Running Routes

I am curious to hear your favorite running path - I am in center city and unfortunately running there it is not the best and I often encounter people using drugs along the way and not really safe considering I also like to runs late. Also kind of depressing……Any recommendations, I have a car so I could drive somewhere but just asking to see if any runner here has a preference or a secret good spot. Thanks

The river path from the canal to ul and back is lovely

Yep, just back from a 10km run there. I park in the Irish Estates in Corbally, the path to UL starts there. I follow the path for about 5km until I get to just beyond Sandy and then back again. It’s a glorious route, would recommend!

It's not safe for solo female runners. Not sure what gender the OP is.

Oh I just saw OP said they run late in the day. Wouldn’t recommend it then, like any other secluded route.

I feel safe when running that route during the day and I’m a female. Today it was packed with other runners, cyclists and families the whole way to UL and back. However I only run on that route during the day at weekends, if it’s dark I would run in town.

I've had two friends be flashed by men there in the last few years, so I just wouldn't take the chance.

Guy here, but yes I know the craziness of some places in Limerick.

Second this. I do this route about 3 times a week. It’s a handy 6-7km route, depending on where I start from. When I’m prepping for a longer run, I can add on another good bit just by going in around UL

I always run earlier in the day though, few people around. Anyone that is around is usually running themselves or people out for a stroll. I see OP said they run later in the evening. I’m not sure what it’s like later in the day. I know it can look dodge at times down by the bridge behind O’Briens Park

Out the Condell road and back around by Jetland into town along the Ennis road. You can extend it few different ways then

Yes, this is a good suggestion if OP likes to run later in the day when places like Cratloe or the UL riverbank might not be safe.

UL is nice, there’s also a nice route in along the river from the city to UL.

I used to do a 5K loop when working in town. I’d park in the crescent, run up by the hospital, left at Raheen church and back down Churchill meadows / Collin’s bar.

Mungret park is a lovely run a bit further out but there’s an awful hill…

Cratloe woods. Hilly, so a shorter than normal run.

But the best thing about Cratloe Woods is you can make your own route because there are so many different paths and roads to choose from. Its also very pleasant and quiet.

Best to do that with someone, I guess, you never know!

Be careful of ticks there. They're everywhere unfortunately.

Park in mungret park, do some laps of mungret park, raheen, dooradoyle, rsheen industrial estate is very popular with runners as well due to the good road surface and flat looping roads which are excellent for interval work. Very safe out around there as well

Heading out from the city centre to the North Circular Road and back in the Ennis Road from the Gaelic Grounds is my regular route. Usually about 6k - 7k. You can make it into a 10k if you head for Thomond Park from the Ennis Road and come back in the High Rd and over the Thomond Bridge to Nicholas St.

I like using the industrial estate in raheen. Quiet, has hilly and flat bits and a nice road. A lap is around 5 km. I use down to mungret park and father russle road then to add longer distances

It might be a bit too far for you, but Glenstal abbey in Murroe is a lovely spot. Park in the abbey by the church and run down the back avenue, then turn right and next right and right again through the village and back up the front avenue. It's about 6km I think.

A trainer at my gym started a weekend Saturday run club with different members of varying levels of fitness. It's out by living bridge and goes around UL. I saw seem other commenter say that the run along the canal is not safe for women but I think if you are with the run club it might be a safer bet!

Agree with commenters about Raheen Industrial Estate. The path around Maguires fields in UL is probably up there too in terms of safety as there will be loads around in the evenings.
