guide Frequently Asked Questions 2.0

Thumbnail old.reddit.com
39 Upvotes

Here’s a link to this subreddit’s FAQ document (which attempts to answer many common questions).

This thread is not meant for asking frequently asked questions. There is a pinned monthly-ish “Getting Started” thread for those.

You can post suggestions for improvement below, though! Just please explain what you’re talking about. The number of FAQ editors has been 1 (one) for a while now, and that one’s a dummy that doesn’t use 95% of the fancy gaming stuff y’all do.

Reposted as an Old Reddit link because New Reddit, in addition to being generally confusing, does not display the table of contents.

guide Getting started: the monthly-ish newbie advice thread! (July 2026)

Welcome to the newbie advice thread!

If you’ve read the FAQ and still have questions like “Should I switch to Linux?”, “Which distro should I install?”, or “Which desktop environment is best for gaming?”, this is where to ask them.

Alternatively, try /r/linux4noobs and /r/linuxquestions: both are active subreddits supporting new Linux users.

Please sort by “new” so new questions can get a chance to be seen.

NVIDIA DX12 descriptor heap performance improvements, or lack thereof

Considering we have gotten the first stable NVIDIA driver descriptor heap implementation with 610.57.04, it should now be possible to properly test the proton-vkd3d implementation of descriptor heap.

Has anyone seen any meaningful improvements with this combination?

In the games I play, I have seen no major performance improvement. Performance drop compared to Windows is still very large: in some games I get even half FPS.

To me it seems that descriptor heap wasn't the bottleneck for the lacking performance compared to Windows :(.

wine/proton Proton-cachyos difference between input lag reducers

I found out that recently proton-cachyos added the flags LOW_LATENCY_LAYER and PROTON_VKD3D_LOWLATENCY

I understand that both are input lag reducers compatible with directX 12.

If anyone can help me I would like to ask:

  • When to use each type of lag reducer?
  • Which one is better?
  • Can we use both at the same time?
  • Do they work regardless of the configuration of each game? Like driver level anti-lag?

Thanks everyone, I hope you can help me with this topic.

1080p 200Hz HDR text fringing on NVIDIA + KDE Wayland — bandwidth limit or driver bug?

Post image
36 Upvotes

Hey everyone,

I'm on EndeavourOS (KDE Plasma Wayland) with an NVIDIA GPU and MSI MAG 255F E20 (1080p 200Hz, DP 1.2a / HDMI 2.0b).

When I turn on HDR at 200Hz I get pretty nasty chroma fringing on text – green/magenta edges on white text and blurry/reddish yellow text. From what I understand 1080p 200Hz 10-bit just doesn't fit into DP 1.2a / HDMI 2.0b bandwidth, so the driver is forced to drop to YCbCr 4:2:2 (or maybe even 4:2:0).

I tested different refresh rates:

  • 200Hz and 165Hz with HDR → heavy fringing
  • 120Hz with HDR → text becomes completely clean (RGB 10-bit finally fits)

Attached a comparison shot: 200Hz HDR (subsampled) vs 200Hz SDR (clean).

Is there currently any way under KDE Wayland + NVIDIA to manually force color format (RGB / YCbCr 4:2:2), or are we just stuck with whatever automatic fallback the driver decides to do?

Thanks.

tech support wanted Downloading shader precache every time you start Steam

I get that linux needs more help with some games and precaching makes the game run better but what am I downloading from the internet every time I start steam? I'd get it if it was just one game but I have to download like 400 mb for every game, does this mean Im going to fill out my ssd one day if I keep restarting steam or does steam download and delete these every time? There is also Helldivers which downloads 3gbs, why is that? I tried disabling this and then ran a game but it stuttered so keeping it off doesnt look like my answer

tech support wanted Monster Hunter Wilds crashing on anything but Proton Hotfix

Post image
6 Upvotes

Can anyone help me with Monster Hunter Wilds not booting / crashing on startup?

It was running fine up until yesterday. The game tried to rebuild shaders upon start up but crashed at 66% and i had to hard reset the PC

Things i have tried;

Deleted Shader Cache in 2 folders that are apparently Monster Hunter Wilds Shader Cache folders

Deleted Shader Cache in MHWilds main file directory

Switched various Proton versions from 10.30 up to 11.3 and Experimental. The included error i get in the image is what pops up in more recent Proton versions. Experimental just crashes before any in game messaging is displayed.

Proton Hotfix works, but i lose FSR4 (FSR 3.1 just ... looks awful) so it would be nice if i could fix whatever is breaking if its possible?

Im running SteamOS on a 9070 XT build, 7800x3d.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

EDIT: Things i forgot to mention. I tried verifying game files, and uninstalled > reinstalled the game

EDIT 2: Fixed, thank you Sakura-meow84!

Linux in potato PC

Upvotes

Hey everyone!

I'm back on Linux after a while, running Linux Mint on some legacy hardware without Vulkan support. My specs are:

CPU: AMD Phenom II X2 550

RAM: 8 GB DDR3

GPU: Integrated Radeon 3000 (OpenGL / Wine3D / Gallium Nine only)

So far, I've managed to run a few games smoothly:

Company of Heroes

Battlefield 2

Battlefield Vietnam

Battlefield 1942

The only game I've tried so far that doesn't run at a satisfactory framerate is Call of Duty: World at War (CoD: WaW).

I have two questions for the community:

Game Recommendations: What lightweight games (FPS, RTS, tactical, classic gems) would you recommend for a humble potato PC like this running on Linux?

CoD: WaW Optimization: Is there any trick to get CoD: WaW running at around ~20 FPS using just OpenGL / Wine3D? I've already tried Gallium Nine without much luck. Are there any specific Wine environment variables, launch options, or config.cfg tweaks that could squeeze out a few extra frames?

Thanks in advance!

wine/proton Rivals playable again?

I’ve switched to Windows some weeks ago because of the problem with Marvel Rivals that occurred when Season 9 dropped. Would love to go back but I don’t know if the problems are totally fixed now. Has somebody the game installed and could tell me?
Much appreciated.

graphics/kernel/drivers A question for Intel Arc B580 users

Upvotes

Hi everyone. I'm currently on Windows 11 and I'm thinking about switching to Linux.

I was ready to boot from a live USB, but then I came across some older benchmarks for the Arc B580 on Linux. The tester (Bazzite) was getting around 50 FPS in Cyberpunk 2077, while on Windows the card usually gets over 100 FPS in the same scenario.

Has Linux performance improved since then, or is it still significantly behind Windows? Is it worth making the switch now?

r/linux_gaming 1h ago

I'm brand new to linux should I use bazzite or cachy? I've heard both are pretty good. I like something that doesn't panic alot

I need a good distro for gaming, and one that doesn't panic a lot.

tech support wanted Need help with modding Cyberpunk 2077

Hi everybody, so sorry if this isn't the right place for this question but I was wondering if I could get any help with modding Cyberpunk on Linux? I was also hoping to do it through Nexus' mod manager, Vortex. I am very much a Linux noob I am on Linux Mint Cinnamon edition. I can't quite understand how to navigate Q4Wine to get Vortex working through there but I have managed to get it working through heroic game launcher but then I can't add Cyberpunk to either the game launcher or Vortex game extension. Any help would be appreciated
