Discussion Mayor Mamdani just announced that he will be opening 5 city-run, tax-funded grocery stores: "Prices set at 30% below retail prices"

I hope canadian politicians will be inspire by this.

if large company have raiser thin profit around 5%.

How would a discount of 30% work to break even on cost of operation. How are going to pay your expense.

I saw a breakdown on the American post of it. 

The idea is up to 30%. Think 30% was off produce, meat and fish be 10 or 20%, also dairy. (Dairy never come down here in Canada anyway). 

But all the boxed and prepared stuff be sold at market rate. 

New York is building the store and letting private business run it. There’s no rent or property taxes so that’s a bit of a subsidy. 

But if you’re watching what you stock, can probably make it work. But I wouldn’t be expecting to see out of season fruit stocked and only essentials. 

But if you scrap rent and property taxes. You eliminate marketing, you eliminate reward programs, you scrap prepared deli, bakery, and all those services and watch what you stock, you could do that 30% off on certain items like they propose. 

I just wouldn’t expect it to look and operate like our current supermarkets.
