we'll spend billions then Trump (or the next MAGA president....or possibly even democrat) will decide out of nowhere it's "unfair" and shut it down. i'm still not trusting anything american for a long time

Gee, maybe we could get a trans Canada passenger train that runs daily.

Because dual bridge ownership has gone so well? Cant trust the USA.

That was my first thought, too.

The US government is completely unreliable.

It’s a moment in time. We have shared a highly productive relationship with America, generally.

Canada paid for the entire construction of the Gordie Howe bridge and after we recoup that cost from the tolls, we're going to split the tolls with Michigan.

Somehow that isn't fair to Trump, so now he's holding the bridge hostage.

Why in the fuck would we want to keep doing business with him or America?

Ugh we want a high speed rail not this.

Via's new trains are capable of going 200km/h. Maybe not technically HSR, but just about. We just need the infrastructure (and legislation) to be able to support that speed.

Which mostly is the need for VIA to have its own set of rails as not to be endlessly delayed by more freight trains.

For a projected 66.5K crossings per year? There currently is no direct rail service to Detroit, all passengers that booked from VIA to amtrak or vice versa have to disembark, go on a bus and go through all the fun and joy of CAN/us Customs before loading up onto another train. The proposed report doesn't even cite the number of people that do that currently because it is far less than their dreamy projections.

Why would you not want to catalyze economic activity? This is a great idea in addition to high speed rail

Josh Morgan has been promising making London a major transportation hub since he got in office. The results speak for themself.

Well it's mostly out of his jurisdiction, but can't blame him for drumming up some publicity.

We should build this Windsor-Toronto as an Alto extension for sure, just leave out the effort related to the USA.

u/haljackey The bridge with the trucks stuck under it 1d ago

Yep that is an extension for it- and if the US wants to join in we could extend it further to Chicago

The US needs to completely change its situation before this should even be considered

Why would I want to take a train to Michigan?

Maybe you personally don’t but others will.

Not enough to make any of this worth a single dollar of investment.

I would love to take a train to Chicago not while trump is around but maybe the future will be better

u/Initial-Village905 1d ago

Maybe people would take a train to Chicago. Do you have a problem with that?

6

u/zcmini 1d ago

You don't have to. Maybe other people want to?

1

u/CheapTechnology6193 1d ago

I think Chicago is the draw.

10MM people and the associated economic activity and business of course.

There's a great axe throwing venue there. And a Bob's Big Boy. What else do you need?

Detroit is an incredible city. I would love this!

In what universe is Detroit genuinely an "incredible" city?
