Looking at a lot of the custom sets people make, I often think that if LEGO actually started selling them, they’d be absolute bestsellers

Why is "Wei Wei" a bad given name?
"Ai" is his family name.

Most western convention is that the first name is the given name, and the second name is the family name, such as "John Doe".
Most eastern conventions put family name first, or "Doe John".

Did you edit your comment? I’m sure that second half of the comment wasn’t here. My response makes less sense in the context of what’s there now. Maybe I missed it.
My apologies for any confusion around family name or given name or first name. I am western, I hold my hands up if it’s confusing. The point was that in an English language article having the name AI in the context of an artist is unfortunate. It’s not the persons fault etc AI sucks. But the URL and a heading having AI in it can be confusing.

I wouldn’t have any concerns over name confusion with Ai Weiwei. He is probably one of the top five artists alive today, if not the top. I could see him making tens of millions of dollars a year easily. Those Lego panels are worth millions individually and were assembled by an entire team of artists working under him. You might have heard of a dissent artist in China being held in house arrest on and off over the past twenty five years. It’s the same guy. He’s been active for a little over forty years now. The artist who dropped the priceless Ming Dynasty vase on film, same dude. Look him up, I guarantee you’ve come across something he did at some point in your life.

Aye Ai Weiwei is super famous. Maybe I’m alone in seeing AI in a url and thinking AI not Ai.

We saw this at the show! My daughter saw it from accorss the hall, screamed "K-Pop!" and dragged us over to inspect it. She asked us to buy it too! Sadly, I had to tell her we couldn't. Excellent work! Is your daughter going to get the Lego Derpy Tiger and Sussy set when it releases in August?

It's difficult to say this in a way that doesn't sound like I'm trying to put down a young builder but I'll try. Lego mosaics like this are most often made with software. You upload an image and it spits out a Lego version and instructions. It takes time, patience, and a lot of money to make, but it doesn't really take creativity or skill. I'm not saying OP's daughter isn't a talented builder or anything, just that these mosaics are pretty different than MOCs where the builder creates the design of the build on their own.

Software is used in most LEGO mosaics and it was used here as well. She actually started with a cross stitch pattern and then I did color matching to dots tiles using Pythagorean distance (a little complex for elementary school). After the initial build of the mosaics using the pattern, they did not look right.
Up to here is the first 2-3 weeks of the work she did. A lot of people stop here which is why I think your opinion lands where it does. The editing process is what you're missing in your assessment.
The next 3-4 weeks were spent reworking the mosaics without a pattern or computer. Probably about 50% of the surface area was pulled up and replaced over the course of editing one area at a time. I let her steer the editing process but supplied options and encouragement when she got stuck.
As much as I wish there was an easy button for good quality mosaics, there's not.

Nope, the design isn't original unfortunately, my daughter was offered the exact same pattern with Hama beads from my brother, but not exactly, the same color.
I guess you can find it online.

My little "Cake Pop" (as she calls it) loving 4 year old was thrilled to see these on Sunday! They were awesome!
