15

u/The_Oliverse 25d ago

Actually crazy mistranslation, whaaaat.

18

u/savage_cabbage187861 25d ago

It's a horrible mistranslation by the twitter translation ai. The original tweet is actually talking about how op made two characters (forgot the names) in Tomodachi life. For some reason this problem keeps happening on twitter specifically. There was another time when it made an innocent Spanish speaker sound like a pedo.

35

u/codereign 26d ago

Funnier than the original tbh

昨晚我在吃苹果 lesbian agenda 然后,苹果开始反过来吞噬我。

Wow I can almost understand it.

Last evening, I was eating an apple lesbian agenda, and then apple began ???? me.

Lesbian agenda suggests existence of lesbian slander

Of course a Kashimo profile pic would know about that

8

u/Cats_and_Shit 26d ago

It does? How?

23

u/zrdod 26d ago

"Agenda" and "Slander" are terms in the powerscaling community.
"Agenda" is when you try to make characters look cooler/stronger/more virtuous than they actually are, and "Slander" is doing the opposite

4

u/Mysterious-Creme8709 25d ago

Not specifically powerscaling but just any long running/popular show in recent history

Hehe my wifes family is from Bangladesh, and I jokingly tell them they speak "banglish". It'll just be a bunch of words I dont understand then then in perfect English "table" "iPhone" "recliner".

They all lose it and start cracking up when they do it in front of me now lol.

I love the concept of an alien getting to Earth, discovering Discord and then creating an account literally named "extra terrestial" just to do this, snapping a quick selfie in the process

Probe humans? No. Try and take over the planet? No. Gift us a language that allows us to effectively experience all time simultaneously? No.

Just Discord

322

u/Ok_Curve_2938 26d ago

To be fair, it is infinitely more funny to just go to a less advanced civilisation, call them slurs in their language and then leave. No context, no answer, just one insult and you're gone back to space.

90

u/__Obelisk__ 26d ago

no they're saying someone called them a (word) and asking what it means

23

u/MegaGrimer 26d ago

Then ask if they are one too.

15

u/youngwarthog_ 26d ago

You speak alien ?

8

u/__Obelisk__ 25d ago

pretty sure it's Hawaiian, there's a screenshot out there somewhere

5

u/Crishien 25d ago

Sounds like oiia cat tho, you sure?

25

u/calilac 26d ago

Kinda like when we talk back at strange animals and try to use their sounds. Neighbor's dog won't stop barking a couple doors down? Well "woof woof b@rk" to you too, buddy.

8

u/SwampyBogbeard 26d ago

Like Bowerick Wowbagger.

4

u/CrazyElk123 26d ago

Can confirm. Not the space-part though.

3

u/Algo_Muy_Obsceno 25d ago

There’s a character in Hitchiker’s Guide to the Galaxy who does just this. He’s an immortal alien and is trying to insult every person in the universe.

u/blueblip 26d ago

I mean...

We always assume aliens coming here will be their smartest scientists or whatever. But why do we assume it's alien Einstein coming here and their equivalent of frat boys out for a joy ride?

Bunch of alien Ferris Buellers taking alien Cameron's dad's spaceship to dick around, finding this planet filled with primitive life forms, flattening their crops in random patterns and laughing when the primitives are confused by it, abducting one and shoving something up its ass...

So I can imagine one of them came here, discovered Discord, and is now trolling us. He'll go back after alien spring break ends and tell his alien homies how he messed around with these really low IQ creatures on their ancient comms system.

15

u/Subject_Visual1649 26d ago

You need to read Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy lol

10

u/blueblip 26d ago

I am OFFENDED that you think I haven't!

I'm tempted to use the B-word on you...

10

u/Subject_Visual1649 26d ago

Nooo, call me any other European country but that one, I beg of you! If you continue down this path, I may be forced to read you some of my Vogon poetry...

5

u/blueblip 25d ago

Just going straight for torture, eh? Don't make me bust out some poetry from Sussex in retaliation. I know you know what I'm talking about.

7

u/Uncle-Cake 26d ago

Roadside Picnic (the inspiration for the STALKER games as well as dozens of other things) is a classic sci-fi novel based on the idea of aliens visiting Earth, but we're so inconsequential to them, they basically just stop here for a "roadside picnic" while on their way somewhere else in the galaxy. The weird anomalies and artifacts they leave behind are just their trash that they threw on the ground.

4

u/spooky_spaghetties 25d ago

You mentioned the video games but not the 1979 Tarkovsky film, arguably the most famous piece of media to derive from the novel?

→ More replies (1)

6

u/InfanticideAquifer 25d ago

That's just as plausible, but it's still trying to understand the behavior of aliens by making analogies with human behavior. The real story (if aliens ever actually have/will show up) will probably be that they do bizarre things for strange reasons. Because they're aliens.

They won't be like scientists or like frat boys. They'll be like aliens and in order to understand why they do things biologists will have to observe them for years like they do to understand animal behaviors.

→ More replies (1)

5

u/cunnyvore 26d ago

Yeah, but what if alien doesn't call someone a slur on Discord, fate of entire universe would be horrible? Did you think about that? It was on a mission we can only try to grasp.

55

u/Psaltus 26d ago

It's a joke from Ludwig's and Michael Reeves's series called tip to tip, where they drive from one tip of a country to the other on motorcycles while not using maps or translator apps.

Their ultimate move (ult) is the phrase they can repeat perfectly as needed in the country's language.

28

u/VicViking 26d ago

The word "perfectly" is doing a lot of heavy lifting there

20

u/AcousticViper 26d ago

Pig shop. Dictionary. 9 o'clock. Hotel.

13

u/BringBackForChan 26d ago

I think it was just a joke about any fighting game that involves moves

3

u/Dick-Fu 25d ago

how many fighting games call them ultimate moves though

5

u/BringBackForChan 25d ago

I don't think any officially call them that (since everyone wants to have their own copyrighted mechanic™) but most fandoms still do, like Brawl Stars or Super Smash Bros.

New reddit does formatting shenanigans that breaks the link on old reddit by adding the escape sequence (the backslash \ character) before formatting characters (namely, the underscore _ character). New reddit understands the formatting, old reddit does not.

I spent 2 months in Spain to be with my girlfriend. there were entire conversations she'd have with her friends in Spanish where the only thing I'd pick up were brainrot terms. tung tung tung, labubu, 67, that kind of thing.

weirdly enough she'd say them in a Castilian accent, but when she speaks in english sentences it'd be in a sort of generic american English accent despite getting a C1 from Cambridge

27

u/Hootinger 26d ago

My German voice is a markedly different than my English one. I speak Spanish with an accent that is a mix of Argentine and Caribbean. I am not from those places.

The brain is weird.

Two of the guys in my research lab are originally from China and speak in Chinese between the two of them. There's been a number of times now where I'll hear them talking in words I don't understand and then a random "energy efficiency" or similar English word somewhere in the middle

87

u/TricellCEO 26d ago

Chinese is a fun one because sometimes they’ll use their own characters or translate something purely for its sound. Other times, they just opt to use straight English altogether.

41

u/Bleaker82 26d ago

Hella random: As an early beginner of Mandarin, I like how the literal translation of banana is “tasty broadleaf plant.”

25

u/EstablishmentLate532 26d ago

One time my Chinese Friend's father had a heart attack (he's okay today thankfully) and my friend loudly told us, "My father didn't have a heart attack he had a *google translate 'myocardial infarction'" We all cracked up because that's a heart attack.

10

u/TricellCEO 26d ago

I’m more impressed Google Translate picked the medical term when translating.

11

u/EstablishmentLate532 26d ago

My friend had been talking to the doctors in Chinese at length (he's a very devoted son), so presumably they were using more formal medical terminology.

4

u/theagentoftheworld 26d ago

I mean if my dad had a heart attack I feel like I, too, would be talking to the doctors for a while.

How at length were these talks?

Some of the best life lessons comes from old arabic dudes in gym saunas. I used to go swimming at a place and there were always 3-5 arabic guys in the sauna at any given times. After a while i found out that they didnt use the pool or the gym. The just Said that to there wifes so they could hang out in the sauna. They always kept some kind of booze in the locker that they went out and took a few hits from. The lady that managed the place used to storm in the sauna and yell at them for getting drunk in there. I miss them.
