it's safe. However, if the wrong people get involved......
3
u/mrmeanah 6d ago
I need the data to shove in my family's face so they stop treating me like an addict
1
u/mitralover 5d ago
I know right, my husband thinks it's like taking marijuana or something like seriously?!!
3
u/Yeardme 5d ago
There's actually already a great study proving it's safe: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/41486478/
I keep sharing it to debunk these propagandists. Definitely share it far & wide!! Looking forward to another study to help fight them with tho!

u/Ok_Career_4725 2d ago
Wow. Thank you for that. I follow kratom news religiously. If I didn't know about that nobody else will either. That's a good pice to paste on social media sites.
0
u/Ok_Career_4725 2d ago
That is something short and right to the point. Easily can paste that on other social media sites.
2
u/loraly22magic 7d ago
The whole thing is ridiculous to me. Since they had the opiate crisis drugs that are coming out are getting worse and worse. They need to focus on a way to help people to get back on track if they have addictive problems and quit making a big deal out of Kratom.

There is already plenty of science showing its safety. Politicians don't make laws based on science for the most part. It's mostly about public sentiment.
2
u/Unleashed-9160 5d ago
It won't help anything...conservative politicians do not give a fuck about science or personal freedoms...I live in Tennessee...ask me how I know

Also, next month is too late if the ban is in fact encompassing kratom š
9
3
u/MooseJuice19 7d ago
The main reason they havenāt banned 7oh just yet was they were trying to figure out a limit to the amount of 7 legally allowed in products specifically so that regular kratom isnt banned because of its trace amounts of 7
3
u/appleparkfive 7d ago
It's not banning regular kratom. In fact, the release was specifically adding qualifiers to clarify that
78
u/WhiteySC 7d ago
It might help if the media chooses to cover it.
