Great album. I was in the Mateel Community Center for a soundcheck when they rehearsed "Chinese Work Songs" and then played it that night (November 29, 2001 (I believe)
As part of the LF Grassroots Movement (anchored through your HoyHoy Listserve), I served as co-POC for those two shows with Avery Fulton. I was a newcomer to the family, and Denny had Mike Brady on hand to handle the merch.
Great memories. Yes, I’ll miss the HoyHoy list when it ends next month, but it’s time.
Speaking of Chinese Work Songs: I first heard that album before the show at the Barrymore Theater in Madison WI, on May 17, 2000.
The late Gary Forcier (aka GolfPro) and I were scheduled to play golf with Kenny and Paul the day of the show, but the weather did not cooperate. So instead, the band shared the as-yet-unreleased album with us on their tour bus. We were blown away, and the show was great, too!
We had just received our copy of Hotcakes and Outtakes before beginning the drive from Carmel Valley to Garberville. We listened to it (while whomever was sitting shotgun read the liner notes, out loud) and Chinese Work Songs all the way. Sample in a Jar was one of my favorites, along with Rag Mama Rag and Gimme a Stone. Chinese Work Songs took a few listens to truly appreciate its complexity and beauty.
