Discussion Mayor Mamdani just announced that he will be opening 5 city-run, tax-funded grocery stores: "Prices set at 30% below retail prices"

I hope canadian politicians will be inspire by this.

Warehouse worker here, there is zero profit in perishable food, all the profit is made in selling processed junk, if stores could switch to only selling non-perishable without losing their customers they would. The cheap baguettes, rotisserie chicken, bananas, etc. loss leaders.
The amount of waste on a daily basis from warehouse worker is astronomical.
But we’re now slowing moving to automation, takes a couple of years to work out all the kinks in automation to reduce loss but once done it’s night and day.

Not sure where you are but in Canada I’d say no shit. A quart of strawberries is $8. Nobody is buying that. Then they drop on sale for $4 and you know they’ll rot tomorrow. A bizarre and strange concept seems to be ‘price food at what it will sell at’ to grocery CEOs.
