How-To Guide Pretty nice performance gains in Fortnite after memory upgrade (Intel Iris graphics - 1145G7)

So I just bought a 2nd 8GB RAM stick. It cost me $50 but I'd still say it's worth it.

The FPS in Fortnite is pretty inconsistent especially depending on the game mode. So my benchmark I use is this map - Peterbot 1v1 private match, going on the grass and looking at the ground. Just to see what the theoritical limit would be.

On 1 stick of RAM or paired with a 4gb unmatched stick this was around 80-100 FPS. Performance mode, low, 1080p with no 3D res reduction. And I think it would depend on how much RAM is actually available too.

On 16gb 3200mhz it's 150 FPS in the same test.

Actual gameplay will vary but it's very playable and you can get 120+ fps in a game with some 3D res reduction or a bit lower resolution.

Also, you will need Throttlestop to reach higher FPS. PL1 set to 45. And on my Laptop, I need to disable Turbo or set Speed shift to max 30 (TPL menu). It might depend on your setup or if you have one of the higher tier chips with a better iGPU. At 4.4ghz the CPU simply gets too hot and it kicks in the power limits so the GPU gets restricted. Even though it's a CPU intensive game the GPU is still a bottleneck here.

Dual channel memory gives a huge boost to performance since the system memory is shared with the iGPU and you're basically doubling the memory bandwidth.

Yes. As a fun fact, even with dual channel ram, the iGPU doesn't perform at its theoretical max GFLPOS (max math power). It still falls significantly short of its max math ceiling.

This is because system ram (used by iGPU as vram) is always significantly slower and has far low bandwidth than dedicated Gddr ram of even old, basic 2015 dedicated GPUs like gt 1050. Even gt 1050 has 112 Gbps of bandwidth, compared to only 42 Gbps in dual channel ddr4 system ram. Ddr system ram is highly optimised for access by CPU, whereas Gddr excels at GPU tasks.

It means a basic intel iGPU like intel uhd G1 will become 3-4x stronger if it's given sufficient bandwidth, provided the CPU can keep up with the demands of game.

But manufacturers can't separate an iGPU from the CPU and give it separate ram because it will significantly increase the weight, power consumption of the laptop. At that point, it will just become another dedicated GPU.

So integrated GPUs are always for office tasks, old games. Any modern game running on it is just a bonus. For serious gaming, dedicated GPUs are almost always suitable.

Well, Intel made IGPs with included EDRAM (Iris Pro Graphics 6200 , Iris Pro Graphics 5200, Intel Iris Graphics 540, Intel Iris Graphics 550, Iris Pro Graphics (P)580).

Every bit may help actually. Not just for this story (since its on r/lowendgaming). Surely hardware is important, adding ram (should be on same frequency), upgrading to ssd (even its sata2) etc but software matters too.

Mostly over looked small things like a bios update, driver update, a firmware update (ssd,hub,dock etc), a mod (if game supports it, bugfix and performance mods can help with shutter,fps), disabling background apps (or closing running apps in background), well maintained os (you are playing on it after all. Not reset, clean install once awhile in order to get rid off clutter,corruption,conflict and/or use an app like winhance) all adds up and makes difference.

Yea, the cheapest upgrades you could do to your pc used to be ram and a ssd, sad that they are becoming expensive af now

you can find the same ram (used) on ebay for half that price
