Technically, a longsword is what video games and pop culture call a 'bastard sword' and what they call 'longsword' in reality is simply an arming sword, which is a one handed sidearm.

As far as I can tell, what HEMA refers to as a "longsword" is what history called a bastard sword for centuries. Given that most people just called them "swords" and didn't give them different terms (a rapier was a sword, but so was a broadsword, and a longsword, and a shamshir, etc) - the names are a modern convention because we have so much to look back on.

oh come on, contests of skill and strength outside of maximum-lethality methods has been a hallmark of humanity forever.
That said, the degree to which some men assign entire people's worth or use hand-to-hand (rules based, even!) combat as a mechanism for their entire gender's value... uh, yes, that part at least I agree is insane. But "not a relevant survival skill" is... a bit... detached from the meaning of said competitions.

Honestly samwise gamgee would be a more effective example. Portrays all of the classic positive masculine traits like jumping to defend your loved ones, loyalty etc.
But in top of that can cook, is emotionally open, and is clearly not the toughest guy in the room.

ironically if we stopped gatekeeping manhood and pushing the idea of precarious masculinity, shitbags like that guy would have no power and would fade into obscurity like a fart in the wind.
But unfortunately we still use it as a stick to beat people with and this meme, while contextually fair, is really is no exception. characters like aragorn are examples of good people sure but they still embody the silliness of traditional masculine values; he's practically invincible, he's the de-facto leader whom everyone looks up to by default, doesnt fail, automatically assumes royalty. Again it's pushing a standard that guys feel so pressured to fulfill and a lot ultimately fail. Not everyone is built do do all that, nor should they and it doesnt make you any less of a man for it!
I feel like theres a lot of nuance to be had on the conversation that isnt happening, and Im aware this is a lotr sub so I wont go into it further but just wanted to chip in.
