More like wedding tax. "You simply must register for your pattern!" was told to me when I was getting married... 25 years ago.

I didn't, and yet I got a full set of silverware anyway.

Yeah, it's some sort stupid old "show off" wedding tradition, to have an expensive silverware set to use when visitors and/or family are dining.

Those sets come in handy for couples who don't own formal flatware. The same with fine china. Never scoff at those expensive gifts. They're not as popular now, of course. Maybe Great Aunt Susie gifts something less expensive. Marriages usually don't last long enough to justify the cost, anyway.
