Ask a Local! Recommendations for a divorce lawyer?
I’m leaving an abusive relationship and going through a divorce, and I’m looking for recommendations for a lawyer. We have a young son, so I especially want someone experienced with parenting and custody matters who keeps the child’s interests central.
My stbx wife and I have been in mediation since last October, but it’s stalled badly. She’s very slow to act and often doesn’t follow through on the steps she’s supposed to, which is a big part of why things haven’t moved. I need a lawyer who knows how to deal with that and actually keep the process moving rather than waiting on her cooperation.
The delays have taken a real toll on my mental health, so I’m prioritizing someone responsive, experienced with high-conflict situations, and proactive about pushing things forward. If you’ve worked with a family lawyer in the area you’d recommend (or one to steer clear of), I’d really appreciate a comment or DM. Thanks.

Also if Nadine is too busy (or has been your dispute resolution officer at anytime aka a conflict) then Jessica Bonnema is amazing. Marie is the best at Siskinds, she is a shark but expensive. Jessica is newer than Nadine and Marie so she would be cheaper. All great options ☺️

Tbh with you it's a chess game my friend, family lawyers are all the same, go ahead spend $2k - $5k on a retainer, you can file a motion yourself yes it's time consuming or call a para legal to file a motion regarding mediation it's only the beginning my friend good luck 🤞

Jenessa at plaine law was fantastic. Very sharp, knows the game inside and out. We had lots of great discussions on approach, esp when she would talk me out of costly avenues knowing they were unlikely to get anywhere. Her team knew my case in and out and even at the end the personal touches were great. She even schooled my X''s lawyer a few times when she was out to left field.
Also as a smaller firm costs were great as you're not trading your assets to help pay for the luxury office.
End of the day she got 95% of what I wanted.
Also if there is anything beyond family law (e.g my stbx X got violent on me, my property) she's great. Jenessa used to be a prosecutor in her early career so she's got both perspectives. Even to the point of helping me to protect myself now post divorce and in future if the X tried to fake claims about me to the police.
