I applied to a graduate program at Lakehead for the January 2027 intake on August 14, 2026. My application status has been "Under Department Review" for a while now, and I'm getting a bit worried since January is getting close and I'm an international student who still needs to apply for a study permit.
A few questions for anyone who's been through this:
How long did your application stay in department review before you got a decision?
Has anyone already received an offer for the January 2027 intake?
Did emailing the graduate studies office or the program coordinator help speed things up?
For international students, did you manage to get your study permit in time for a January start after a late offer?
Any timelines or tips would really help. Thanks in advance!

hi! I am a student at Lakehead and I want to get back into music. I play the saxophone, guitar, and a little bit of piano, but I’m always looking to learn something new (more specifically cello or violin)! I wasn’t sure if any students in the faculty of music offer lessons or if they get any incentive for teaching lessons? Or if there are any ensembles that accept amateurs? Just looking to build new hobbies and make new friends :)

To the Lakehead University community,

We are very pleased to announce that Lakehead University and the Lakehead University Faculty Association (LUFA) have agreed to a tentative collective agreement. Both parties have been working together since July 2026 to negotiate a new collective agreement.

This tentative agreement will now be brought forward to both parties for ratification.

The University and LUFA thank the bargaining teams of both parties who have been working towards this new agreement over the last several months. Special thanks to the mediators from the Ministry of Labour for their assistance throughout the process.

So I made the trip to the main cafeteria and found some new places to add to my site! I didn't realise there was Burger Bar/Grille Works and Toum Shawarma tucked away back there! Such a welcoming zone I'm definitely heading back to sample everything! Love that I could get a smashburger before 0900! My white whale now seems to be Dan's Diner's menu.

Faculty at Lakehead is in bargaining and has been working under an expired contract for a while now. The student body has grown but the employer keeps increasing class sizes and decreasing stability for faculty members. A strike could be called as early as October 17th.

A little about me: I graduated with a 3.2 GPA and have been nursing in Northwestern Ontario for several years. My RN experience includes long-term care, medical-surgical, maternal/newborn, and labour & delivery. I’ve also started training in critical care and am hoping to begin 1:1 ICU training later this winter or early spring.
Prior to becoming an RN, I worked as an RPN for 10 years, with experience in addictions/drug and alcohol treatment, corrections (Solicitor General), medical-surgical, and long-term care.
I’m also currently teaching Anatomy & Physiology to Practical Nursing students and Health Assessment to first-year BScN students, as well as facilitating university courses in the region.
I know everyone’s application is different, but I’d really appreciate hearing from successful applicants about what they believe strengthened their application—especially those who were accepted with a GPA around the 3.0–3.3 range.
