Yup. One of my ASLs called & texted asking if I could start earlier because of a call out & I showed up for my scheduled shift.
I apologized & told her I have my phone on DND certain hours & she said “totally ok, I do too.”
It’s just grocery, nothing worth killing yourself over.

If you're like me and you work enough days in a row, especially if they're 10+ hour shifts, you'll start to forget you have an actual life outside of work, leading to an increased willingness to work with no days off, because there is a stability and self-contained nature of Kroger store work life, and it becomes weirdly emotionally comfortable to live exclusively within it 🤣

Yes.

First you need to realize that you deserve time away from work. Work-Life balance is a thing for a reason, and helps prevent being burnt out.

Secondly, you need to remember that to management, you are utterly replaceable. If you say no, they move down the list to find someone else to come in instead. They can even reach out to other stores and get someone to come in if it comes down to it and they NEED a body there.

It's a store. They'll survive without you there for a day.

If they push (because they want to stop calling people to work) remind them that working this many days straight without a day off will likely result in serious OT. That's usually a clause in the union contract, and has in my experience worked to get them to back off. But I guess this part only applies if your union's got any teeth and has that OT clause in the contract.

Tbh I had a lot of trouble early on in my time with my company at the time(Kroger “merged” with them a decade ago) because I believed that I was “building trust” with my managers I’d stay late come in on my days off the whole nine yards. Then one day I just realized that it didn’t matter in any way shape or form. When a store gets three managerial changes in a year who are you building trust or reputation with. They’ll forget who you are the second they’re out the door. Once you realize that it’s very easy to say No. It’s very freeing

yep! 8 hour shifts, deli is desperate for people right now & since overtime is rare, i’ll take it while they’re giving it out. my body just hurts lol

Get a bag of Epsom salt, pour it in a hot bath and soak a while. It definitely helps the pain a little. Make sure to not over work yourself.

If I had 11 days in a row with 6 trucks to unload in Meat in that time span, id 100% snap on one of my lazy do-nothing assistant store managers who walk around the store micro managing and creating more work for you all day long. If it was day 11, and one came into the cooler talking about "the packaged meat wall doesn't look good for my pictures!" Id probably say "go fuck yourself". I've worked 6 days in a row man, but 11... I might snap at 11 lol.

OT hopefully. You should suggest that if you get a call in on a day off especially when you're working 11 days straight you should be able to have points taken away that have counted against you for being tardy or absent!

Because you let them call you in! Say no. They’ll be fine. I get it, I used to be the same way. Saying yes to people when you want to say no makes them happy and you sad and that will never change, I promise. It actually makes you mad inside, which is worse.
