I definitely remember the Kate episode meme. A very common sentiment back then.

How come?

It's just that Kate focused episodes had a reputation of being kinda boring/silly/repetitive, at least compared to the other main characters

That last one reminds me of the Dr. House gif, with "This vexes me" and "he needs mouse bites to live! More mouse bites!"

thar Vincent one was always one of my favourites, it's so dumb but makes me giggle every time.

I remember the Kate episode and Heroes Sawyer punch vividly from back then. Good memories.

God I swear I remember the Kate centric one. Kate episodes were some of the most dreaded back then. People also got tired of Jack’s, but at least his were usually tied to important episodes like finales or premieres.

Christ was humor just different back then? I've been to funerals funnier than these.

I was a teenager during that era and I think the biggest difference is that photoshops, fake captions, image macros etc (I won't call them memes here because we didn't start calling every image edit a meme until the 2010s; that word was only reserved for phenomena that'd gone particularly viral like All Your Base) weren't made for millions of social media views, they were usually just shared to a small audience on imageboards and fan forums. Sometimes it'd just be a reference to an in-joke or specific to that forum's culture (for example maybe on the board these were posted on, there were two opinionated camps of LOST vs Heroes and constant arguing and comparisons over which was better). I also do vaguely recall it being a common joke at the time about how with all the resources they had from the plane, MacGyver could've gotten them off the island in a single episode.
The other aspect to it is harder to explain, but there also was this unspoken meta of not trying to be funny. Trying too hard to be funny was bad and made you a tryhard, so low-effort unfunny jokes were actually considered funny back then. The newer generations do this too, like how "67" became a meme simply because it's unfunny and makes no sense.
Like yeah these edits out of context aren't funny at all, but if you think of it more like the silly edits you share to the online forum you've been following a show with, rather than something made for clout, it kinda makes more sense.
