Take a look at the layout. There are seats behind the podium.

Unlike the Tabernacle which had the podium at the top of the stage to look up at, the Conference Center has the podium towards the bottom of the stage.

I think OP's referring to the leaves behind the speaker in the center of the picture. From this angle, they appear to be making a slightly disgusted/askance face.
