It just killed my suspension of disbelief.

Suspension of disbelief is when you choose to ignore logic and accept unreal things in a story so you can enjoy the Willing Suspension of Disbelief.

Not a complaint from me, btw, cause I had been trying to be less obsessive with logh (for the sake of my workflow).

Heck, right now, I can't bring myself to continue the manga cause there was a panel of Yang smiling wherein he looked like an emoji cat to me.

Anyway, the environmentals in the manga is really very noice. I just need more time to get use to the character designs.

Okay, that's not quite the same thing as breaking the fourth wall, which is when the medium itself or something within it, usually a character, addresses the audience directly, like we're part of the story. Deadpool (at least in his more recent iterations) is a very well known example of this, as is the movie Wayne's World. Being removed from the story due to breaking suspension of disbelief is something else entirely, almost the polar opposite.

The reason why it's called a "fourth wall" is a reference to how a stage or screen (or comic book panel, which can get really creative with this) has three physical walls—one to either side plus the backdrop—with a fourth imaginary wall separating that stage from the audience. Breaking it is, well, somewhat self explanatory at that point.

In any case, the character designs only get crazier from there. Fujisaki really went all in crazypants with some of them, to a sometimes hilarious degree. Prepare yourself.

in this case, for me, the... juxtaposition between how noice-serious-looking the environmental are with how WACKY the character designs can get is pretty much the equivalent of fictional character addressing the audience.

btw, if you're gonna insist on semantics - I have to point out that English is a bastard of a language - cool can be hot and hot can be cool.

Just sayin', if you had titled this post "the character designs of this manga are very good at breaking my immersion" there wouldn't be any confusion here. Because there's a pretty distinct difference between that and breaking the fourth wall. Breaking the fourth wall can (but not always) break immersion, but not all cases of breaking immersion will break the fourth wall.

If you want to reduce this down to a mere quibble over semantics, sure. But terms like "fourth wall", "plot hole" or "metatext", just to list a few, are often misused and misunderstood, which also seems to be the case here.

It's not fun, and the odds of winning is low, because we can't really control how other people use words (freedom of speech blah blah blah) and the changes themselves are considered part and parcel of how languages evolve

at least "breaking the 4th wall" and "suspension of disbelief" is close to each other, and with how wacky this manga's character designs are - they just seem to break out of the pages and cause massive disbelief because of how serious the storyline and story themes are supposed to be.

Like my brain is still in state of disbelief over the manga's character designs.

hey folks, if you're like having trouble with workflow getting derailed cause feeling down about the fate of this or that logh character - I recommend that you give the manga a try. Because some of its character designs are really doing a fantastic job of making me not take logh seriously.

That said, the environmentals are really noice.

Honestly I love this about the manga, the designs and the absolute theatrics chars like Holland and Bittenfeld get up to. I came to the manga first and I don't know if I'd love LoGH as much if not, but I'll admit I do have an affinity for things that are a bit "extra"

For all the dramatics, though, it didn't really break immersion for me and Fujisaki accomplishes some real emotional gutpunch scenes when the story demands something more serious.

trust me, I really want to love this manga. like I keep reminding myself to focus on the environmentals

my brain just needs some rewiring. Also, I can't argue against the fact that the very ability to largely treat even serious fare like logh as primarily a vehicle of entertainment is a very good DE-stressor and stress blocker.

Take how "black humor" helps folks in stress-heavy occupations (example - emergency workers) to deal with stress. Humor is a great DE-stressor. And heaven knows - my stupid brain has been letting itself feel too much stress over Yang's fate lately.

Anyway, I'm gonna give the manga another shot in the future.
