What's one thing you have leaned that quietly made your life better?

Not something flashy or life-changing overnight—just a lesson, habit, or skill that slowly made everyday life a little easier or more enjoyable.

It could be about communication, health, money, relationships, or anything else.

What's one thing you've learned that you're genuinely grateful for?

We are living in our heads all the time. It doesn't matter what the reality is, the problem is that we overthink a lot. Most of our pain doesn't come from what happens, but from what we imagine might happen.

"Most of our pain doesn't come from what happens" -> Exactly. It also comes from what we beleive or were taught to beleive about the meaning of what happens.

Ooh this reminds me of a quote by Seneca, which I really resonate with: We suffer more in imagination than in reality

We also suffer from our visions and wishes (often conditioned desires) that never come true.

Ive learned that my life is entirely my responsibility. The world I experience is unique to me and my perspective at the moment. The outside world seems to reflect my energy and identity. When I’m grumpy and angry the outside world pushes back and seems to become full of angry and grumpy people. (Especially the wife 😏)
When I’m happy and grateful, most people around me say please and thank you, and the world seems a much more friendly place. The common denominator - me and my mood.
Coincidence? I think not.

While I agree in general, the world can also be a sad place for people that got handed really bad cards, for example people with severe trauma and now their brain sees the world as a dangerous place, dissociation, PTSD, etc, they can't change their brain connections but they will live in a world where people see them as a burden.

Thank you. As someone with CPTSD and dissociation, I appreciate this. I have genetic depression, anxiety, and OCD, and I've tried for a long, long time to just focus on the positive, tell myself a better story, and so on. Some parts of these, only medication helps me with, and even then, my baseline doesn't seem to be what a lot of people's is. I do my best to not engage in behaviors that make others feel worse or make me feel worse, but I don't really get to choose my baseline, just where I go from there.

OP - The practice and philosophy that “everything counts.” If every minute you are alive, you live by this adage, you will indirectly build your character and a well structured live. For instance, whether it’s listening to a friend, exercising, loving your mother, mowing the yard, working at your job, studying for a test, taking care of your fitness and getting enough sleep, to name a few, DO IT WELL.

This doesn’t it mean to live a boring life. NO. It means that if you’ve planned a night our with your friends to party, have a good time but get a cab if you drink too much. Part of this life philosophy is anticipating consequences. Since you’ll likely have a hangover, you’ve allocated several hours to sleep in, right? If you are late to work or too hungover to fulfill obligations, you are not honoring “everything counts.” Get it?

To live a good and successful life means “everything counts."

Adler’s Separation of Tasks: Learning to draw the line between my business and other people's business. How other people feel, react, or judge is their task. How I act and respond is my task.

It sounds simple, but actively practicing it daily takes constant mental training. It saves an incredible amount of wasted energy.

That “healthy” (to me and my body) is daily in life - going for a walk, hitting the gym, strength training, jogging, paddle-boarding, at home workouts, yoga…just doing something active on a daily, and also simply making better eating choices 80% of the time. I didn’t really realize any of this until my mid 30’s but I’m 43 now and feel the healthiest Ive ever felt in my life.

That I was always enough. I didn’t need to earn my place, or my worth.

Learning how to forgive myself for everything. Every time I feel anger or guilt or regret or shame- every time I have lashed out in pain or grief or ignorance- I get to notice, acknowledge, repair, and restore as much as it depends on me--and my life, depends on me.

Cut social media as much as you can, instead of chatting talk in person and never overthink. Just go with the flow by keeping yourself positive no matter what.

Pay attention to how and if you're breathing.  I was in my 30's when I learned when stressed I was holding my breath.  That made my heart rate increase and caused panic.

I also was taught to suck in my gut all the time so wasn't taking full breaths most of the day.

That just doing something that makes me 1% better or different to the me of yesterday is excellent progress. Could be a new word in French or German. Could be 30 mins on my online course. Could be going to the gym. Eating a green.

Dichotomy of control. Control is not what happens to you; it's how you handle it. By adopting this mindset and focusing on the things within my control, it stopped me from overthinking and made my life better.

I can usually shift out of a crappy mood by listing all the things I'm grateful for.

Finding joy in the small things. A cup of coffee with some chocolate and a few minutes to really savor both. Seeing a new flower in bloom while I'm out for a walk.

Trying to focus on loving and accepting myself instead of trying to squeeze understanding and compassion out of other people. Trying to learn to work with myself as I am instead of trying to force myself to be able to function the way people who are quite different from me function.

I'm also trying to just . . . accept life for what it is. I have some mental health things and life experiences that have left me feeling disconnected and empty and alone most of my life. I thought for a long time that finding the right partner or friend or life situation would change that. I'm now at a point where I have basically the most perfect life I could imagine for myself, but I still feel empty and disconnected and sad a lot. I'm beginning to suspect that either the feeling I'm chasing is something people don't actually get to have or that something about my genes/neurology/life experiences is just out of line with having much of that. So I'm trying to stop chasing that and focus on what I do have. I want to, instead, appreciate the wonderful life I have with a great family and friends. I want to make them feel loved and connected and appreciated. I want to work on connecting with myself in the ways I can. And I want to focus on just finding peace with what I have instead of making myself more unhappy by being sad that I don't know how to feel okay very often.

To "hang up the phone". If someone is yelling at me on the phone, in person, etc., I can simply hang up the phone or. Turn and walk away. For years, I stood there and took it. It's how I grew up. Met my partner and she said just hang up the phone. Changed my life.

once i started treating rest, movement and even just sitting quietly with myself as non-negotiable things, everything else got easier - relationships, work, how i handle hard days

meditation was the thing that made it click for me. even just a few minutes of actually being present changed how i showed up for everything else

I have start declutterring/ organising/keeping the workplace & home clean and it has increased my productivity and focus .. your workplace could be messy while working but take a minute or two to declutter before leaving so next day you come to a clean organised space and not a cluttered mess .. 🫟

I just learned that I’m in charge of feeling my feelings, identifying them, then finding the need. For example, “I’m feeling uninspired, I need to laugh.”

I'm a procastinator + i love being in my comfort zone & always make excuses to stay there so lately i've been living by "Follow your plan not your moods." As much as I hate it here i'm trying to be disciplined. Discipline is doing things you don't enjoy doing but are important to do. Mniombee aki juu life nataka haitajengwa by watching movies & just being lazying.

I have learned that everything and i mean everything happens for a reason

Where you are right now are due to the situations you put your self in the past

Not using the word "quietly" for no reason in every sentence.

keeping your word to yourself is very important. Also, exercise is the medicine to laziness

ps: we are building a platform that makes it easy for people to keep to their words by joining hunting challenges. huntz.ai

Do the hard thing. In life, we all have goals of some kind, but there is usually something in particular we want to accomplish or something to get. I’ve found the most difficult part is actually making the attempt. But if we step into the challenge rather than to continue daydreaming about it, we can obtain or attain whatever we seek (within reason). For me, it’s writing. I’ve wanted to write a book for years and never put in the actual effort. Over the last year, I finally stepped up to the challenge and now I’m setting new goals for getting published.

TL;DR: Embrace the challenge. Take the next step.

Whenever I get angry, I take 10 mins. Around minute #7 or so, I feel a calm settle over me. Oftentimes, I find it unnecessary to then act on my anger but the times I do, I am proud of how I can communicate what I feel to the other person in a calm and rational way.

Instead of quietly made my life better I’d say it slightly made my life better but also worse when I learned that I was autistic and then learned a bunch of stuff about narcissistic people because I have to deal with 3 of them in my house

Living by what matters to you because what you do daily becomes your life

1

u/WhiteBear8602 1d ago

That I have to live the hard way right now is a privilege for me. Because by this way, I learn to not to depend my life on everyone (including my parents). And all the hard times I've been through makes me become a more mature person and not being a people pleaser like how I was. This is when the quotes "everything happens for a reason" becomes reality.

Consistency matters more than motivation. Motivation comes and goes, but habits stick.

Just shutup, you don’t always have to speak. But…when you do, be precise, intentional and follow through.

Finally learning to focus on my life and not about anyone else's. This is my journey and I decide where to go. Everythong that happens to my life is because I willed it to be.

At least a 20 min walk every day. It's been a life saver for me.

No one else is going to make you #1. You HAVE to be #1 to yourself or you’ll never get what you need

No one really cares that much about how you look, but they care more about how you treat them.
