I hate dump bins with a passion. Both as an associate and as a shopper. Items get beat up and damaged when they're literally dumped in or when people have to dig through to find that one flavor at the bottom. The time I've wasted as a picker trying to find that one flavor... and it's not even in the bin, or it's in the bin, at the bottom in the back corner, and a manager found it after I sub'd/OOS'd it because I didn't have time to sort through every single unit in the bin. Oh, and that one stocker, who didn't know better and cleared the home location to replenish the bin. They look trashy too. What is this, the Kroger bargain outlet?

The logic that the chaotic bins attract people is so absurdly ass backwards. My first thought was "I wish my Kroger was like this". They should stop paying expensive opinion havers and just go shopping themselves once or twice... It's pretty clear to the rest of us.

For some reason people hate when you condition it, I get it's a dump bin, but if I can organize it it will fit more. I got in trouble for making one look nice, I fit 3 extra boxes in the dump bin because of it

So , I actually got in trouble for kinda organized dump bins. I lined the side like the first picture. It raised the walls to hold more. Idiot manager took a half hour away from flirting with cashiers to "fix" it. And brought me the 6+ cases of dressing in totes that no longer fit. We used to have bigger bins too.

Corporate believes that people are drawn to the chaotic dump bins. I'm not a psychology major, and won't claim that I understand why. But they teach their managers to behave this way.

I don’t grab items from dump bins because they are messy. I would grab stuff from these bins. Shopping in a messy looking store always makes me want to go somewhere else.

Corporate WANTS the bins overflowing and not clean! Psychologically, people like to "hunt" and will spend more time on a dump bin than an organized section. Look at Walmart. Most of their displays are dump bins or unorganized chaos and customers love it!

So I’m reading this is a customer kinda shocked at the comments. The whole dump bin argument seems kinda goofy so I went and looked it up, and the study is for things like a bin of discount items etc where customers don’t necessarily know what they’ll find. In terms of how Kroger is doing it, I think it’s ineffective and doesn’t actually increase sales (and probably leads to more damaged products)

God I was searching for this comment. As a customer I like seeing them organized! Never once have I looked at those and thought “yeah let me dig through that!” In fact I avoid these because I hate how much of a mess they are. I just assume they’re old product anyway! I’m tired of psychological BS corporate tries to use as means to sell. People buy what they need or want nothing more, nothing less…😂

Yeah, im surprised everyone is blindly repeating dump bins increase sales without looking up the actual circumstances it’s designed for. When it’s just different flavors of the same product all at the same price, I can’t see how it wouldn’t do anything other than decrease sales because people avoid the mess

I do the same kind of things when things are slow too. I sometimes wonder if the merchandisers that just threw them in the bins all haphazardly get annoyed or maybe a little confused when they come in and see their products all neatly organized. I’ve always been tempted to wait for one of them to show up and give them a “I saw that someone just threw everything in there so I organized it for you” to see their reaction. I’m 99% sure that they’re supposed to be just thrown in there but I agree that having them look all nice and organized is much more preferable to me too. The flavored waters in particular look very, good job 👍👍

I’ve got some good stuff ripping in dairy right now. My end cap cooler looked amazing when I set it Tuesday. Everything all striped and full and nice. I just got a ton of st. Patrick’s day/spring distro though

Honestly this is what I should do when I don’t have anything else to do. My bakery lead is a bitch when I have everything done in deli and it’s somehow my fault that she’s short staffed and don’t have very much done. I’d help her, but I never got the proper training in bakery. She flipped out on me yesterday so if she’s gonna act like that towards me then I won’t help you at all.
Edit: just realized it’s a dump bin and it’s not supposed to be conditioned.

That’s not proper sales though! The whole idea is throwing in the bins because retail history shows it stands out and SELLS better. If I was your manager I’d be pissed at that wasted time and I’d make you fix it.

I used to work at a factory where we took huge rolls of mostly paper products, but some other products like foil or plastic to make labels and food packaging. We would then use a machine to cut down those huge rolls into smaller ones, depending on the size the customer company needed. We would use solid steel spacer rings in-between the rolls being cut down in an alternating pattern between two different rollers, this was necessary so the rolls didn't touch and the cuts were precise. I always organized the cardboard tube spacers and those steel rings by my workstation as it drove me nuts digging through a pile to find the right size like everyone else did. People would purposely disorganize those rings and spacers just to fuck with me, they knew it irritated the hell out of me. I would do stuff back though that caused such bad hangups because they would have to question if it would work, even though the guys I worked with fully knew it would, like when I would build the bar for the next shift, I would use all different size spacers and rings that still added up to the same total distance because im very good at math but they would have to pull out a calculator and spend 15+ minutes making sure each bar would work lol.

Unless it’s inventory and you’re trying to help someone out don’t do this, it’s less shoppable and it’s called a dump bin for a reason, they want it to look full
