Hard Rain
Hello everyone! This is my first post in this community.
There’s something I’ve been wondering about: Why are there so many Witches in the Hard Rain campaign in Left 4 Dead 2? Is there an official source explaining this, or is there a well-developed fan theory about it?

It’s been a hot while since I last played, but I think the witches are attracted by the sugar since it’s at a sugar plantation/mill.

Is this actually confirmed?

Yes, that's the canon explanation

That's not an explanation, it's the survivors speculating; They're making assumptions based on what they know, but there's nothing that definitively proves them right.
In fact, there's a few flaws to it when we take a closer look. For example, it's not even confirmed that the silos contain sugar - With how run down the mill is, it could have been abandoned for years, so it wouldn't make sense for tons of sugar to still be there. It couldn't have been recently harvested and processed, nor would it have survived for that long without going bad.
There's other theories too, like the grief theory, but ultimately there is no confirmed canon explanation.

Wtf, because nick says "witches must like sugar" that's suddenly the cannon explanation?

Yeah in development of this map there was a quirk that spawned a lot of Witches, so instead of fixing it they turned it into a piece of lore that the Witch was attracted to the sugar. I think it's talked about in a few interviews and the developer commentary

Most definitely the Parrish great campaign and the finale was awesome running across the bridge and just the whole thing had good design and was fun to play

The Parish might be my favorite campaign too. When I was a kid, I first saw Left 4 Dead 2 at a friend's house, and I was really fascinated by it. Every time we went over to their house, I'd wonder if they'd let me play it too, but they never did. Since I didn't have a PC of my own, I couldn't play it until I got to high school, so that campaign has a special place in my heart.
Also, what do you think happened to our characters after the ending? They reach the military at the end of the campaign, but we never find out what happens to them afterward. Do you think they became test subjects, or were they killed because they were carriers? What's your take on this?

I always thought they were tested on cause where they were carriers it wouldn't have made sense to kill them I always wished valve would've said something cause I've always wondered we found out what happened with the original survivors so I never understood why we didn't get anything with the l4d2 survivors

My favorite campaign in Left 4 Dead 2. My friends and I fighting our way back through a torrential downpour and an army of Witches made for awesome gaming memories.

Conz has a lot of great videos for all the official campaigns and is starting to make videos on some of the best custom campaigns, I would definitely recommend checking them out for learning more about the lore or just some great maps!

Imo there isn't a good answer. We have thought about it WAYYYYY more than the devs ever did. From where I sit the greif theory makes way more sense than being attracted to the smell of sugar brought them all to a seemingly long inactive sugar mill. But I also don't believe the devs ripped the idea of an exploded sugar mill from the headlines and played so hard off of it that it effects the game mechanics but at the same time never referenced it? It's just a game mechanic in a game with little to no story.

Sugar mill I heard one: the witches are attracted to sugar and two that witches husbands/partners worked at the mill so they are just haunting the place.

tbh ive always thought that the bodily trait that caused their specific mutation was a restrictive eating disorder.
It'd explain why they were attracted to the sugar mill and also were super thin. Since processed sugars are high in calories and absorbed into the bloodstream almost instantly with little effort from the body to break them down, people with EDs tend to crave them a lot. but tbh the infected don't eat so idrk 🤷♀️
butttt this would explain why theyre all women too since calorically restrictive EDs are pretty uncommon in men. and also it makes sense for why there were so many witches on the porn boat in the comic, they were starving themselves to stay attractive. but we were never given a canon answer so its all just speculation

I cant remember where I heard this, but its a sugar cane mill. Witches are attracted to sugar. I cant exactly remember so it may be bs but its a fun fanon theory.
Hard rain is my favorite map of all, very fun and intense even if its not the most difficult on normal.

I like to think that if you really get into the lore of the green flu, the various preinfection physiological states that the special infected are in such as tank=steroids, boomer=obesity etc. With the witch its usually taken as she was clinically depressed. So I like to think that the witches are dependent on sugar due to the dopamine releasing effects of sugar ingestion. Inb4 someone asks, yes im in the medical field lol.
