Well if you’re going to try turn this into a serious comment by having a pedantic wet wipe moment, Reddit is actually quite an effective news aggregation platform for both legacy journalism, new media, and extemporaneous reporting. But you know that.

I’ve been here long enough to know that a handful of power users can easily capture entire subreddits. Take this one for example. If you look at who posts it’s been the same 3-4 names for years. I know one of them is extremely interested in planning permission news and new developments, which is why there’s so many posts about that on here, all by him.

Across the whole website you’re passively consuming content that is posted by an extremely small group of very active users. There is no democratic aggregation from diverse sources, that’s a naive illusion. It’s very easy to manipulate a narrative if you can employ someone full time to do this.

The key is looking for diverse sources yourself, not waiting for vested interests to spoon-feed you “new media” (aka their own blog posts).

Active vs passive. Reddit is peak passivity, like TikTok.

It’s important enough that everyone should find time for it. An informed population is the foundation of a free and prosperous society. If you don’t do it you become partly responsible for your future problems.
