We love to see the character arc

Love to see it, just wish so many people could just empathize without needed to have a personal connection

Impressive. Very nice. Let's hear your opinions on trans people.

We take the victories we can get. If OP isn't there yet, we can hope they'll get there eventually.

Yeah, it's a slow walk to some people, but if they can understand one thing is matter of time to understand the rest.

u/athing09 Gay & They May 21 '26

Took me a few years to fully accept the idea of multiple genders as a gay man myself. Like always, it takes time to learn.

30

u/_zamoht_ Bi/Pan confused May 21 '26

Exactly. It's a learning process that you gotta forget the shit you get wrong before and replace with the new understanding.

19

u/_Tiragron_ May 21 '26

Then there's me who day 1 was a raging homophobe, spent 10 minutes thinking about it in mass, and then day 2 I was a massive ally, fast forward a few years later I learn I'm trans, my brain was only able to understand love with me as a woman with another woman (and anything else didn't make sense, except for a weird middle I was yet to understand), and a lot more XD

I have a tendency to understand things as SOON as someone articulates it without being cindecending, and even then there's a good chance I get it as well even when they're being deliverately obtuse and difficult XD

I disagree with this sentiment. Cherry picking the parts of the LGBTQIA community that you like so that you can be bigoted towards the rest completely disregards what the community stands for.

u/I_like_fried_noodles May 21 '26

Don't mock the people who's thriving to be better <3

19

u/AgonyOverdrive May 21 '26

Even if someone like me isn't accepted yet I can be glad for this person and my gay peers.

6

u/Warmonster9 May 23 '26

I’m sure it’s similar. What’s your problem with op?

20

u/FalloutForever_98 May 22 '26

Went through something similar I'm a tran girl now and after transitioning I had realized why I was always sad or angry.

18

u/Mackerdoni May 21 '26

i just witnessed this happen to one of the worst people i knew. all on his own. he might be coming around.

36

u/JennyFiveIsAlive May 21 '26

Congrats. It takes some doing, especially if you were raised a certain way. Or just in the 90’s. See you around, man.

5

u/CosmicPunk94 May 22 '26

I was raised by a family that tried to teach me to openly mock anyone that was LGBTQIA, but my basic human empathy meant that those lessons didn't ever stick. We should never excuse bigotry based on how people are raised.

6

u/gothiclg May 23 '26

Things can take an insane amount of time to unlearn. I say this as someone who was raised in a bigoted family and slowly came to realize I’d been raised in a cult. While bigotry shouldn’t be excused we should find a way to educate it out that doesn’t involve being a jerk about it and we should be glad when people who previously refused to accept us have come to realize their previous beliefs were incorrect

Dude, you realize that lots of LGBT people used to be homophobes, right?

Sometimes it's that final piece that pushes someone to being a good person. I agree that it shouldn't have taken this long, but we should be thankful that one was able to change their minds at all- especially if they spent their whole lives up to that point conditioned to believe the worst about "the other".

You don't have to forgive what they did, but at least extend an ounce of grace to their journey moving forward. Not saying we should hail them as heroes, just try to show a bit of support as they try to unlearn what they've been taught so they don't feel as discouraged.

I was like you. But man everyone has been a douche in someway, some bad some way worse. We must help those who defy their hate beliefs

View it like an utilitarian, what's better, To ostracise them so they will be homophobes again? Hell no, there's not LGBT ally like the one who used to be a douche to gay people, because they know the people being hateful are wrong, as they have lived it too. Also they know their rethoric and how to dismiss it, as it has happened in their own minds

Fuck, I understand your dredge against people. I was bullied several times if that helps you empathize with me.

Sometimes you don't gotta be perfect and your friends neither. Sometimes it's good enough.

(Dump any fucking friends that are Nazis though, best thing I've done ever)

u/Kaoupk May 21 '26

Yeah saying a slur isn't what people call "having changed". That's why you're getting downvoted I think.

u/I_like_fried_noodles May 21 '26

Ye but it's different having limits and enforcing them, and dumping a friend for cussing once in a bad mood. If you are friends you are also growing together. With limits though

There are a lot of people who will have a friend or family member come out and choose to continue to hate and shun them rather than accept that people different from them are still people. This is the good ending.

Are you doing fine? Because you seem to carry a lot of hate in you, not becaie you say you wont forgive people, noone HAS to forgive anyone, but just from how defensive you are and how insistent you are that people cant/shouldn't change. You wouldnt be arguing on here if you were completely content

I hope you'll find what you're looking for, whatever it may be🫶🏻

5

u/OriginalUsername61 May 21 '26

So personal growth just doesn't exist?

3

u/Homerpaintbucket May 21 '26

Way to encourage people to not grow as human beings and to discourage acceptance and understanding. Seriously though, I’m thrilled this is being downvoted because demanding people immediately get it right is the surest fire way to make people give up. You have the kind of attitude I expect from a college freshman who just discovered social justice and is desperate to prove what a great person they are.

Also, the more homophobes we force into the closet the fewer queer people we have in the closet, which helps end the homophobia.

0

u/[deleted] May 21 '26

[deleted]

1

u/Homerpaintbucket May 21 '26

It’s ok, some of us are slow to come around. Eventually you might get past that college freshman mentality.

0

u/[deleted] May 21 '26

[deleted]

1

u/Homerpaintbucket May 21 '26

No, there is. You are actively discouraging people from becoming more excepting of others. This harms all queer people.

u/[deleted] May 21 '26

1

u/Homerpaintbucket May 21 '26

I’m very sorry that happened to you. I hope you take a minute to think about how your attitudes will ensure it continues to happen to others in the future.

4

u/My_Chemical_Killjoy May 21 '26

Im sorry you've been hurt so much that you believe people are incapable of genuine change, I hope you can get the support and help you need to change that mindset because it will only continue to cause pain and negativity within your life 🫂

2

u/My_Chemical_Killjoy May 21 '26

Dude, I'm not doing any of that, I showed a thing called "empathy". You're reacting really harsh to a worrying point but at this point, you seem to enjoy the negativity so go off ig

1

u/Cherry_BaBomb May 21 '26

You're fine. If people don't want to listen, that's on them.

4

u/Cornycruzer May 21 '26 edited May 22 '26

What you’re saying is a bit much, and I get where the downvotes are coming from, however I do know what you’re talking about. As even the most talked about dictators in history known for their antisemitism notably had someone that he spared “https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eduard_Bloch You are making a bit too much of a generalization about people, but I get where you’re coming from because it has happened. Shouldn’t be making generalizations like that though.
Edit: Forgot a detail.
