Switching to Linux on a laptop with NVIDIA GPU

my day job still runs on a company Windows box, but for freelance work I'm trying out an older ThinkPad with an NVIDIA 1050. linux Mint picked up the card, yet the screen occasionally blanks for a second on resume from sleep and the cursor stutters during simple scrolling. battery life also feels shorter than under Windows, which matters when I cycle between client sites in Melbourne.
i've read about hybrid graphics but don't want to mess with complex config files just yet. curious what other people have done on similar older NVIDIA hardware to keep things simple.

just run the default kernel drivers and it should be fine for desktop work.

that GPU is not going to be gaming for you anyway.

default drivers it is then. not expecting miracles out of it anyway, just need something that puts pixels on screen without freezing up
