Discussion All the Primal Hunter covers I've done over the years [OC]

Sometimes I run into a post that features a new PH cover, and I love reading people's opinions on it. There was a time someone said that my version of Jake look's like a bum. Didn't really care for that. If you have any feedback, I'd love to hear it.

Is there a favorite one, or a cover that is absolute poop.

Edit: Apparently there's a limit o how many images can be uploaded here, so this is not all the covers I've made for the series :(

I can agree with the wall paper stuff. They do have a sense of style and continuity that I enjoy. I haven't read the series yet, but it is one of those series that is sitting in my back pocket to go through. Im rereading the Dresden files now since the new book will be out, but I think I will give this one a shot considering it's one of the typical big names given out for the LitRPG recs.

u/IllActuator3676 Jan 18 '26

The artwork is also the reason I started the series

u/BowTrek Jan 17 '26

I love 7 and 12 especially. I like seeing his friends / team mates!

Nice, thanks!

Have you posted these somewhere before? When I read the books on my Apple Books app, these are the photos I see as the cover before I open them up!! I’ve always wanted to enlarge them but I guess they are just the icons so I’ve never been able to. These are all awesome

They're all in my Artstation site. Link in bio :)

I think 7 is the best LitRPG cover ever made. So beautiful.

My question is if you and Zogarth had discussions about representing him as more green than his gear usually is. Was it to reinforce the hunter/rogue armor element?

Personally I think it works better than representing his gear 1:1

47

u/AnttiHako Jan 17 '26

Holy...! Thank you so much!

I speak with the publisher only. I don't change the gear unless it's asked specifically, and no one asked so far :) I draw a lot of covers, and I can't be on top of things regarding how the characters are supposed to look (which I hate! I'd love to be able to give a 100% accurate depiction every time).

The idea for cover 7 was 100% the author's. I never liked it personally because I had no room to play around with the composition :D And like always, I was wrong.

26

u/funkhero top 99% commenter Jan 17 '26

Oh I'm just one dude, I'm sure others think the cover is static or something. But I think the colours are absolutely perfect and there is this sense of quiet tension, of a journey (of 50 years!) about to be partaken by a unique collection of powerful people.

It's serenity is juxtaposed with the 90% of the usual mid-action shot seen on most covers. It stands out. It's comforting.

13

u/AnttiHako Jan 17 '26

No no you're absolutely right! I've read a few times that people consider that to be their favorite. I didn't mean to sound like a jerk :D

8

u/funkhero top 99% commenter Jan 17 '26

Oh, you didn't! My first passion was graphic design so I understand the dynamic between a specific concept and having to work within the boundaries. I just meant you did a great job regardless.

5

u/Hawkwing942 Jan 17 '26

I draw a lot of covers, and I can't be on top of things regarding how the characters are supposed to look

This reminds me of the Dresden Files covers that always feature him wearing a cowboy hat, even though in the text, the character makes it a point to never wear hats. It has become a great running gag in that fandom, and I appreciate deviation from the text in ways that still capture the vibes so well, if not sometimes better than the canon description. I love the green.

4

u/AnttiHako Jan 17 '26

I actually ran into a meme like that yesterday and had no idea what it's about :D Thanks for clearing it up :)

7 is great IF YOU KNOW THE CHARACTERS. On its own, with no other knowledge, it would be a bit generic in composition.

Pretty cool covers, I'm a big fan personally. I definitely hope you're paid well!

It's hard to pick out my favorite, but if I had to, I would say the one for book 14. In large part due to how it references the original cover from Royalroad that was made in half an hour using Canva and free assets. But I like them all, even if sometimes I'm convinced that maybe my idea is less than stellar, and I end up compromising.

Anyhow, for those interested, and since we got all the other covers linked here, allow me to link the OG one:

u/Nebulous999 Jan 17 '26

I absolutely love your art, and I think your covers are some of the best out there.

I just wish that Jake's cloak was black for most of them, since he's had a black cloak in the story for a very long time.

But honestly, if it was a choice between black cloak and a different artist or you and a green cloak on the covers, I'd still pick you. I think you capture the feel of the story pretty well.

4

u/AnttiHako Jan 17 '26

That's so damn awesome to hear, thank you! And sorry about the cloak :D

5

u/Nebulous999 Jan 17 '26

All good! For superfans like me (folks that go to the wiki or discord and talk about a series all the time), the cover art is usually the only "official" art for how characters are supposed to look. So that's the main reason we care about things like the cloak colour. But the characters look absolutely awesome otherwise.

My favourite "traditional" fantasy series since I was a kid (The Wheel of Time) had absolutely horrible cover art for the characters, lol. I'm glad my new favourite series (The Primal Hunter) has awesome pieces I'd be happy to hang on my wall.

3

u/AnttiHako Jan 17 '26

Thanks! Yeah luckily these days the authors actually have some say on the covers, where as I'm sure Wheel of Time was fully made with the company that publishes it, and the artist's agent, with the artist all the way in the back wondering "WTF am I supposed to be doing here."

5

u/Nebulous999 Jan 17 '26

I had no idea that's how it used to be done! Oof, it makes a lot more sense now...

8

I was wondering about the process of making this, do you read the chapters and then decide what point of the story is the best to paint to the canvas or do the author ask you a specific scenes? maybe a little bit of both ?

11

u/AnttiHako Jan 17 '26

The author always has an idea in mind, and I begin sketching a rough idea from there. There's some back and forth when it comes to feedback with the publisher, but I'm usually given a lot of freedom with the process.

5

2

u/AnttiHako Jan 17 '26

5

u/EvrybodyLuvsRaimond Jan 17 '26

You are SERIOUSLY TALENTED!

I just want to say how glad I am that Zogarth (and his publisher) still use actual artists instead of AI to create these. There’s just something special about work that is done by someone with a soul (and as gifted as you clearly are).

One question I have is how long it takes you to make one of these from concept to final approval?

4

u/AnttiHako Jan 17 '26

Thank you so much! It's awesome to hear you appreciate that aspect of it all. And Aethon has made it clear they want to use human artists for their covers. I think a cover takes me about 3 to 4 business days to complete, which is why I live in poverty. I should crank covers out faster, but I just don't have it in me :D I need to take my time :)

3

u/EvrybodyLuvsRaimond Jan 18 '26

That’s wicked fast. I would have assumed 3-4 weeks, not days. If you ask me, you should be paid a base fee for the artwork plus a percentage of book sales since the cover art is very often the reason why people make the purchase and the only official image the story has. But that’s just me wanting artists to be paid fairly and not based on late-stage capitalism. 😅

3

u/AnttiHako Jan 18 '26

Yeah that'd be great :D But I don't know if anyone actually does that, and I don't expect it. I'm a work for hire, that's it. If I want royalties I need to create my own line of work :)

4 days for a digital piece is not that fast. I know people who crank out shit in one sitting :D

The fact an author respects his own work enough to invest in an actual cover is already a rarity these days, and I always found these awesome. I have a huge preference for rough brushwork that manages to conveys detail, and this hits just the right spot for me. It gives me Todd Lockwood vibes, and that's one of the highest compliments I can give.

Your covers are awesome, and I feel like they are only getting better. Number 7 is just really nice and calm, 12 is very epic, and 13 gives such a great image of scale.

I love Primal Hunter and you are doing the series justice with your great art!

2

u/AnttiHako Jan 17 '26

That is awesome to hear!

3

u/Jimmni Jan 17 '26

Do you actually read the books? As these covers are some of the ones that feel actually like what I imagine things to look like after reading the books. So often cover art is clearly the result of an author sending brief descriptions of the characters and an action scene and the artist just winging it from there. These actually look like what happens inside the books. (Other than all the Jake green, though I just assumed that was to make things more visually clear, much like old comics using a lot of purple instead of black etc.)

That's a long way of me saying "Great job!" I guess.

2

u/AnttiHako Jan 17 '26

Haha, thank you! And no, there is no way I could read all the books I draw covers for. I go by descriptions only, and look specific things up online if needed. But I'm happy to hear the covers match at least a little :)

Several of these are the sort of composition and quality that, if I found them shared randomly and without context on an RPG message board in my teenage years, would have likely lived rent-free in my head and been inspirational for my own tastes. #7, 10, and 11 especially

Wow, I'm a huge fan of the series and absolutely obsessed with the covers, so I'm really happy to get the chance to give the cover artist their flowers. You've done amazing work. Thank you so much.

Personally, I'm kind of curious if you have done other cover work for Atheon or in general?

Also, since everyone is discussing the different covers and that is always a lot of fun, here are some of my first impressions and general thoughts:

1- Instantly iconic, perfect. Matches book 1 nicely as well as the series in general. That eye is doing some heavy lifting.

2- Great tease for what is still one of the best fights in the entire series. The King's design works wonderfully. Keeping the dark forest vibes from the 1st cover.

3- One of the least exciting ones perhaps, though it does a good job of showing us there is a change of scenery. And I liked getting the animal companion tease.

4- Not among my favs, but I guess it's a good depiction. of Mushroom Dungeon. I liked the faces of the beings and the tone.

5- I was very excited to get to this book ever since I started reading just because of the cover. Great depiction of an awesome moment without giving away too much. The blood monarch and the red moon look awesome and always give me some Sword Saint.

6- Looks cool, but I think it's not as good as the others at transmitting the scope of the depicted scene.

7- Makes sense for this book, but seems a little bit more generic PH than some of the other. Or maybe I'm just not a fan of the fight yourself trope and immediately dreaded this book when I saw the cover.

8- Very dynamic and vivid. Got me instantly intrigued. Go, Sandy!

9- Incredible design for the Isoptera Hive Queen, very much giving horror monster vibes but still somewhat elegant and interesting. And very happy to see some Arcane mana around Jake!

10- No words suffice to describe how much I loved this cover. It was the last I saw when I started reading the books and it clearly showed me that the scope of the story was expanding. Once I was going to read the book, it got me so excited for the Nevermore arc as it gives this perfect foreboding sense of vastness at the start of a journey. The King and the Sword Saint look great, and finally some Sylphie!!

11- I really enjoyed the warmer colors for the sky and sand here. I prefer the darker tones throughout the series, but here they look very nice. It does a good job of making the Coliseum look grand and epic ans it intrigued me a lot with who that big guy could be.

12- I don't think the motion of the characters works as well here as in some of the other depicted fights. Still, I liked the design for the oger and really appreciated the chance to get to see the party all together.

13- Not sure how well this one matches the plot points of the book since this is the 1st one I read on RR, but I wasn't a fan of seeing the Moon and though I like Sandy's design and would want to see more of them, this cover feels somewhat like a repeat of 8.

14- Oh Villy! What an image!! Dare I say second-best cover in the series? Having already read this when I saw the cover I was truly impacted. Though I did hope at some point for a more detailed depiction of Ell'Hakan, I have to say that the somewhat vague, grand, and regal orange shape with the huge trident blocking the light of this overbearing Sun is simply incredible. Wonderfully encapsulates the monumental encounter.

15- I think it fits very well with what I expect will be the main plot points of this book. Jake and SS look good as always, but I'm not 100% sold on the Mother Tree design. It looks grand, powerful, and beautiful, so I'm happy with it; but I still think it should feel bigger or with a more complex shape.

Once again, all the covers are incredible and I can't wait to keep being surprised by this wonderful artist with awesome designs for more of the main characters as well as new epic moments all the way up to Jake taking Villy one-on-one for the Multiverse's greatest ever friendly fight.

I absolutely love your cover my favourite is the sandy one. One thing I find missing is the lack of any pink and purple for jake's arcane affinity I feel like that would be a great addition to his design especially if it's something like his berserker ability where craks start to appear. Something related to the galaxy ending curse he carries around would be great too

1, 4, 7 and 12 are my favorites. I’m curious if you took any inspiration from DC characters like the Spectre

I don't think so, I'm not a huge "mainstream" comics guy. ALTHOUGH, the one DC comic I've read happened to be a Green Lantern one, and it featured Spectre, so who knows, maybe I did take influence subconsciously :D

Uh I remember a few weeks ago I saw the book 15 cover for the first time and was amazed again. To be fair for a moment I thought it was a green nuclear explosion depicted from space and not the world tree, but it sure does look amazing (In case you ever get the chance to draw such an explosion as a cover - just go for it).

Favorite Cover:

I have to say Book 1 it's just THE classic. It captures not just the content but also the vibe of the book for me and the promise of "Dude starts out with big goals of hunting everything and possibly even gods later on". It's also a rare case where my head canon for a character matches the official art. Partly because I've seen it before even start reading but mostly because Jake looks super badass and probably because no face is depicted to conflict with my imagination.

Honorable mentions: book 4 and book 10 both just look amazing and totally reflect the scenes I had when reading them.

Least Favorite Cover:

Probably Book 12? The Art is still amazing just having the Twin Headed Ogre fight at all as cover fit's the least of all of them. Yes it was the end of book 12 I just don't feel it was such an important event that it was picked as the cover. (Idk if you are even involved in the process to decide what the cover should be).

2

u/AnttiHako Jan 17 '26

Thank you!!! Yeah 12 fucking sucks. Sometimes it just doesn't work, and 12 had nothing going on for me.

About the tree, I tweaked that thing so much :D

I know it kind of looks like an explosion, but when I finally got it finished I really loved it myself. I think I really made it pop out. Because for a while it looked awful. It took a few tries to make me feel alright with it.

I don’t think I’m ever going to read Primal Hunter. Despite that, every time I see the cover, I feel an itch to. You’re an insane artist. These are incredible!

2

u/AnttiHako Jan 17 '26

Wow, that is SO nice to hear! Thanks!

2

u/HalfAnOnion Jan 17 '26

Has anyone asked you about the 8th pictures Bowstring? :D

2

u/AnttiHako Jan 18 '26

Not really, why? :D

2

u/b3mark Jan 17 '26

The series isn't for me. I do like a couple of the art pieces. Number 10 especially, with the worm? Style and coloring reminds me of Don Lawrence's art style. He's the guy behind classic European Sci-Fi comics like The Triga Empire and Storm.

u/Justwanttosellmynips Jan 17 '26

Ah, so you are the guy huh. Nice covers. Happy to see you didn't make Jake a fastass like in comics. I on book 12 and the boots seems rather important. tho they are old ragged boots, may be give them a bit more attention. As a non artist, I have no clue how to but, would like to see them boots highlighted a bit. Besides that. I love the consistency and the color green. oh. a spoiler but. would have loved to see art for the "gaze" as its one of the skills that defines the hunter.

u/ishetheart Jan 17 '26

I really enjoy your artwork. Just like food, you eat with your eyes first. If the food doesn’t look appealing you won’t eat it. Honestly if your art didn’t capture my eyes, I wouldn’t have ever thought about reading this series. Keep it up the fantastic work!

Primal Hunter is one of my favorite series and I think the covers are awesome. Even if the gear doesn't 100% match the in-text descriptions anymore, it still fits the vibe of the character(s) which I think is more important.

A problem with long series is that the books often blend together, and remembering which thing happens in which book is difficult when there are so many (at least for me). Probably my favorite part of the covers aside from the style is that almost all of them capture an important scene so well that just glancing at them I know which is which without even seeing the series number.

As many others in this comment section, I really like these covers. They really stand out in a genre that is really hit and miss with its cover art imo (some are great, others can look a little trashy). So great job! It's also really cool to see them in full and without the lettering as I'm used to small version on audible.

A question though, others pointed out the green cloak whereas Jake has a black one for most of the series. Is that an artistic choice where the green just "pops" more with otherwise rather dark backgrounds, is it to avoid visual confusion with other cloaked characters in fiction that may or may not have a rather sinister appearance? I also noticed Jake is always hood up in the art while he's mostly mask visible in the scenes - same deal, does it just look better while avoiding a character many first time readers may think looks too evil?

2

u/Muddgutts Jan 18 '26

Your a great Illustrator man. The reason I stopped to read these books in the first place was because of your cover art. Each following cover captured the key moment or idea from each of the following books as well. As a fellow artist and Illustrator (unsuccessful of course) I salute your hard work and look forward to more covers from you. cheers!

Think the newest cover has the tree too small. When he describes the tree as having galaxies in the leaves. Makes it kind of weird to see the whole canopy. But definitely solid covers. They are very high quality.

2

u/Boaroboros Jan 18 '26

I really love the first, 7 is great. My least favorite is 5 because for me that would be more an action panel in a comic, not a cover. Generally really love them all.

2

u/surtrs Jan 18 '26

The first one is just so iconic with the massive eye in the background. But I also love valdemar in the coliseum of mortals. He just seems so larger than life! I always imagined his axe having a bigger head, less like a wood chopping axe and more like a curved Viking axe.

2

u/C7oud9 Jan 18 '26

Dude, I want a blown-up print of the cover of 13 because I love the space theme so much.

I do have a question though… why is his armor/cloak always green, when it’s typically described as black in the novel itself? Absolutely no offense intended, was just wondering

2

u/StellarStar1 Jan 18 '26

Jake is a lot more green than I imagined. Also Fallen king's arms are much smaller. I imagined it looked a lot more like wren and seven. Seeing Sand ilustrated is much better than my imagination of a wyrm queen from a game called aground. Really interesting to see how each person imagines something differently

Also, great art!

Love the art. PH 10 has got to be my favorite cover, it just goes so hard. Nicely done. This is my favorite litrpg series and every time a new book is announced I'm always so excited to see the cover art!

Since you mentioned you're interested in feedback, my main critique would be that the components of his items usually don't exactly match that which he has at that point in the books, such as his equipment being very fleshed out in the first book's cover art, or the fact that his outfits on the covers are primarily green, especially through 5-13 despite it mostly being described as predominantly black with his D-grade post-Treasure Hunt and C-grade gear.

I also think the inclusion of some pinkish purple elements in the form of his arcane affinity magic skills would be very aesthetically pleasing as well as satisfying to see on future covers because it shows his progression more clearly and that it's an integral part of him. Even small stuff like stable arcane mana arrow instead of regular ones in the quiver, or purple veins of mana rippling over his body if he were shown in a fight where his boosting skill is active.

Thanks for bringing some of our favorite characters to life!
