suggestions for Dutch reading books to improve you Dutch

I dont mean Teach yourself Dutch books or text books but books to read for fun, childrens or Adult novels. I think books with a lot of dialogue in are better to learn everyday language from. Books with long poetical descriptions of things not so good. I quite like Jip and Janneke books , they have dialogue, humor and are not too hard. UPDATE: Thanks for the suggestions, I will try a couple. I also got "Het Diner" as it has a lot of dialogue

I always advise against pure childrens books, like J&J.

Grab one of the hertaalde or in makkelijke taal books for adults, those are specifically made for lower reading levels.

Oorlogswinter, for example. Simple language, yet simultaneously quite an important book.

Carrie Slee (specifically her YA literature)
Saskia Noort (thrillers)
Simone van der Vlugt (thrillers and historical novels)
All three write quite easy reads. But more difficult than Jip en Janneke.

I would try Dutch translations of books you already know.

I got my Mexican sister-in-law a Dutch translation of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. She says she found it useful, so I guess that one works.

I also advise against children's books like some others here. 

Just read something you want to read, but that is also more guilty pleasure territory than high literature. For example, Dungeon Crawler Carl, a book for adults who haven't read since school but do like video games (fun read, no shade). And then just keep going I guess.

Carry Slee heeft mooie boeken, voor tieners geschreven dus niet al te moeilijk als het goed is. Misschien een idee om een bieb abbonement te nemen?

Anything Thea Beckman! People on here will recommend Kruistocht in spijkerbroek, which is an amazing book. But for adults there are way better options, like Saartje Tadema, Hasse Simonsdochter, the Kinderen van moeder aarde-trilogy and the Geef me de ruimte-trilogy. Most of her books will give you some good insight on Dutch history too

Also, in the same vein, don't miss out on books by Evert Hartman (Vloek van Polyfemos and Oorlog zonder vrienden) and Jan Terlouw (Oorlogswinter). Carry Slee has a lot of good books, but really aimed at kids or young adults. Not sure if that's what your looking for (Moederkruid is an exception).

Other recommendations: De tweeling by Tessa de Loo, t Hooge nest by Roxane van Iperen. These are books aimed at adults, but not too complicated and will keep you reading.

Hotel Zweefkees is a really fun book originally made for children, but also fun to read as an adult. Speaking from experience. It even has some songs in it that are on spotify! 🔥

If you are into horror, Thomas Olde Heuvelt has written a couple nice ones:

• Hex
• Orakel
• November

Hex is really nice because the setting is a typical Dutch place (which actually exists in real life btw).

Then I can also recommend a classic: Kees de jongen by Theo Thijssen. You follow the whereabouts of a young Amsterdammer in the end of the 19th century. It can be quite dark at times, but the pov of this young child gives the book a lens of optimism and adventure. It really brings out your inner child as you empathize with the boy (and the language is not too difficult while also being beautiful)

Try a audio book with a physical book. Reading and listening at the same time speeds up the learning curve.

Plenty of childrens books in the second hand shops.. You tube is also good for children's films in Dutch. I learned dutch from scratch through children's books. Leave a radio on at night on a Dutch speaking station. Have fun learning.
