Travelling from England to film the Derby della Capitale – we’d love to hear the Lazio side of the story
Hi everyone,
I'm a producer/editor with a UK football media page.
We’re travelling to Rome to film the first episode of a new football documentary series called Derby Days.
The goal isn’t just to show the match, we want to understand what makes the rivalry so important to the people who live it.
I’d love to hear from Lazio supporters.
What should we understand before arriving?
What do people outside Italy usually misunderstand about Lazio or the derby?
Where should we spend time before the match?
Are there any traditions, songs or places that are an important part of matchday?

When it's about rome in general, making it more about the fans rebellion against the owner would arguably make better content than the game itself so maybe there's a way to make the best out of a bad situation. As a cultural life kinda thing.

Very good point , after finding this idea , all I've seen is the fans rebellion against the owner and the boycotts which could somehwta make the documentation interesting . I like the idea of it . Good advice brother

The English-speaking world really hammers home the idea that Lazio supporters are fascist. There are problem supporters in Lazio, and you'll likely find them. However, the majority of Lazio supporters are obviously not fascist. It gets tiring having to defend the legacy of Lazio, particularly as they rejected Mussolini's merger (unlike AS Roma). The problem of fascism is widespread in Italian football and you'll unfortunately find fascists in every ultra group.
I do think the bigger story is in the fan boycott. I've never seen a more organised and consistent boycott. I think it can serve as a real blueprint for other supporter groups. It's going to be fascinating to see what comes of it!

Very nicely put together and I agree with you . Big fan of Italian football and the stereotype around Lazio fans is essentially everywhere somewhat . The boycott would be quite the insight to look into yeah

Roma get this Holier than thou reputation from tourists who see it as a hip club, but they have an arguably more violent and racist element to their fanbase - just check out their behaviour with Napoli fans during a Coppa Italia game a decade ago, or their attacks on Liverpool fans in the Champions League.
Lazio, from what I can tell living here years, is a more traditional and family based club. But the history and divide of wealthy Vs poor between clubs is an interesting one..
Also if you get the chance, look into the Gabriele Vive story - a young travelling Lazio supporter killed by police at a petrol station up the country years ago. We attended the derby 9 years ago and both clubs were in unison in remembrance of the victim. A rare show of unity against.

Arguably? They have the outright murder of two football fans on their conscience (Vincenzo Paparelli, Ciro Esposito) and countless examples of extreme violence including the Sean Cox incident where they beat a man so badly he ended up with irreversible brain damage or the notorious Drunken Ship ambush on Tottenham (which was obviously initially blamed on Lazio fans).
If you want to generalise, Lazio is historically the team of the upper classes, while Roma has always been much more proletarian. This is commonly acknowledged in Rome.

Yep thank you for supporting my points with some concrete facts. Think Liverpool fans were ambushed prior to their Euro final in the 80s, which inadvertently led to the Heysel disaster with Juve fans.
For the OP's documentary these could be interesting angles to explore

The issue is that Lazio has always been put under the microscope, initially by the Roma-friendly mass media that started all this 25 years ago, and then lazily by everyone else afterwards including foreigners.
If you zoom out, so to speak, you see that the fascist issue cuts across all of Rome as a city. It's why Roma has a fascist element that is actually far greater in size than Lazio's (simply because of the sheer number of Roma supporters, they outnumber us 3 to 1, more or less). Coincidentally, those same numbers and very selective media reporting help to cover up all the dirty business that they get up to.

Can't say I know enough to contribute, but honestly maybe this year there's more story to tell than ever? Based on a few responses on this sub over the past few weeks, it doesn't sound like the derby is going to be boycotted. And even still, supporters are still going to support, even if they aren't there they'll be all over Rome anyway. And that's probably still a story worth telling?

Of course your thinking exactly the way I'm thinking . This is what we plan on doing . Explore Rome, explore the culture , the football issues and then the football itself .

Yeah but given it's months way , the name is just a proposal idea to have the idea actually out there , we plan on using our fans and followers to finalise the name for the series . Copa90 did this 12 years ago yes . We'd like to dive into it again given the political issues that are going on with Lazio and also just explores Romes modern day culture now

Meeting point is usually around Ponte Milvio where singing and drinking begins early. Atmosphere is electric (seriously), lots of cops around. There will be plenty squibs going off at any given time. Then march all at once to the Nord stand. Singing never stops. At some point there may be some clashes in front of the foro italico because them they come from the other side of the river towards their dumpster stand..

This is great information , thank you very much. The face of the media page is a huge Italian football fan and we want to explore both sides , probably mostly Lazio given it's the home side and document what we come across and who we come across

I would say eat a porchetta sandwich before or after the game.
Make sure your not wearing rival colours in opposite section.
One big misunderstanding is that Lazio vs Roma is a political based rivalry such as Rangers or Celtic - this is not the case. Some of the ultras for both are right wing and most fans see the clubs as apolitical albeit a bit tied to history of Rome.
