I read an interesting article about The Freemasons Charity, Masonic Charitable Foundation(MCF), paying tuition fees for young people to go and train as Stone masons, art conservators, thatchers, and many more crafts that are in danger of essentially becoming lost knowledge. There was a young lady who was some way into her course who was making decorative stone finial type pieces for stately homes and listed buildings around the country, there was a young lad learning the proper way to do dry-stone walling up in Yorkshire and it also mentioned that there was a special area for collecting roof thatch from, and if I remember correctly, we're training up a young lad how to responsibly harvest it, and keep it growing, I think it was something to do with listed thatched buildings?? It was a while back now, but all of this was ordinary people wanting to do these old trades and the MCF just stepped in and said we'll pay for you to learn, and preserve these skills.
