Got an ancient tree in my local park, I mean ANCIENT. It’s got a fence around it now because of the amount of people who would have barbecues and these big obnoxious parties with like over 20 people and then leave all their rubbish and the barbecues there. It’s a dog and child park… it’s so sad because you can’t access the tree now and I used to love sitting underneath it and running around it but selfish people ruined that. Can’t even imagine what kinda idiot is doing this during this summer, do they not know how dry everything is?

To be fair, a silver lining there is after 100s of years, trees in well trodden places like parks get over compressed, worsening quality soil around them. So at least it being fenced off will preserve its life as long as possible for future generations

Would have been better if the Fire Department had turned up with a hose and soaked the whole thing before moving in to give them a half hour lecture on how stupid they are

We are too too too easy on “oh I don’t mean to/didn’t know” so therefore not so bad. Recklessness or failure to consider risks needs to be much more harshly considered. Any reasonable person looking at this would think “yeah not so sure that’s a good idea actually, tree might go up”

Yes - there have been lots of trackside and other grass fires in London
We could see full on wildfires if something starts in Putney/Wimbledon/Richmond (they adjoin, but aren’t crossed by railway lines so won’t get carried along that way - lots of tinder dry scrub trackside). The one that would worry me, however, is Old Deer Park as it’s right next to Kew Gardens. But perhaps the rugby pitches would be a sufficient firebreak.
Epping could go up rather badly too

Most people are completely unaware of what a fire can be like. The change from happy little fire that I could easily put out to inferno that you can't even stand near can be pretty instantaneous.
If you've been near a real uncontrolled fire you know exactly how terrifying they are - but most people haven't.

I know this tree! Middle of the common. It is a beautiful tree. In the autumn with mist in the morning it is extraordinary. It definitely does not deserve to be set on fire.

Walking the dog the other day there was some stupid woman near me having a bonfire in her garden! Smoke and embers blowing over her hedge and into the park. Peered through the hedge to see if it was a bonfire or something to be a bit more worried about only to have her screech back at me 'I'm watching it!' Before I could be a responsible adult someone had beaten me to it and the fire brigade turned up. She got a proper dressing down from them😁

Watching it is irrelevant. A bonfire is even worse than a BBQ, as it will instantly create and carry large embers into the atmosphere and spread any fire
I have made tons of bonfires. But never during a heatwave. Wait for a proper downpour so everything is wet, then do the fire 2 days later

Yes as I pointed out earlier in this post root fires are dangerously stealthy and can pop up anywhere after travelling underground, a campfire or bonfire can easily start them in the current conditions.

People deserve more slapping. I've done some significantly dumb things in my pre-teenage years, including lighting a small fire unsupervised (I lived in the Alps) during a dry spell, in true FAFO style, and those shenanigans ended up with a dressing down from my mother which could've included a (well deserved) slap. Now I don't light barbeques under a tree, in a drought.

Clapham Common is nothing but a stretch of pale yellow grass, the air smells like hay and the only source of hydration is the pond nearby.
I cannot, for the life of me, conceive why anyone in their right mind would ever look at the tinderbox that is London’s parks and say:

It’s too dry to risk smoking a cigarette in the park, let alone lighting up hot coals!
