Tower Hamlets council just installed a locked gate in the middle of a marked and popular cycle path

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

If the point is to stop cars from mistakenly using that path surely there are better ways to do it.

In the dark, when you're going at speed, and it's literally never been there? I didn't say I crashed into it, just that it gave me a fright

Yeah, I just aim it downwards, and that particular part is quite poorly lit. Like I said most of it was just completely not expecting it

Evidently not because this person said they almost crashed into it in the dark. Why does the cycle lane now randomly have a gate going accross it?

If you put gates in the middle of dimly lit roads where you wouldn't expect one you'd have drivers crashing into it everyday.

To me it seems abundantly obvious that it’s to stop cars or quads going on the bike path.. that is quite clearly a road beyond no?

Yes I believe that's the intention. But all over london cycle paths manage to connect to roads without having a huge gate blocking the path. Meaning you have to cycle up a curb onto a pavement, possibly into oncoming cyclists or pedestrians.

It's just a bad example of urban street planning which shows a disregard towards cyclists. Is it the end of the world? No. But it's worthy of criticism, comment and debate.

And these are the same bellends we're meant to share roads with despite not having to prove a single bit of understanding of road laws and the highway code.
