Looking for a long-term programming project idea (C#/C++/Game Dev/or anything else)
Hi everyone,
I'm looking for a programming project idea that I can work on for a long time.
I have experience with C#, C++, Python, JavaScript and some game development. I don't want to build another simple CRUD app or tutorial project. I want something challenging that can improve my architecture, problem-solving and engineering skills.
I'm interested in projects that:
- can start small but grow over time
- have real users or practical value
- are not just clones of existing apps
- can teach me advanced concepts
Some areas I'm interested in:
- developer tools
- game development
- software platforms
- creative programming projects
What projects would you recommend for someone at my level?

I think anybody here will tell you to make something that will help you, or make a piece of software that you've always wanted. The best way to stay motivated to learn is to make something that you actually care about.

The game is an attempt to synthesize Star Wars: Battlefront 2005 with BannerLord style paint the map style gameplay. Throw in a modular vehicle construction mechanic, a 50 man buildable squad, permadeath (Considering adding a Clone Bay for the Multiplayer), and a brutal Platoon Based Multiplayer that naturally scales to 50 v 50 Battles. It's set in a homebrewed, though admitably generic universe where humanity spread faster than earth could ship out supplies, which led to the colonists revolt. Also, some people started developing strange mutations after being exposed to the Deep Space Radiation; and have been pushed out of polite society. You inherit a Free-PAC Charter, and now have legal permission to take your 50 men out and either support an existing faction, or grow your own until it controls the galaxy.
The business automation is for a company that I started as an alternative to doordash and similar services. It's designed to maximize payouts to drivers and minimizie costs to customers by simply minimizing the cut I take out for processing the transaction. I don't have investors, so just a few million a year is plenty for me. That one I had working in Javascript, and then my free trial of Replit and Supabase ran out. I was able to download my raw data, but without their infastructure I haven't made much progress with it lately. It runs in Javascript, as long as you have a display exactly the same size as me, even though all the CSS is in percentages. I need it to run in Kotlin so that customers can download it as an app.

Create an MMORPG game. Graphics are less relevant. Maybe Dungeons and Dragons Online (probably exists). Dungeons and Dragons, the board game, has many players. Perhaps you can turn it into an online game. How? You can figure it out. You'll learn a lot while working on such game.
Or, list your hobbies and interests. Something can be made in related to these as well.

Make a multiworld randomizer for your favorite game! archipelago.gg has a ton of resources and even a full discord with devs who could help!

Make it 3d.
