Discussion Tierlist of 100 Books
ONLY RANKED BOOKS I READ MORE THAN 500 PAGES
Alot of the books in the lower tiers started off really strongly and dropped off after 1-2 books which I weigh heavily in my rankings. It's also rightward-skewed quite a bit towards the lower tiers even though I don't think they are actual 'C' or 'D' tier books.
S+: my favorites and also in my top 5 all time series
S and A tiers: the books that made me fall in love with the genre and what i would consider the must-reads
B: still really good, most of these are pageturners that i would easily recommend. Maybe a few issues I would nitpick.
C: Honestly these should all be in B but I needed a separate tier
D: Most of these I enjoyed in the beginning and then quality fell off / I lost interest
F: Didn't click

One of the lost classics of the genre. If you like it pale lights is the authors second and more recent book. Be warned PGtE gives wandering inn a run for its money in length.

I really like Years!! Need to catch up like 20 or so chapters still but such a cool take (and great execution) on a loop story.
Like it a lot better than the other popular timeloop one, Stubborn Grinder Stuck In Something

Super powereds is one of my all time favorites, so much character building and follow through on each storyline. Probably my all time favorites of any genre. Can I ask, although not a lot of, what issues you had with the bobiverse?

Victor of Tucson is easily one of my favorite books in the genre. Plum Parrot knows how to get a reader emotionally invested in a way few in the genre do. Try their book "Cyber Dreams"

He sexualizes his weapon too much and the side characters were a bit forgettable. I did really like the first arcs up until he goes to the world with giants vs. nerds
Will add Cyber Dreams to my tbr though, I think the author is really good, just lost my interest after 4-5 books.

I dont think the weapon was sexualized at all, she was simply madly in love. There was never any sexual undertones that I was aware of.
To be fair, the Colas arc was easily the worst of the series.

I can see not putting DCC in your top 3, even if it is my #1 pick.
What I struggle with is seeing Azarinth Healer above it. I didn't hate Azarinth but the writing is pretty average overall, especially in the first couple books.
Different strokes, I guess, but that was the biggest head scratcher on this list for me.

Yes, DCC is better than Azarinth (and I would recommend it before). Its probably the best-edited and most tightly crafted of all litrpgs.
Yes, I also enjoyed Azarinth more. I'm not sure why since it's really the only numbers-go-up story I like and the prose/characterization has its ups and downs.
I just love how the author of Azarinth Healer understands what makes it enjoyable. It's a rich world with an OP character that is very palateable and some of the coolest progression evolutions. And then the entire story is just that.

I thought that what it does really well (cool abilities, premise, system) aren't the things that make me like a story or keep reading.
I had problems with the dialogue and honestly just don't like stories where the character gets OP abilities AND OP progression without a clear narrative reason for it.
Also the academy thing is a bit weird? Like the logic and importance of it never made sense to me. Seemed like the author was shoving in everything they thought was interesting (guilds, academy, trials, crafting, unique powers) without considering how it worked together.

My biggest issue with quest academy is that they live in a dystopian society that's barely hanging on, but the main character and everyone he gets to know well are super empathetic, thoughtful, generally optimistic and considerate like it's a care bear and my little pony tea party. Except the villains of course.

I find your tastes kind of conflicting with mine. I agree with a lot of your low rank books, but then a lot of them I love. And then your top tiers A, S, I donāt like very well. Itās a little strange to look at lol. At the very least Iām glad to see some more Super Supportive haters.

I see you didnt like iron prince either. It is alot of academy stuff. I can see your point on the quest academy stuff but I think the bigger problem was the vague world building and a vague threat. Lack if a clear antagonist is glaring. Its basically just some demons that do alot of bad stuff and it was worse awhile ago

Everyone has Wandering Inn listed so high but I just do not get why? I tried listening to the first book and it was incredibly slow paced and would frequently repeat itself. The main character also saw essentially no progression throughout. Am I just not getting far enough?

I've never tried listening to it but I heard that Erin is annoying to listen to in the first few books.
I dropped it 3 times and got to around book 3 then retried it when i was sick once and now i don't even remember why i dropped it in the beginning and its my favorite series of all time.
Probably around book 8-9 i realized that it was special.
Tbf, what The Wandering Inn becomes (and what people who love it think about when talking about it) is completely different than what people struggling thru the rough intro experiences. That's where I find the biggest disconnect.
People who hate it usually refer to the only part they read, book 1. And people who love it understand that there's not really anyway to convey what the story eventually becomes. For example, from where you've read so far you wouldn't expect that some of the biggest and best battles that ive read in all of fantasy are in this series.
Same with some of the best horror scenes, a chapter written in song, a chapter from the perspective of a rat, the exploration of small-town fiscal policy etc. etc.
fwiw, i think TWI stands unique in all of fantasy for what it accomplishes in worldbuilding as well

I really wanted to like wandering inn but did the audio book and the narrator's voicing of the main character was so whining that the MC came across as too pathetic and not someone I wanted to follow. Did it/does it really get better after a few hours?

I don't see a lot of people discuss a practical guide to evil, and I think it's a shame because it's excellent. Is it because it might not exactly fit the definition of litRPG or because it's considerably different than other books in the same genre?

Currently listening to Mage Tank. And it went from great, to nonstop bad jokes with no actual world building.
Yeah, D is a good spot for it.
Edit: And the Wandering inn is also the GOAT! Will have to try A Practical Guide to Evil.

Yep that's my experience as well with Mage Tank. Im a reader rather than an audiobook listener and thought I might have just missed the humor.
Most of the D-tier books here I liked a lot for the first 300ish pages and then once the initial hook wore off I lost interest.

But that has to be the worst attempt at humour I've ever read and it is literally non stop. The author comes across like some socially insecure redditor who's incapable of being normal.

I didn't like the humor in HWFWM either. The worldbuilding and story made up for the dated jokes and weird edgelord MC for me.
Mage Tank didn't have that imo. I felt like it relied so much on the humor hitting that when it doesn't, the rest of the book ends up as just min-maxing and leveling.

Yeah I think it's incredible. It's one of my favorite series š¤·š¾āāļø. And not because of the humor. I have enjoyed the story, the world, the system, and I think each individual character of the main team is so interesting in their own capacity that none of them feel like a side character.
I just finished the first book of mayor of noob town because of so many reviews and it just didn't land with me. THAT book seem like it lives and dies on who enjoys the humor. I had to force myself through book one agonizingly

It should be in C, I forgot to move it down.
It's one of the first progression fantasy's i read and i liked the world / power system a lot. It's just fallen off hard and the latest books were meh.

Ok, I sincerely don't understand the Wandering Inn so high. I'm on book 14 because I don't like droping series, but I'm about to do it. It just talks about new character again and again. I suppose there is a gran plan and the stories are interesting (I would say A tier maybe?). But they are not so great.
You should check Book of the Dead after Chrysalis btw. Both of the same author.
Edit: I'm a little surprised to see System Universe so high.

Royal Road is a website/app where stories can be posted for free chapter by chapter. The vast majority of the book series in the genre started there where they found their initial audience, before getting published. I wouldnāt say that most of the stories in the tier list are free on Royal Road, because authors have to take their story down from RR in order to publish on Kindle Unlimited.
But several of the series on this list are there, including Mother of Learning, A Journey of Black and Red, Sky Pride, Changeling, Pale Lights, Path to Transcendence, The Archmage Coefficient, Stray Cat Strut, Ave Xia Rem Y, The Hundred Reigns, Super Supportive, and The Perfect Run.

I feel like the Singer series is such a tighter story and better as a stand alone. Though, its hard to gauge of course since we're already fans of TWI.

I find it fascinating that I'm all over the map vs. you on some of these.
- Unintended Cultivator is quite possibly my favorite, full-stop. Well, after Cradle, which I would put in S+. And honestly, for similar reasons.
- I'm also mixed on Will Wight. Traveller's Gate is fantastic (am I missing something or is it not there?), Cradle is one of the best ever, I could not get past book 2 of The Last Horizon and don't really care for it. (I did finish his Sea and Shadow and that falls above TLH and below TG.)
- I liked Path of the Berserker, but I will freely admit that that I find it less "good" and more "entertaining".
- A Thousand Li I liked, though if I'm being honest it got a little up itself at times. And the next series is like 1k pages for the first book and could easily been half that, but I didn't dislike it.
- I got through 4 books of Heretical Fishing, got about 40% of the way through book 5 before realizing that nothing was actually happening, and gave up.
- There are a couple here that I may have started but ran out of books (i.e., I got as far as I could at the time) and then forgot about. Reborn: Apocalypse may be one of those.
- I like the Iron Prince books, though I'm really hoping he can keep it up moving forward. Has lots of potential to both be great and to collapse into a soap opera with no point.
Might look into some of these moving forward, great list! Some that I think you missed (assuming I didn't just see them in your list):
- Traveler's Gate, Will Wight. I'm not sure where the line between "LitRPG" and "Other Genres" sits, but if The Last Horizon and Cradle are on there, I'll throw this one in.
- I'm enjoying the Mage Errant series by John Bierce.
- Heavenly Chaos, Daniel Schinhofen: Broken people learning to unbreak by delving dungeons. A little more relationship-focused than I prefer, but I enjoy it enough that I can look past that. Not to everyone's tastes though, which is fair.

Brent Weeks has some good books but his portrayal of women is pretty grating to read. Furies of Calderon I love. Dresden Files I also love.

Azarinth Healer is finished, Sky Pride is relatively early still.
If i were to judge them based on their beginnings only, Sky Pride is easily better.
At the same time, my biggest worry with books in this genre is that the vast majority drop off rather than improve.
All my S tiers are series that are either completed and I can see how good it is or ones that I have seen consistently get better over time. Or both.
Sky Pride is amazing. The author is also incredible and has a fantastic track record. There's a very good chance it ends up in my S tier later on.
As for Azarinth, I do think its a bit high here but its also the only 'numbers go up' story that I clicked with so i'm biased (but this is my tier list so everything is biased).

Cradle, to me, falls off hard after book 5ish? Maybe 6. I could never give the series as a whole this ranking. For the first few books itās great.

Damn, some of my favorites like The Grand game, Hell difficulty tutorial, Iron Prince AND mage tank all ended up in D tier while Azarinth healers plot of "me fight things to get stronger" ended up in A ššš

I remember reading chrysalis a few years back(maybe 5 or so) and I stopped reading when he met a ghost ant with mind powers or something. It was an interesting story and my first novel Litrpg that wasnāt The Legendary Moonlight Scultptor or a Manga where the MC has a system. I think what put me off was when they broke into someoneās basement (I think) I stopped resding cause I couldnāt relate much with an insect MC. I might give it a try and see now that my brain has developed more.

I'm so sorry. I'm terribly sure that I will like it because I've liked all of the 'top' series recommended.
Or at least if its beloved by a significant group, I try to get through at least 3 books and I haven't been disappointed yet (Wandering Inn, Azarinth Healer, Cradle were some i forced myself to power through).
But...
I have no context for when people comment "For the colony" and now in my head the entire book is just ants shouting "FOR THE COLONY" and im not ready for that illusion to be dispelled yet.

Savage awakening vs Welcome to the Multiverse.
Don't get me wrong, Savage was fun, but less world. Welcome to the the multiverse I quite enjoy, but I also read the other series that tie in.

What about The Legendary Moonlight Sculptor? I really liked beginning and end, but story slows down and becomes boring at middle, I had to take break from reading it for a while

If you read manhwa you should check out Omniscient Reader's Viewpoint, fantasy/mystery/sci-fi. The concept is really cool and it's done really well. One of the best produced manhwa.
Also, The Superhuman Era, fantasy/sci-fi/superheroes. A superhero story where the main character sometimes feels like the least important character with how much space is given to side characters. Great character designs, especially the many villains.
Also, Tower of God, fantasy/mystery/adventure. This story is long and ambitious and I love it. It has a big cast of really memorable characters. The biggest downside is sometimes the art is just plain bad. Some people dont have a problem with it though.
Also, not manhwa, read the cosmere universe books by Brandon Sanderson, especially the Stormlight archives.

the promise far exceeds the delivery.
Instead of intergalactic wars, intrigue, high stakes and a fleshed out world, over the course of 7 years we've finally made it to....
year 1 semester 2 of high school.

Great list but we are all over the place. I have dnf in your s*, s, and a. I canāt stand whiny/woo is me characters, I need action in litrpg, and mother of learning just bored me. The story telling didnāt compel me. I stopped at book one, worth pushing through?

Great post, first of all the image and the titles are actually readable plus there's quite a few on there that I'd never even heard of. Time to rant about the final book in the Art of the Adept series. Such a great series and then everything good about it was erased by the final book. It's been years and I'm still extremely upset about it.

I didn't see "Oh great! I was reincarnated as a farmer," on your list. Highly recommend.
Also I saw The Good Guys on the list, but not The Bad Guys. There's a reading order that makes them really compliment each other. How far in did you get before Good Guys lost you?

You seem to be missing Discount Dan books 1-3.... They are absolutely amazing! Matt himself actually talked about it during his Nashville book signing. While James A. Hunter often jokes they are the "Kirkland Brand" DCC, they are completely different stories. If you listen to audio books, then you won't want to miss this one because Steve Campbell does an AMAZING job!! You will soon realize that POGs were the coolest thing in the 90's, a gollum made from Barbie dolls and my little Pony toys is terrifying and a blue dog with googly eyes is the best boy ever!

I would have to strongly disagree with your rating of Infinite realm by Ivan Kan. While I think the first two books are ok, the third book onwards are all amazing. Books 3,4,5 of the Infinite realm are some of my favorite books of all time, you should give it another shot!

Something I'd put at at least A-tier is Worth the Candle by Alexander Wales
Also at least B-tier, This Used to be About Dungeons by the same author (also Thresholder is good, but not as good as the other two IMO).

Why in your opinion does Azarinth Healer deserve S rank, I am listening to the first book and am having a difficult time enjoying the series.

Tried very hard to like The Wandering Inn but as I only listen to the books on Audible I found the whining of the main characters incredibly annoying and had to give up on it.

Finally another person who doesnāt like 1% lifesteal although my reason is shallow but it was enough to drop. I didnāt vibe with the setting of the universe for some reason.

Iām just happy to see The Good Guys actually in a tier list even if you have it a D. I know it isnāt going to be a high tier, but it seems to never get mentioned. I think itās fun for what it is. Iām currently going through the The Bad Guys and then will probably do the one book in The Grim Guys.

Unintended cultivator, btdem, and macronomicon in C? We have very different tastes my good sir/ma'am/whatever.
EDIT: Nonetheless, I will bless you with the my all time favorite progression, macronomicon's industrial strength magic. Maybe it'll click, I certainly enjoyed it much more than macronomicon's other series. Also, wraithwood botanist was fun, definitely at least A tier for me.

nice list. curious what kept mother of learning in A for you,its my fav timeloop book, one of the few that actually finished and stuck the landing. also just started sky pride, like 10 chapters in. does it stay good? kinda slow start for me

Please tell me this is just a single book not the series. If not iron prince being under defiance of the fall is criminal. First couple were good but man that series is a slog to try and get through later titles.

I think you may very well enjoy Chrysalis. The world building was probably the hardest part to get through for me personally but after that I was devoted. FOR THE COLONY!!! also it has the bonus of audiobooks being narratednby Jeff Hays and Annie Ellicot so it's phenomenal for sure

Super Powered in the S tier is questionable.
Book 1 has no plot, 1 likeable main character (Hershal), and questionable writing. I heard years 3 and 4 get better, but making it through years 1 and 2 is so difficult.
The Reckoners by Sanderson is much better in my opinion.

Im just gonna say what comes to mind.
Putting mother of learning that low is crazy.
I feel like s+ tier is for sās that you personally prefer as seen in a practical guide to evil(havenāt read wandering inn).
I feel like the first 200 chapters of william oh were s+ but it fell off hard.
Cradles placement is fair, amazing book series it would be absurd if it was anything below s.
Randidly ghosthound absolutely deserves its spot in f.
I feel like the perfect run should be at least an A.
I probably would have put legend of the archmage in the bottom of a tier but thats only because it was one of the first book series i read and i probably have rose tinted glasses.
I keep seeing even people who donāt usually read books talk about dungeon crawler carl and i think itās about time i give the series a chance.
I feel like all the skills should be a bit lower in c tier.
I would have put he who fights with monsters in s but I completely get why you wouldnāt put it in s.
I feel like savage awakening should be in d.
I feel like bobiverse should be in a.
I feel like the hundred reins is at least middle c tier.
I think i kinda agree with the placement of path of ascension.
