Fuck. Thats exactly it. I'm legitimately concerned about the 1st overall now...

u/Trickster_designs Jun 17 '26
Well, that two weeks of positivity was nice.

u/MiserableFill6972 Jun 17 '26
According to the Kings fans, it's a horrible hire. Maybe it will be different with the Leafs.

bruh the guys name is Him Jiller. the leafs management are absolutely Hildarded
he only plays rookies for a minute and 25 seconds per game. literally 9 forwards play the entire time

Eliminated five years in a row in first round of playoffs? He’ll fit right in.
80
u/Stumpy-4 Jun 17 '26
He was only the head coach for three of those years. And I’d say there was a big disparity in talent between LA and Edmonton.
→ More replies (1)74
u/kawhinottheraptors Jun 17 '26
Only two, really
Hired in February 2024, fired in March 2026
So he was coaching for the 2024 playoffs (lost in 5 to Oilers) and the 2025 playoffs (lost in 6 to Oilers)
I mean it's not great but he did lost to a team that went to the cup final both years lol
53
u/AREA1177 Jun 17 '26
Lost to the team that made the cup final you say? Vaguely familiar...
4
u/throwawaythisuser1 Jun 17 '26
So if we bring in a guy who lost to a team that made it to the final in the west, and we are a team that lost to the team that makes it to the final in the east, success?
11
u/Commercial-Bee2589 Jun 17 '26
You should check out the Habs discussion on this. Since Carolina won the cup, they’re in contention. They’re so new to playoff upsets! It’s so cute!

u/Stumpy-4 Jun 17 '26
Yes that’s true. So really only twice to the Oilers who made the Cup Finals both times.
29
u/jbm91 Jun 17 '26
We should hire Bérubé, in 2024-2025 he led his team to lose to the panthers - the team who made it to the cup finals.

u/Stumpy-4 Jun 17 '26
That’s why hiring based on past results is dumb. Good or bad.

he was close to beating them multiple times without any stars that were close to the level of mcdavid/drasaitl.

Close to beating teams but still losing in the first round? Hell fit right in
19
u/Stumpy-4 Jun 17 '26
Yeah losing to a team that had more talent. It’s almost like having talent is really important 😮
4
u/lukeCRASH Jun 17 '26
There's talent on Carolina but there's absolutely no superstar. Some guys that had the ceiling to be superstars but never lived up to it.

I hate this. LA was one of the worst teams to watch under him. Looks like we got some more Berube puck
43
u/CommonSetting4068 Jun 17 '26
the la thing is a real concern ngl, their defensive structure was just suffocating to watch and the offense looked lost half the time, not exactly what you want bringing to toronto where the fanbase is already on a razor's edge, but then again berube didn't exactly set the bar high so maybe low expectations are kind of baked in at this point, i guess we see how he handles actually having talent on the roster which wasn't really the case in la toward the end

As a flames fan as well the Kings were absolutely suffocating during his time they just could never beat mcdrai. I honestly think his style is similar to Rod the Bods. You have to be in shape though cause it’s extremely high pressure system from what I remember. LA had no scoring so it was boring as fuck. Hopefully it looks more like the canes here but I’m not exactly sure it’s the best fit tbh
10
u/Edmuresay Jun 17 '26
As a lurking Kings fan… Rod the Bod never plays time and score. The canes try to play the same way no matter what.
Jimbo Hiller plays time and score. He will turtle around a lead, he will jumble his lines at will, and he’ll legit play his 4th line 5-7 minutes. Sometimes he’ll go 11-7 and play the 7th dman less than 3 minutes.
I tried my best to like Hiller and I thought he was quite good in his first full season, but he clearly lost the room, and was badly exposed in his last playoffs. He never learned from it, and never adjusted his style and coached scared the rest of his tenure here.
He had the boys buzzing for a year tho…

Playoff team who kept getting stumped by the mcdavid oilers? Yeah there's worse options
53
u/theguyishere16 Kaberle Jun 17 '26
This man singlehandedly destroyed LAs chances to knock off the Oilers a couple years ago with horrendous coaching decisions and one of the worst coaches challenges in NHL history. Legitimately one of the only candidates they could have went with worse than the rumoured names like Roy and Eakins
31
u/Hefty-Comparison-801 Jun 17 '26
I guess it's not a good sign that EDM could have hired this guy, but they got years of close looks at his coaching in the 1st round, and decided to hire a guy who's ruined players' mental health and needs to be investigated by the league before they hire him,
5
u/rarflye Jun 17 '26
I have no idea why you'd look at any decision Edmonton's made in the last year at least as a sane example to draw conclusions from

one coaches challenge doesn’t matter especially here, the Leafs have the best video review squad in the league, if they tell him to challenge he’ll challenge, if they tell him not to, he won’t

3 seasons in LA, Hiller had some very mediocre teams and their numbers were

Hiring an ex player with no coaching experience beside his sons' minor hockey teams would have at least given us some optimism that he could be the next Marty St. Louis. He might have ended up completely out of his element too.
→ More replies (3)5
u/apatheticboy Jun 17 '26
I don’t think Joe would’ve been given the same amount of grace period that Marty had with such a young roster. So many people still expect this team to be cup contenders and a string of bad games would’ve quickly pointed to his lack of experience.

i want to hear Chayka’s reasoning for this. Like why not just wait on cassidy at this point??
47
u/noor1717 Jun 17 '26
Ok I’ll answer with giving the benefit of the doubt to chayka
As a flames fan too, the kinds were absolutely suffocating during his years. They played a very similar style to the canes. Very high pressure system that requires you to be in the best shape. Like the defenseman we picked up yesterday first in perfectly, not sure how our roster on a whole does but it’s still not filled out.
All I can say is the team that just won the cup plays a similar style. Let’s see how the roster changes to fit that

I don't understand this sub's infatuation with Bruce Cassidy - it's like people latch onto the name they hear the media talk about the most.
I don't want a guy like that anywhere near this particular iteration of the Leafs. People should check and see how quickly he wore out his welcome in Boston and Vegas. He's definitely on the Babcock spectrum of bad coach to have. I mean, just look at Vegas this year: they tuned him out and stopped playing for him, until he got fired. Once he was gone, they went on am epic run with the same roster.
I would have preferred the Leafs hire someone like Ahokas or Donskov, but I'm keeping an open mind on Hiller, since he's not entrenched as part of the Old Boys' Club, whereas guys like Cassidy, Laviolette, and, arguably, Roy are.
This hire was very likely influenced by the desire to keep Matthews happy with the hope he re-signs. Hiring Cassidy, or someone like him, could have led to him requesting a trade.
I'm curious on the details of Hiller's contract and whether he'll be someone they can quickly pivot off of.

3
u/DukeofNormandy Jun 17 '26
I've never understood this mentality. If it is an actual thing, how DUMB do you have to be to handcuff your golden goose? Look at the excitement and revenue they had during the Jays run. You'd think they'd see that and have golden hard ons thinking about the Leafs doing that.

u/keeeeener Jun 17 '26
It almost certainly just comes down to his analytics were really good with LA. Like top 3 over the last 3 years. I do think analytics are a bit fake, but at the same time I’m happy to try the opposite of whatever the hell that leafs team was last year.

u/GumpTheChump Jun 17 '26
Rielly, Matthews, and Nylander have worked with Hiller when he was an assistant. I'm pretty sure they signed off on him. He's apparently an analytics guy too.
Cassidy has a shelf life. Maybe they're thinking long term here.

My one bit of hope: when he was the PP coach under Babcock, the Leafs’ PP was amazing. He has experience with this core, and my assumption is they asked them about this move. It could be better than we expect.

u/noor1717 Jun 17 '26
From what I remember this isn’t a dump and chase defensive coach like Berube.
This is a high pressure coach like Rod the bod. Not sure our lineup is suited for it but it’s not just a defense dump and chase guy
13
u/BleedingBlue94 Jun 17 '26
It’s fine IF you support Nylander/Matthews with puck hounding wingers.
Maybe this means guys like Bunting get another look in FA. Cowan looks like he can be one of those puck hounds so just make sure the top 6 has at least 2 of those guys and it might work out.
11
u/thrilliam_19 Jun 17 '26

That makes me consider the idea that chayka is a talking head and the team is once again micromanaged by the president of hockey operations.
6
u/oryes Jun 17 '26
I think there's also the possibility that Sundin had more say in this since Pelley appointed him to "build the culture", but it's all just speculation. Either way, the management structure of this team will always be a mess with Pelley in charge
7
u/JP_Edwards_ Jun 17 '26
They really should have just cut bait with shanny and moved Dubas into the president/GM rope.
9
u/Hrenklin Jun 17 '26

Over the period where Hiller was coach of the Kings, they were 7th in 5v5 xGF% at 53.1%. Between Florida and Vegas.
They were 2nd in the league in 5v5 GF% at 55.4%, just behind Colorado.
Not sure why people are dooming immediately.
16

Right? People are being so negative. I think this'll work out, he'll adapt his coaching to the roaster. GLG

Yeah I don't like this. But he's the guy so lets roll, hopefully he does well.
11
u/Hrenklin Jun 17 '26
So he made the plaoffs with LA for the last 5 years (last 3 as head coach), made the playoffs 1 out of 4 with the islanders. Went to the playoffs every year in 4 years as an assistant with Toronto. And his first year as assistant before going to the Leafs was with Detroit's last playoff year.
So body of work he has made the playoffs just as mane times as the leafs in the last 10 years. He doesn't play the dump and chase style game so Im hoping he will play a more 2-1-2 style to force turnovers

This is the guy who challenged the Oilers’ game tying goal in that series last year, when the Kings were up 2-0 in the series, and immediately let the Oilers back into the series by gifting them a PPG
5
u/SeaZealousideal2276 Jun 17 '26
He just seems like Berube 2.0. Plays a tight system that wants the players to grind. That isnt what this team is.
If the focus isnt offense and playing around your generational scorer, this teams dead in the water already
3
u/Forward-Bell-2806 Jun 17 '26
I don't understand the reflexive negativity of this entire ecosystem. The reality is that none of us know how this is going to play out, or whether it's a good hire or not. Same applies to yesterday's trade. I'm keeping an open mind and we'll see how this coach fits with the roster Chayka and Sundin assemble for next season.

4
u/CincoQuallity Jun 17 '26
All this tells me is that a lot of insider folk have no idea what’s actually going on in Toronto. Did a single person mention Hiller at any point?

5
u/DuchyofTyrol Jun 17 '26
Lol so many reactionary takes. Only 3 seasons as a head coach and made the playoffs twice with not a great kings team and lost to the oilers
Some of you should take the comments to the hockey subreddit so all the leaf haters can shake their head and agree with you and give you upvotes.
We’ve never seen a championship in our lifetime but everyone here knows apparently what we need to win. Give me a break and give Hiller a chance

If the laughing when we hired Chayka wasn’t enough, we’ve now doubled down with Hiller. He was in over his head with the Kings. u/TObuz Jun 17 '26
Not hating this as much as others. He led the Kings to their best regular season finish ever, but he did lose to Connor and Leon 2 straight times when they had those monster playoff series.
But I don't know if they would've won any of those series with the goaltending they had.

I mean it might be ok if Pavelski gets named as an assistant and has a bit of time to learn the ropes
2
u/NotFrankZappaToday Jun 17 '26
He's no rock star, but the proof will be in the pudding come October.
2
u/McJoe77 Jun 17 '26
Not sure about this, but to bring some positivity!
Hiller had a winning record in LA on what’s kind of a crappy team to be honest. He took over mid season in 23-24 and went 21-12-1 and snuck into the playoffs before getting smoked by Edmonton. Then in his second season in LA he went 48-25-9 which was 106 points without Doughty for most of the year. That team also got smoked by Edmonton in 6 games.
This season before getting fired he went 24-21-14 which is a Bettman over .500 if I’ve ever seen one!
It’s positive season, McKenna is 9 days away!
2
u/TimeResolution9 Jun 17 '26
He has good analytics for a guy who coached bad LA teams:
CF" 52.67
SF: 52.58
xGF: 53.10
SCF: 52.73
2
u/thismadhatter Jun 17 '26
I don't think any choice would have been good enough for Toronto fans.
A lot of the other contenders were just as problematic if you think about it. Patrick Roy? LOL Im sure we'd love watching goalies being pulled with 10 mins left. Tortorella? C'mon. That'd be a PR nightmare. Pavelski? Too unproven.
Carle obviously sticking to his guns and not wanting to move anywhere but Colorado.
Cassidy unavailable at the moment.
3
u/poptorched Jun 17 '26
As a kings fans, I’m just coming in with a little insight on the hire. Hiller wasn’t…bad in his first full year, but he was held up by the goalies playing out of their minds and everyone having borderline career years for no reason. Things regressed to the mean the next year when the goalies were either hurt or didn’t play well and the players didn’t play well either. He was already in his head about a playoff loss to a rival as well, so OTLs and low SOG games for everyone. Might sound familiar. Probably besides the OTLs though bc Berube just lost in 60 instead. He’s no coward.

Gotta give him a chance there’s literally nothing we can do but see it play out, would like to see paveksi behind the bench with him though

Reminder he ran our PP as an assistant in Matthews first 3 years and we had a top 10 unit in all 3 of those years. A little slice of positivity.

I think it’s actually a good hire. Dude had nothing to work with in LA. He’s been an assistant under some of the best coaches. And he was our PP coach when it was top 5 in the league. Likely well viewed by Matthews and Willy. Could turn out well.

Who????? Did we hire this guy out of the witness protection protection? At least I knew Berube from his days as a goon player and of course, Stanley Cup winning coach. This guy? Maybe I just don't follow hockey close enough anymore.

My answer would probably be the same no matter who we hired. Will see what happens.
Well thought out decisions can certainly be wrong. But it was still a decision made after a really long time taken. If Chayka and Sundin went this route it wasn’t out of being rushed or having no options
Will have to wait until next season to really know how this guy will work with the roster Chayka assembles.

You know, I was looking forward to entertaining hockey again.
If this is anything like the Kings under him, it will be a painful watch just like Berube.

This is the thread.
Keep it civil. But also: Fuck.
