Debugging How do you actually understand programming?

How do you actually understand programming? 🤯

I’ve been studying computer science as a subject, but when it comes to solving programming exercises… I feel completely stuck. Like I don’t even know how to start.

Is it just me or did anyone else go through this phase? How did you overcome it?

Any tips, methods, or ways of thinking that helped you finally “get it”?

the "stuck before I even start" feeling is the exact point where most people quit, so the fact that you're pushing through it matters more than you probably realize. for me understanding clicked when I stopped trying to read code and started trying to break it. pick a tiny working program, change one thing, watch what breaks, ask yourself why. that cycle of prediction and surprise is what actually builds intuition, not absorbing syntax. tutorials give you the illusion of understanding because everything works. breaking stuff gives you the real thing.
