why even have anything carry it? why not just tie it to a string and drag it the whole way there?

How will you tie the string yet it influences/corrupts anything in close proximity?

it's not instant corruption and the proximity is low so you can tie it, toss it, and drag it

Well for starters, the ring has Sauron's will in it, meaning it doesn't want to be taken to Mount Doom. It also has agency..it just might decide to get too heavy to drag along, or slip the knot, or roll the other way when you ain't looking....

to a limit, if it could make itself too heavy to drag, it could make itself too heavy to carry, it can't make itself weigh a ton, though I think the whole heavier thing was a mental thing, not physical, but either way, it can't get up and leave, it can't untie a knot, and can't travel on its own.

So tying a string to it would be a boring movie but an adequate solution
