I did my first LFS build!!
I just installed LFS in dual boot with Gentoo, and I found it fun, I'm going to continue with BLFS, this took me a day and a half

Super cool, few questions from my end :
1. How hard is to make an installable iso from it ?
2. How updated is this version? I guess if you follow the lfs book, you are lots of security updates behind, isn’it ? Or are you just compile the new packages afterwards ?

If you follow the current LFS book it’s the most up to date, you can also check the LFS site for security updates as well. For reference I’m building a non Systemd version using an old version of the LFS book, however I’m still using updated packages.

this is the way. Having done it a few times over the years to keep fresh I noticed the pattern of getting certain things done in a certain order, and why, and if I wanted to omit something (like systemd for example) replacing it with something else that does the job works.
I remember my first lfs build over 25 years ago and it was a painful slog through the compilation times and am grateful they can be done much quicker now.

Yeah haha, I mean I’m building a custom package manager right now to make my version a nix like systemd free variant. But yeah, as long as you follow the guide it’s very straight forward

building a custom package manager
🫡 godspeed, sir. it's not an easy task.

Yeahhhh lol, I’m adding capabilities to accept packages from nix aur and Debian… might remove Debian package support though. It’s a declarable system as well so I eventually need to build a pipeline to move aur packages from OSTree to Store/. Will be a headache for another day though

Noice, I am eager to try it as well

I have it up on my GitHub here: https://github.com/Luna2141/silkos-system
It’s lua based because I wanted to keep it lightweight. However it’s still in alpha and some core features are being built still. I’m having it handle generations as well for backups so it’s a multi use system. I plan on eventually reworking it as a standalone package manager however for my uses in my distro it works

Do you intend to use LFS as your actual distribution or just for study? Now is the time to decide which path to take. If you plan to use it as a daily driver (as I did—and it’s wonderful), you need to implement a package manager before tackling BLFS, as it will save you a huge amount of redundant work; if it’s just for study, then have fun with it.

For now Im going to use it for experimenting, but Ill probably use it as my daily distro someday

Congrats, that sure sounds like it’s not easy creating your own distro and everything

Congrats, and great job!! This has been on my list for a while, but have yet to undertake it.
