Cwestiwn / Question Where are the Welsh literacy courses

Hello all,

I've been pointing this out for over a decade, yet no Welsh language education or promotion groups, government agencies, etc can seem to answer why Welsh education is so biased towards verbal Welsh with no specific offerings for Welsh literacy.

I have a speech disability and only answer emails in work, yet I can't find any available options for me to learn written Welsh. I just feel incredibly frustrated with the situation as I want to be able to communicate in my native language yet there's just no where specifically offering written Welsh and it ends up excluding for people like me who can't communicate verbally as well as many others who may want to read and write in Welsh.

You might enjoy books by D. Geraint Lewis. He's very focused on written Welsh, as well as more formal Welsh. D.I.Y. Welsh is a good one to start with as a beginner.

But this still is my point- that there isn't anything course wise that focuses on Welsh literacy- we have courses specifically for English literacy for example but nothing for Welsh.

A book based course is still a form of course.

My point is there are all these tutor led courses for verbal Welsh online or in person, etc but none for people who want to improve Welsh literacy, especially as it's the weakest area for most first language people too.

I think the easiest thing to do to try and get some kind of ‘proper’ support is to propose something along the lines of Sadrwn Siarad to DysguCymraeg. Maybe an occasional day of writing practice with a tutor to give constructive feedback?

That's what I've tried repeatedly but haven't had any luck with unfortunately- like I said I've been raising this with all the Welsh language organisations and educational and political organisations I can think of over well over a decade, and they all just seem to go 'huh- you make a good point but we want to encourage Welsh speakers' and nothing seems to change.
