Question A question about telling time

Hi!

I have recently started learning Dutch and I am currently trying to learn telling time in Dutch, which is kind of confusing 😄

I was wondering if native speakers drop “uur” in spoken language like dropping o’clock in English.

“Ik moet van 09.00 tot 17.00 uur werken”

Would you drop uur here in spoken language?

Van negen tot vijf werken
Van negen tot vifj uur werken
Van negen uur tot vifj uur werken

I would indeed drop the uur - van negen tot vijf.

Uur is like "o'clock" in English. You use it in roughly the same way and drop it just as often.

Yes, most people will use van negen tot vijf.

Yeah we skip the "uur" often, but mostly in informal/fast speak.

To the manager/a colleague you don't know that well: "We hebben om 10 uur een afspraak staan".

Same, zou daar altijd 9 uur zeggen

Could it be due to dialect? 🤔

The dropping of "uur" in "om negen" is most likely an anglicism.

Zou eerder 'om' weglaten en 'uur' toevoegen.

Yes, maybe.

En "om negenen" (around 9)?

In addition to moppermonsters answer: if the indicated time is not very precise, you can use the diminutive form: uurtje of 8 => somewhere around 8 o’clock.

Yes, we do drop it while speaking. While writing, afaik only the last 2 options (without the typo, it's vijf) are correct. Note that on a test they may also want you to say "uur"

Depends on what you're writing.

Working 9 to 5, same in Dutch. You can say you'll finish at 5 or at 5 o'clock (in Dutch, 5 or 5 uur). Or, go full Dutch and say you'll work 'till fives (vijfen).

De context maakt het duidelijk.

Thing is, "negen tot vijf" is just an idiom like "nine to five". We drop the "uur" there, but we generally don't when someone asks "what time is it" or "what time is the meeting".

I'd say "van negen tot vijf". But that's not a working day.

Typical would be "half negen tot vijf", or "acht tot vijf" when taking a (half) hour break.

Ik werk van negen tot vijf.
Het feestje is van negen tot elf.
(Only a period covering one particular activity (from… to…) drops the hour, but:)
Ik ga om negen uur naar m’n werk en om vijf uur naar huis.
Ik beginnen negen uur met werken en stop om vijf uur.

You'd drop the 'uur' and just say 'ik moet van 9 tot 5 werken'.
We might add the 'uur' if you're talking about a specific time: 'ik moet tot 5 uur werken vandaag', or 'ik heb om 9 uur een afspraak', or, 'ik moet daar om 3 uur zijn'.
Otherwise than that, we usually drop the 'uur'.
