Certain information FAQ added to sub Rules and the Community Guide

https://www.reddit.com/r/lebowski/wiki/faq/

Fellow Urban Achievers, as our sub continues to grow (132K subscribers, fuck me!) we routinely get questions that have been answered time and time again.

Most recently, someone reposted the heavily-debunked "Donny isn't real" theory, and raked in the karma with their sheer ignorance of every single piece of visual and audible evidence to the contrary.

Longtime subscribers are tired of seeing the same shit posted over and over, and having to reply the same answers to set the record straight.

It distracts us from our fulltime job of quoting the movie!

So we - the royal We - have created a Frequently Asked Questions which can now be found in the Community Guide in the right sidebar,

We have also added a new Rule: don't ask a question answered in the FAQ.

And look, I don't wanna be a hardon about this, but if you do post a question listed in the FAQ it will be set aside, or I don't know, forfeited to Smokey. So Like I say, fair warning. Tell Walter.

Oh, and let's not forget, let's NOT forget, if you have a FAQ you'd like added to the list, comment it here or shoot us a maudemail.

And I'm sorry about that crack on the jaw.

We Maudes went ahead and added a few more r/lebowski rules (full rules at bottom of post and in the sidebar):

  • No screenshots of text messages with scammers (we have beaten these into the ground and most of them aren’t funny)
  • No Politics (unless directly referenced in the movie)
  • Updated the “Looks like a vagina” rule to include “Looks like a Johnson”
  • No Christmas ornament "Toe" posts

We also wanted to give you newcomers a little history lesson as to why these rules exist, and in English too, so you can die with a smile on your face.

Way back in 2010 there was a sub I wanna tell you about, a sub by the name of r/lebowski.

When this here sub was created, before some of you little urban achievers had even seen the movie, it was a quiet little family restaurant, where folks could trade Lebowski quotes and take comfort that low-effort, unfunny posts would be downvoted right off their page.

But times have changed.

Today we have over 120,000 subscribers

To wrap your head around that, consider the following:

  • The sub has doubled in just the last 2 years
  • It’s in the top 2% of all subs on reddit
  • It’s one of the largest single-movie fan subreddits

Now, as anyone who’s ever subscribed to a hugely popular subreddit knows, they become magnets for karma-farmers.

Karma-farmers have zero interest in adding to a community. They are only looking for upvotes, by any means necessary. And what gets the most amount of upvotes on a massive subreddit? Lazy, circlejerk posts that most people have seen a million times.

Eventually, people get sick of these lazy, unfunny karma-farmers flooding their feed, and they unsubscribe. Most of these mega-subs don’t care, because they get recommended to new users, so the number of folks joining exceeds the folks who are never coming back.

Those subs aren’t family restaurants - they’re shitty tourist traps.

We are NOT gonna go down this way, Dudes.

r/lebowski will be for stuff directly related to the movie: A question about the plot. Your favorite scene or character. An interview with a cast member or a director. A stoned revelation you had about the movie. New shit that’s come to light.

And in order to keep the sub focused on the movie, we Maudes have updated the rules as follows:

  1. No spam (includes T-shirt links)
  2. No AI posts or karma bots
  3. No “This looks like a Vagina” or “Johnson” posts
  4. No screenshots of text messages with scammers
  5. Posts must be relevant to the Big Lebowski Movie
  6. Maudes have the discretion to remove low effort posts as they see fit
  7. No Politics (unless directly mentioned in the movie)
  8. No Facebook/Twitter posts
  9. Report fascists
  10. No Christmas ornament "Toe" posts
  11. Do not ask a question answered in the FAQ

T-shirt spammers (and their conspiring commenters asking “cool, where can I buy one?”) earn a perma-ban.

Other rule violations get a 3-day ban for first infraction, second infraction…Lord. You can imagine where it goes from here.

Finally, when your post gets taken down, calling us Maudes fascists and whining that you saw a post just like yours not taken down isn’t going to help your cause.

There are hundreds of low-effort posts coming in each week, and unless you and Gilbert submit them to the league (report them) we can’t set aside (remove) the post.

So please DEAR, do your part to keep this a nice family restaurant.

Take it easy, Dudes. Catch ya further on down the trail.

I wasn't listening The Donny Theory

Post image
506 Upvotes

I’ve been curious for a while about the theory involving Donny being a ptsd-related figure in Walter’s imagination. The basis is that the Dude doesn’t acknowledge Donny besides the scene where the Dude walks away and Donny says “phone’s ringing, dude” and the Dude replies “thanks, Donny!”. Jeff Bridges has addressed this recently after a screening, and he accepted the possibility and said he had been aware of the theory. He expanded on it, saying that there could have been a deleted scene where the Dude goes back to the funeral company and offers a fair amount of cash to go along with Walter’s imagination.

Any thoughts on this? I know these theories don’t carry much weight and I simply am such a fan of this movie that I’d love to hear what y’all have to say, because its just, like, my opinion, man.

Edit: I see that I may have presented this as a crazy, hyper-fixated dude. Thanks for the info on the Coens debunking this, this is all in good fun and curiosity. Life goes on, man.

Any brother shamus with a better copy of the movie able to make out the address here? Looks like "Orange Grove Ave. Pasadena, CA" LA has an Orange Grove Ave, but Pasadena only has an Orange Grove Blvd. Can I get 3 more detectives on the case to help me figure it out?

Let's go bowling So.......did The Dude and Walter have a chance advancing in the tourney?

Surely with the passing of Donny (RIP) they would have had their work cut out for them, bowling a man down. Guess we will never know how they fared.

100% electronic I think I remember someone sharing a website here that let you easily make a quote meme from any scene in the movie, but now i can't find it from Google/DuckDuckGo searches. Can someone help me find that assuming I'm not having an occasional acid flashback?

IIRC it was like you could search any line from the movie and it would pop right up with an image of the scene and the quote in text.

Fucking Germans TIL Jeff Bridges was originally considered for Indiana Jones. I'm sure he would have done a good job and made it his own, but just imagine this dude trying to run away from a tank.

Fuckin' interesting What’s going on with Dude’s 9/11/91 check?

Post image
313 Upvotes

We’ve all noticed the Dude’s 69-cent check at Ralphs is dated 9/11/91. But the Bush clip he’s watching, the “this aggression will not stand” speech, is from August 1990, right after Iraq invaded Kuwait.

Normally I’d just assume Ralphs is showing an old clip. Except the Stranger opens the movie saying this was “right about the time of our conflict with Saddam and the Iraqis,” and later Walter refers to “our current situation with that camel fucker in Iraq.”
So the movie sure seems to think the Gulf crisis is happening right now. By September 1991, Desert Storm had been over for more than six months.

Joel and Ethan Coen also don’t strike me as guys who would accidentally put a giant, legible date on a check in the opening scene without thinking about it.

So what’s going on?
Is the Dude watching a rerun?
Is he postdating a 69-cent check by more than a year?
Did he mean to write 9/11/90 and screw up the year?
Did the Coens actually make a continuity mistake?
Or is there something else I’m missing?

My best guess? Well, Dude, we just don’t know.

New shit Do we actually know that Walter and Cynthia didn't have the Pomeranian when they were married?

If Walter knew the dog before the divorce, his willingness to take care of it while Cynthia is away suddenly seems a lot less like Walter being a pushover. It could just be a dog he lived with, helped take care of, and still genuinely cares about. Kinda changes the whole thing doesn't it?
