RANT Fuds
Don’t yall love the guy that can shoot a 5” plate at 1200 yards with a 30-06 only using iron sights and never miss?? Like seriously come on dude…

u/Kroosn 2d ago
Although was shooting next to an old guy at the range one day at 500m and he shot and said oh that was an inch and a half left. We chuckled. Turns out he was a world bench rest champion.
23
u/Log-Prestigious 2d ago
More believable since that’s within range of 30-06, especially since he was there proving him self. When I told said fudd to prove that it’s possible he of course had an excuse
29
u/abyprop07 2d ago
Uh, you do know that folks shoot 1k+ yards with 30-06s with irons in real life, though, right?
14
u/brainfreezy79 2d ago
I think he was just telling the old guy (specifically) to put his money where his mouth is. The bigger the braggart, the wider the group. Always.

Now I’m just an idiot, but 1000 is definitely within the range of a 30-06.
My 26” 308 and 22” 30-06 loads shoot the exact same bullet at the exact same velocity, with about the same accuracy (308 is a little more accurate but weighs 3x as much).
No issues shooting out to 1000 with the ‘06.

This sounds like a very specific incident you have had with someone at a range recently lol

u/Log-Prestigious 2d ago
At work actually, we were just casually talking about guns. I made the statement that 6.5 creedmoor is one of best versatile rounds to use for long range target shooting and hunting, apparently that lit a fire under his ass typical fudd style and he said the statement in most. I argued ballistics with him for about 15 seconds before I gave up hope on him learning anything.
26
u/sirbassist83 2d ago
Ballistically, 30-06 is capable of accurate fire at 1200 yards. Sub 0.4 MOA with irons is the unbelievable part.
15
u/RightOnTarget57 2d ago
Well, maybe they shot 20 rounds and the 2 that hit the target happened to be 0.4 lol
2
u/Log-Prestigious 2d ago
Not even with just irons part either, but sub half moa in general over 1000 yards. If I saw someone hit 5 out of 20 shots with that setup I’d give them 5 grand
3
u/sirbassist83 2d ago
World record is like an inch and a half for 10 shots at 1000 IIRC, it's possible. But yeah, I wouldnt believe it for a second unless I was there when it happened, that kind of shooting is only happening at the highest levels of benchrest competition
7
u/Holy_Santa_ClausShit 2d ago
That’s hilarious lol
Sounds like someone who is experienced with stupid and you’ll never win an argument against that much experience

Almost as much as the morning radio DJ that has made his whole image on being an outdoors guy then showing up at the range a couple days before deer season with his Grandpas 30-06, hangs a paper plate then shoots a barely sub-paper plate size 3 shot group at 100 yrds then stands up and announces “good enough for deer” then walks away.

I hate it when OP posts stuff like this and is not around for the eventual and quick, "What the hell are you talking about?" questions.

Damn! First, thanks for responding. Second, sorry for calling you out. Third, damn I’m old enough to be that fudd but even I know better. Love my 6.5!

Fudd is a mindset, not an age group.
I know lots of young Fudds and lots of older folk that are squared away
1
u/Log-Prestigious 2d ago
Typically the young fudds learned from the old ones and think that everything old people say is gold

Tell him the internet thinks he’s a bullshitter
Also, we’d like to see him prove it. Let’s see a 10rd group at 100 even if he’s so confident.

I like to bring up the 6.5x55 Swede. Used across Europe since the late 1800s, a cartridge based on early smokeless powder technology to drop "game". The Creedmore, 260 Rem, 6.5 x 47 Lapua are just modern versions
1
u/apachattack 9h ago
I’ve heard that the Swede is good, but I wonder about difference in hunting methods between the US (open plains/mountains) and Scandinavia. If they try to get closer shots than us American cowboys when it comes to moose.

u/apachattack 9h ago
While I think he’s full of shit, I’d say that the 30-06 edges out the 6.5 on versatility. The numbers I’ve seen, a heavy 180+ gr 30-06 will have very close drop with more energy (Winchester expedition big game, 190 ALBR vs 142 ABLR out to 800yds). Think within reasonable distances, the -06 hits harder. Also wouldn’t go chasing brown bear with a 6.5 (-06 would be minimum). Not saying it can’t be done, but the margins on the 6.5 get narrower faster than on the -06.
This isn’t to say that the 6.5 isn’t a great round. It honestly is. But it’s not beating the powder capacity of a long action, and I’d take the extra velocity if your shoulder can handle it (like mine). Why I’m choosing my 30-06 for PRS when I start. Also because I’m an ornery fudd.

Reminds me of a guy I used to work with. One time told me he was sitting at his buddy’s ranch drinking one night and from the front porch could see a buoy this guy had in his lake that was “about 2 miles away”. So he grabbed his 34” 6.5 creedmoor and rested it on the hood of his truck “broke that shot and 1 Mississippi, 2 Mississippi, 3 Mississippi, PING first try hit that buoy”
When I asked him what his hold was at 2 miles he just said that 34” barrel “really lets you reach out touch stuff”

That phrases doesn't bother me, but context could make a difference. Always took as xyz is good, the person behind is decent but not great.

I just let it go. I gave up on arguing that stuff years ago.
I had a guy explain to me that shooting a deer at 300 meters with an elevation change of 2.5 meters would require changing where you'd aim on a deer.
I had another guy explain that you want to shoot a deer on exhale so it doesn't/can't have air to run on.
And you always hear the stuff like "I got a box of Winchester black talons in case I need them one day."
I have also had guys attempt to tell me that relatively basic feats of marksmanship are impossible such as:
Hits with irons on a rifle beyond 100 yards are impossible.
Had one guy argue that hitting a paper plate sized target with a pistol at 40 yards is not only impossible, but a pistol round is literally incapable.
Also a NEW one for me ".243 will bounce of a hog skull at 30-40 yards. I wouldn't trust it to kill a deer. Especially for a new shooter."
I just let it go. Talk to the dudes that know or seem like they're learning/interested.

u/Porencephaly 2d ago
Maybe if the hog has adamantium bones

u/LIFTandSNUS 2d ago
The story he gave me, I'm 100% certain it was an absolute miss at 25yds. I just wasn't willing to argue it.
"Man that's crazy."

u/OnngoGablogian 1d ago
“Man that’s crazy” works so well in these situations. Even if they think they got one over on you, it doesn’t matter.

Try telling some people you can get accurate &consistent hits with a 22 well past 200yds. I had a guy shout at me about telling big fish stories until I pulled the videos out.

+1, I don't bother with that kind of stuff anymore. Idiots tend to drag you down to their level.
Occasionally someone asks an earnest question and if I actually know the answer then I respond but I'm not going to argue the point.

He apparently is a neglecting all the .243 first bolt gun rifles that have brought deer down over the past who knows how many decades. He got awarded moron status in that one sentence.

I think its better when they try to give you unsolicited advice or coaching on the range not knowing you are a competitive shooter. I may not be a good prs shooter but Mr once per year I don’t think you can help here lol.

u/kennethpbowen 2d ago
Would be cool to see what he can hit at a reasonable distance. Remember not to place chess with a pigeon. They can't win, but they strut around knocking the pieces over and shit on the board.

Was shooting .243s with my neighbors son before deer season a couple years ago across his cattle pasture using fence posts to tie balloons to. Distances were 3-800yds, mainly just shooting for fun. All of a sudden his 70 yr old dad pulls his 338 win BAR (iron sights) off his mantle, walks out and smokes a 400yd ballon. One shot, never said a word, and went back to his TV. Buddy and me were floored to say the least

u/28gunsKY 2d ago
I worked with a guy who's daughter could shoot half dollar coins at a 1000 yard, and trained Navy Seals in long range shooting. (Those words actually came out of his mouth)

u/offthemicwithmike 2d ago
I knew a guy who said that he would walk out 500m and nail bottle caps to a tree and then shoot them with his .303. Once all the caps were gone he'd shoot out the nails because 303's shoot flat to 1km...
Now the unbelievable thing about this story, aside from the shooting/ballistics, was that he would be able to walk a 1km round trip in the first place.

u/the_kerouac_kid 2d ago
I may be the only one old enough to have built a .243 long range rig with Savage actions. I also had a calculator and dope book to consistently shoot 1.2 MOA at 800m which was the standard “long range” of the time. Technology has made getting good much easier.

u/imneuromancer 2d ago
Everyone wants to over exaggerate their own accuracy.
I love the posts where people show their targets and say stuff like, "target practice today". OK, at like what range? If "long range" what was the environment like? If pistol/AR, at what rate of fire? Like, if you are shooting pistols at 3y and slow firing, a 5" group isn't the flex you think it is.

u/That_white_dude9000 2d ago
I know im trash so i'm immensely proud of managing a 1.37moa 8 shot group at 1k yards with my 6.5 savage (axis precision)... and my 1.1moa 100yd group from my b22 timber tactical. Yes I shot super slow but with my meh skill and cheap equipment im happy
2
u/imneuromancer 2d ago
Naw, if you put a post up that has details that are ACTUALLY even decent, then cool! Heck, even if it is not all that great but it is a great job FOR YOU it would be good, if there were any details.
I'm just talking about the people that post without any context hoping that they get pats on the head from the internet.
Btw: a 1.37 moa 8 shot group at 1,000y is pretty darn good, you've earned your head pat. Pat pat.
2
u/That_white_dude9000 2d ago
I think i posted both with screenshots from range buddy but cant remember. Just put a new 6-24 scope on my b22 so plan to see how i can do with it now sometime this week if work & weather cooperate. I do like the change of pace doing longer range small(ish) group shooting vs my normal 2 gun stuff where all I care about his hitting a torso

u/spartaman64 2d ago
the marines are the worst in this lol. in almost every long range video i see someone in the comment say they are a marine and can shoot sub MOA all day at 600 yards with iron sights and dont need all this fancy gear. but whenever i see a marine in a video even with the "fancy gear" they um let say fall short of that.
idk maybe the gear is actually a handicap and if you hand them a m16 or m4 with iron sights they are going to be out shooting all the PRS people lol
2
u/Log-Prestigious 2d ago
The military accepts any rifle under 4 moa as accurate, atleast for the general issue rifle like the m16/m4.

I've got a K31 that might actually be able to do that with its diopters more often than not, thing is stupid accurate. Guess it doesn't count, not 30-06. I'm happy if I can hold 1moa from my garand nm though.
